    This project aims to address the growing need for a coordinated approach to research into the biological control of Australian eucalypt insect pests by scoping the formation of a Centre in Australia which would (a) coordinate the evaluation and provision of biological control agents (initially to South Africa and Brazil, but in future years more widely), (b) research the role natural enemies play in pest population regulation in Australian eucalypt plantations and how this may be enhanced as a management tool, and (c) form a network focussed on forest biosecurity with an emphasis on eucalypt pests and pathogens

    Minimal immersions of closed surfaces in hyperbolic three-manifolds

    We study minimal immersions of closed surfaces (of genus g≥2g \ge 2) in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, with prescribed data (σ,tα)(\sigma, t\alpha), where σ\sigma is a conformal structure on a topological surface SS, and αdz2\alpha dz^2 is a holomorphic quadratic differential on the surface (S,σ)(S,\sigma). We show that, for each t∈(0,τ0)t \in (0,\tau_0) for some τ0>0\tau_0 > 0, depending only on (σ,α)(\sigma, \alpha), there are at least two minimal immersions of closed surface of prescribed second fundamental form Re(tα)Re(t\alpha) in the conformal structure σ\sigma. Moreover, for tt sufficiently large, there exists no such minimal immersion. Asymptotically, as t→0t \to 0, the principal curvatures of one minimal immersion tend to zero, while the intrinsic curvatures of the other blow up in magnitude.Comment: 16 page

    Healthy hardwoods: A field guide to pests, diseases and nutritional disorders in subtropical hardwoods can be used to help identify the common damaging insects, fungi and nutritional disorders in young eucalypt (Eucalyptus and Corymbia species) plantations in subtropical eastern Australia. This guide includes photographs of each insect, fungus and nutritional disorder and the damage they cause, along with a brief description to aid identification. A brief host list for insects and fungi, including susceptibility and occurrence, is provided as a guide only. A hand lens will be useful, especially to identify fungi. Although it is possible to identify insects and fungi from these photographs, laboratory examination will sometimes be necessary. For example, microscopes and culturing media might be used to identify fungi. Information about four exotic pests and diseases has also been included in the Biosecurity threats chapter. Potentially, these would have a severe impact on plantation and natural forests if introduced into Australia. To prevent establishment of these pests, early detection and identification is crucial. If an exotic insect or disease is suspected, then an immediate response is required. Usually, the first response will be to contact the nearest Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service office or forestry agency to seek advice

    Let G be a compact Lie-group, X a compact G-CW-complex. We define equivariant geometric K-homology groups K^G_*(X), using an obvious equivariant version of the (M,E,f)-picture of Baum-Douglas for K-homology.     Rigid upper bounds for the angular momentum and centre of mass of non-singular asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times

    We prove upper bounds on angular momentum and centre of mass in terms of the Hamiltonian mass and cosmological constant for non-singular asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets satisfying the dominant energy condition. We work in all space-dimensions larger than or equal to three, and allow a large class of asymptotic backgrounds, with spherical and non-spherical conformal infinities; in the latter case, a spin-structure compatibility condition is imposed. We give a large class of non-trivial examples saturating the inequality. We analyse exhaustively the borderline case in space-time dimension four: for spherical cross-sections of Scri, equality together with completeness occurs only in anti-de Sitter space-time. On the other hand, in the toroidal case, regular non-trivial initial data sets saturating the bound exist.Comment: improvements in the presentation; some statements correcte

    Characterization of and structural insight into struvite-K, MgKPO4·6H2O, an analogue of struvite

    Struvite-K (MgKPO4·6H2O) is a magnesium potassium phosphate mineral with naturally cementitious properties, which is finding increasing usage as an inorganic cement for niche applications including nuclear waste management and rapid road repair. Struvite-K is also of interest in sustainable phosphate recovery from wastewater and, as such, a detailed knowledge of the crystal chemistry and high-temperature behavior is required to support further laboratory investigations and industrial applications. In this study, the local chemical environments of synthetic struvite-K were investigated using high-field solid-state 25Mg and 39K MAS NMR techniques, alongside 31P MAS NMR and thermal analysis. A single resonance was present in each of the 25Mg and 39K MAS NMR spectra, reported here for the first time alongside the experimental and calculated isotropic chemical shifts, which were comparable to the available data for isostructural struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O). An in situ high-temperature XRD analysis of struvite-K revealed the presence of a crystalline–amorphous–crystalline transition that occurred between 30 and 350 °C, following the single dehydration step of struvite-K. Between 50 and 300 °C, struvite-K dehydration yielded a transient disordered (amorphous) phase identified here for the first time, denoted δ-MgKPO4. At 350 °C, recrystallization was observed, yielding β-MgKPO4, commensurate with an endothermic DTA event. A subsequent phase transition to γ-MgKPO4 was observed on further heating, which reversed on cooling, resulting in the α-MgKPO4 structure stabilized at room temperature. This behavior was dissimilar from that of struvite exposed to high temperature, where NH4 liberation occurs at temperatures >50 °C, indicating that struvite-K could potentially withstand high temperatures via a transition to MgKPO4

    A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons

    We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.

    First Measurement of Z/gamma* Production in Compton Scattering of Quasi-real Photons

    We report the first observation of Z/gamma* production in Compton scattering of quasi-real photons. This is a subprocess of the reaction e+e- to e+e-Z/gamma*, where one of the final state electrons is undetected. Approximately 55 pb-1 of data collected in the year 1997 at an e+e- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP have been analysed. The Z/gamma* from Compton scattering has been detected in the hadronic decay channel. Within well defined kinematic bounds, we measure the product of cross-section and Z/gamma* branching ratio to hadrons to be (0.9+-0.3+-0.1) pb for events with a hadronic mass larger than 60 GeV, dominated by (e)eZ production. In the hadronic mass region between 5 GeV and 60 GeV, dominated by (e)egamma* production, this product is found to be (4.1+-1.6+-0.6) pb. Our results agree with the predictions of two Monte Carlo event generators, grc4f and PYTHIA.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters

    Search for Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at 183 GeV

    The data collected by the OPAL experiment at sqrts=183 GeV were used to search for Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Standard Model and various extensions, such as general models with two Higgs field doublets and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 54pb-1. None of the searches for neutral and charged Higgs bosons have revealed an excess of events beyond the expected background. This negative outcome, in combination with similar results from searches at lower energies, leads to new limits for the Higgs boson masses and other model parameters. In particular, the 95% confidence level lower limit for the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson is 88.3 GeV. Charged Higgs bosons can be excluded for masses up to 59.5 GeV. In the MSSM, mh > 70.5 GeV and mA > 72.0 GeV are obtained for tan{beta}>1, no and maximal scalar top mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV. The range 0.8 < tanb < 1.9 is excluded for minimal scalar top mixing and m{top} < 175 GeV. More general scans of the MSSM parameter space are also considered.Comment: 49 pages.     A Measurement of the Product Branching Ratio f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) in Z0 Decays

    The product branching ratio, f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X), where Lambda_b denotes any weakly-decaying b-baryon, has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. Lambda_b are selected by the presence of energetic Lambda particles in bottom events tagged by the presence of displaced secondary vertices. A fit to the momenta of the Lambda particles separates signal from B meson and fragmentation backgrounds. The measured product branching ratio is f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) = (2.67+-0.38(stat)+0.67-0.60(sys))% Combined with a previous OPAL measurement, one obtains f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) = (3.50+-0.32(stat)+-0.35(sys))%.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 3 eps figs included, submitted to the European Physical Journal
