Slovakian students' knowledge of and attitudes toward biotechnology

This study examined university students' knowledge of and attitudes (N = 378) toward biotechnology in Slovakia, a conservative country where the distribution of genetically engineered products are banned by law. We found a significant positive correlation between attitudes and the level of knowledge; however, although students enrolled in biology courses have better knowledge of biotechnology, their attitudes toward genetic engineering were similar than those of students who do not study biology. Females showed poorer knowledge and lower acceptance of genetically engineered products than did males. Overall, Slovakian students have poor knowledge and numerous misunderstandings about what genetic engineering means, which suggests that science curriculum with respect to this topic should be greatly re-evaluated and teaching strategies should be improved accordingly

The articles concentrate on the vision of the networked vehicle and the impact of connected cars on the automotive business. The interpretation of subject of this article is based on the combined data set of many published reports and analytical studies. Car will become an active, mobile node in the Internet. This contribution illustrates effects of Internet networking in automobiles, connected to external interfaces, and customer acceptance of these systems which are suitable for multiple application domains – external connectivity, security, telematics, diagnosis, integrated safety management etc. Bringing services and applications from the consumer space into the car is an intensive challenge for automakers. Creating a networking between the car in traffic, its own original data, and its surrounding infrastructure via the Internet will give rise to new applications and business models in automotive. The impulses that can support the development and implementation of standardized services for car connectivity are resulting from information technologies and globalization trends, assuming that the close collaboration of OEMs, Tier-x suppliers, Government bodies and consumers is realised and synergy effect is reached

The problem of municipalities under 200 inhabitants is discussed. There are 1,500 such municipalities (24%) in the Czech Republic. Many of them came to existence after 1989 when the independence of communes was considered part of the democratisation process regardless of the population number. This paper aims at a statistical evaluation of municipalities with fewer than 200 inhabitants and presents their geographical distribution, demographic development and analysis of their aging. In general, 70% of these very small municipalities have been growing since 2001. The smallest of them have the highest percentage of the population decline and are the most endangered by aging. Very small municipalities with the highest population growth are situated mainly in the vicinity of larger towns, the ones with the highest population decline are located mainly in peripheral areas at the border of regions
