Ways of seeing evaluation
Copyright @ 2011 Brunel UniversityThis report summarises the evaluation of Ways of Seeing, a community arts project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and hosted by the Lightbox, Woking, Surrey from 2008-11. The people involved have had remarkable experiences, choosing how to take part in each stage of preparations for a major public art exhibition. All those involved had disabilities, primarily arising from mental health issues but also including physical disabilities. The project was skilfully designed and led to enable them to make a significant contribution, enhancing their well-being and resulting in the Ways of Seeing exhibition which was widely appreciated. The Lightbox is an award-winning museum, housing a permanent local history exhibition as well as touring major art exhibitions. The Ingram Modern Art collection is on permanent loan, with regular exhibitions of work from the collection. Since the Lightbox opened in 2007, it has had a stated intention to promote local community involvement, successfully obtaining external funding to support this work. Ways of Seeing was the most ambitious project to date, aiming to exhibit selected work from the Ingram Collection alongside art created as part of the project by local disabled people. The emphasis on ways of seeing reflected an interest in their diverse perspectives, especially in relation to long term mental health problems. A steering group was set up, with members from local mental health initiatives and an evaluation team from Brunel University. The project started by orientating participants to how art is created and exhibited, with a series of visits and workshops on major art collections and artistsâ studios. This stage successfully attracted a range of people and was followed by taster workshops of different art techniques. Then participants examined every item in the Ingram Collection and agreed a selection to inspire their own artistic responses. All-day workshops were convened, covering the same techniques as before and giving everyone space and time to get started. Curation of the exhibition gathered pace as final selections were made from participantsâ art works and the Ingram Collection. The exhibition offered opportunities for everyone to have selections of their work exhibited to the public alongside the selected work from the Ingram Collection. A video artist captured the project in film and an MSc occupational therapy student from Brunel University undertook independent interviews of participants. It is clear that this multi-stage and carefully considered approach was highly successful in engaging people who are often excluded from arts events and venues. It was also successful in engaging the public in an innovative and thought-provoking exhibition, challenging assumptions about mental health and promoting the benefits of participation. The willingness of the Lightbox to host and support the project was essential. Based on tolerance, respect and a sympathetic curiosity, with clear and skilled leadership, the project enabled participants to make significant changes in their own lives.This study was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund
Radiotelemetry Of Heart Rates From Free-Ranging Gulls
A lightweight radiotelemetry system with a range of 80 km was used to monitor heart rate from free-ranging Herring Gulls on flights of up to 20 km. Heart rate varied from 130 beats/min in a resting bird to 625 beats/min for sustained flight. Soaring birds showed rates similar to those of birds sitting quietly on the ground. Simultaneous records of telemetered heart rate and intraspecific conflict on the nesting island revealed that cardiac acceleration preceded overt visual communication. Intensely aggressive behavior was accompanied by heart rates approaching those of sustained flight. Heart rate as a measure of metabolic cost indicates that the gull\u27s behavioral adaptations for long-distance flight, food location and intraspecific communication result in major energy savings
Transport in Molecular Junctions with Different Metallic Contacts
Ab initio calculations of phenyl dithiol connected to Au, Ag, Pd, and Pt
electrodes are performed using non-equilibrium Green's functions and density
functional theory. For each metal, the properties of the molecular junction are
considered both in equilibrium and under bias. In particular, we consider in
detail charge transfer, changes in the electrostatic potential, and their
subsequent effects on the IV curves through the junctions. Gold is typically
used in molecular junctions because it forms strong chemical bonds with sulfur.
We find however that Pt and Pd make better electrical contacts than Au. The
zero-bias conductance is found to be greatest for Pt, followed by Pd, Au, and
then Ag
One step multiderivative methods for first order ordinary differential equations
A family of one-step multiderivative methods based on Padé approximants to the exponential function is developed.
The methods are extrapolated and analysed for use in PECE mode.
Error constants and stability intervals are calculated and the combinations compared with well known linear multi-step combinations and combinations using high accuracy Newton-Cotes quadrature formulas as correctors.

The Ever Changing Circumstellar Nebula Around UW Centauri
We present new images of the reflection nebula surrounding the R Coronae
Borealis Star, UW Cen. This nebula, first detected in 1990, has changed its
appearance significantly. At the estimated distance of UW Cen, this nebula is
approximately 0.6 ly in radius so the nebula cannot have physically altered in
only 8 years. Instead, the morphology of the nebula appears to change as
different parts are illuminated by light from the central star modulated by
shifting thick dust clouds near its surface. These dust clouds form and
dissipate at irregular intervals causing the well-known declines in the R
Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. In this way, the central star acts like a
lighthouse shining through holes in the dust clouds and lighting up different
portions of the nebula. The existence of this nebula provides clues to the
evolutionary history of RCB stars possibly linking them to the Planetary
Nebulae and the final helium shell flash stars.Comment: To be published in ApJ Letters. 5 pages, 3 figures (2 in color
Einstein Manifolds As Yang-Mills Instantons
It is well-known that Einstein gravity can be formulated as a gauge theory of
Lorentz group where spin connections play a role of gauge fields and Riemann
curvature tensors correspond to their field strengths. One can then pose an
interesting question: What is the Einstein equations from the gauge theory
point of view? Or equivalently, what is the gauge theory object corresponding
to Einstein manifolds? We show that the Einstein equations in four dimensions
are precisely self-duality equations in Yang-Mills gauge theory and so Einstein
manifolds correspond to Yang-Mills instantons in SO(4) = SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R
gauge theory. Specifically, we prove that any Einstein manifold with or without
a cosmological constant always arises as the sum of SU(2)_L instantons and
SU(2)_R anti-instantons. This result explains why an Einstein manifold must be
stable because two kinds of instantons belong to different gauge groups,
instantons in SU(2)_L and anti-instantons in SU(2)_R, and so they cannot decay
into a vacuum. We further illuminate the stability of Einstein manifolds by

Issues Facing Design Professionals through the Lens of Two Rain-Induced Roof Collapses
The drainage of low-sloped roof systems involves multiple design professionals, and often each has a different opinion as to their design responsibility. Roofing issues have been identified as being a number one source of litigation, and rain-induced roof collapses continue to occur with alarming frequency. With the backdrop of several rain-induced roof collapses, this paper illustrates the complexity of assigning design responsibility for drainage systems; and investigates a variety of outcomes associated with the current building code provisions transporting rainwater from large low-sloped roof structures
High-power operation of a K-band second harmonic gyroklystron
Amplification studies of a two-cavity second-harmonic gyroklystron are reported. A magnetron injection gun produces a 440 kV, 200â245 A, 1 ÎŒs beam with an average perpendicular-to-parallel velocity ratio slightly less than 1. The TE011 input cavity is driven near 9.88 GHz and the TE021 output cavity resonates near 19.76 GHz. Peak powers exceeding 21 MW are achieved with an efficiency near 21% and a large signal gain above 25 dB. This performance represents the current state of the art for gyroklystrons in terms of the peak power normalized to the output wavelength squared
Young stars in Epsilon Cha and their disks: disk evolution in sparse associations
(abridge) The nearby young stellar association Epsilon Cha association has an
estimated age of 3-5 Myr, making it an ideal laboratory to study the disk
dissipation process and provide empirical constraints on the timescale of
planet formation. We combine the available literature data with our Spitzer IRS
spectroscopy and VLT/VISIR imaging data. The very low mass stars USNO-B120144.7
and 2MASS J12005517 show globally depleted spectral energy distributions
pointing at strong dust settling. 2MASS J12014343 may have a disk with a very
specific inclination where the central star is effectively screened by the cold
outer parts of a flared disk but the 10 micron radiation of the warm inner disk
can still reach us. We find the disks in sparse stellar associations are
dissipated more slowly than those in denser (cluster) environments. We detect
C_{2}H_{2} rovibrational band around 13.7 micron on the IRS spectrum of
USNO-B120144.7. We find strong signatures of grain growth and crystallization
in all Epsilon Cha members with 10 micron features detected in their IRS
spectra. We combine the dust properties derived in the Epsilon Cha sample with
those found using identical or similar methods in the MBM 12, Coronet cluster,
Eta Cha associations, and in the cores to disks (c2d) legacy program. We find
that disks around low-mass young stars show a negative radial gradient in the
mass-averaged grain size and mass fraction of crystalline silicates. A positive
correlation exists between the mass-averaged grain sizes of amorphous silicates
and the accretion rates if the latter is above ~10^{-9} Msun/yr, possibly
indicating that those disks are sufficiently turbulent to prevent grains of

Efficient operation of a high-power X-band gyroklystron
Experimental studies of amplification in a two-cavity X-band gyroklystron are reported. The system utilizes a thermionic magnetron injection gun at voltages up to 440 kV and currents up to 190 A in 1-ÎŒs pulses. Optimum performance is achieved by tapering the magnetic-field profile. Peak powers of 20 MW in the TE01 mode at 9.87 GHz are measured with calibrated crystals and with methanol calorimetry. Resultant efficiencies are in excess of 31% and large-signal gains surpass 26 dB. The experimental results are in good agreement with simulated results from a partially self-consistent, nonlinear, steady-state code
