The platinum nuclei: concealed configuration mixing and shape coexistence
The role of configuration mixing in the Pt region is investigated. For this
chain of isotopes, the nature of the ground state changes smoothly, being
spherical around mass and and deformed around the
mid-shell N=104 region. This has a dramatic effect on the systematics of the
energy spectra as compared to the systematics in the Pb and Hg nuclei.
Interacting Boson Model with configuration mixing calculations are presented
for gyromagnetic factors, -decay hindrance factors, and isotope shifts.
The necessity of incorporating intruder configurations to obtain an accurate
description of the latter properties becomes evident.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review
Solubility of Sulfur Dioxide in Sulfuric Acid
The solubility of sulfur dioxide in 50% (wt./wt.) sulfuric acid was evaluated by regular solution theory, and the results verified by experimental measurements in the temperature range of 25 C to 70 C at pressures of 60 to 200 PSIA. The percent (wt./wt.) of sulfur dioxide in 50% (wt./wt.) sulfuric acid is given by the equation %SO2 = 2.2350 + 0.0903P - 0.00026P 10 to the 2nd power with P in PSIA

Implications of State Policy Changes on Mental Health Service Models for Students with Disabilities
For over 25 years, students with disabilities in California received educationally related mental health services through interagency collaboration between school districts and county mental health agencies. After a major change in state policy that eliminated state-mandated interagency collaboration, school districts in California are now solely responsible for providing all mental health services entitled to students with disabilities. This collective case study included three school districts, and examined mental health service provision immediately following the elimination of legally mandated coordination with county mental health professionals. Interviews were conducted with three district representatives from each of three school districts in California. Participant responses indicated confusion regarding the change in statutory regulations and disagreement surrounding assessment procedures and service providers. Implications for school districts as part of a system of care framework are discussed
Long-term high fat feeding of rats results in increased numbers of circulating microvesicles with pro-inflammatory effects on endothelial cells
Obesity and type 2 diabetes lead to dramatically increased risks of atherosclerosis and CHD. Multiple mechanisms converge to promote atherosclerosis by increasing endothelial oxidative stress and up-regulating expression of pro-inflammatory molecules. Microvesicles (MV) are small ( < 1 μm) circulating particles that transport proteins and genetic material, through which they are able to mediate cell–cell communication and influence gene expression. Since MV are increased in plasma of obese, insulin-resistant and diabetic individuals, who often exhibit chronic vascular inflammation, and long-term feeding of a high-fat diet (HFD) to rats is a well-described model of obesity and insulin resistance, we hypothesised that this may be a useful model to study the impact of MV on endothelial inflammation. The number and cellular origin of MV from HFD-fed obese rats were characterised by flow cytometry. Total MV were significantly increased after feeding HFD compared to feeding chow (P< 0·001), with significantly elevated numbers of MV derived from leucocyte, endothelial and platelet compartments (P< 0·01 for each cell type). MV were isolated from plasma and their ability to induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 expression was measured in primary rat cardiac endothelial cells in vitro. MV from HFD-fed rats induced significant ROS (P< 0·001) and VCAM-1 expression (P= 0·0275), indicative of a pro-inflammatory MV phenotype in this model of obesity. These findings confirm that this is a useful model to further study the mechanisms by which diet can influence MV release and subsequent effects on cardio-metabolic health
The Ever Changing Circumstellar Nebula Around UW Centauri
We present new images of the reflection nebula surrounding the R Coronae
Borealis Star, UW Cen. This nebula, first detected in 1990, has changed its
appearance significantly. At the estimated distance of UW Cen, this nebula is
approximately 0.6 ly in radius so the nebula cannot have physically altered in
only 8 years. Instead, the morphology of the nebula appears to change as
different parts are illuminated by light from the central star modulated by
shifting thick dust clouds near its surface. These dust clouds form and
dissipate at irregular intervals causing the well-known declines in the R
Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. In this way, the central star acts like a
lighthouse shining through holes in the dust clouds and lighting up different
portions of the nebula. The existence of this nebula provides clues to the
evolutionary history of RCB stars possibly linking them to the Planetary

One step multiderivative methods for first order ordinary differential equations
A family of one-step multiderivative methods based on Padé approximants to the exponential function is developed.
The methods are extrapolated and analysed for use in PECE mode.
Error constants and stability intervals are calculated and the combinations compared with well known linear multi-step combinations and combinations using high accuracy Newton-Cotes quadrature formulas as correctors.

The Electrosphere of Macroscopic "Quark Nuclei": A Source for Diffuse MeV Emissions from Dark Matter
Using a Thomas-Fermi model, we calculate the structure of the electrosphere
of the quark antimatter nuggets postulated to comprise much of the dark matter.
This provides a single self-consistent density profile from ultrarelativistic
densities to the nonrelativistic Boltzmann regime that use to present
microscopically justified calculations of several properties of the nuggets,
including their net charge, and the ratio of MeV to 511 keV emissions from
electron annihilation. We find that the calculated parameters agree with
previous phenomenological estimates based on the observational supposition that
the nuggets are a source of several unexplained diffuse emissions from the
Galaxy. As no phenomenological parameters are required to describe these
observations, the calculation provides another nontrivial verification of the
dark-matter proposal. The structure of the electrosphere is quite general and
will also be valid at the surface of strange-quark stars, should they exist.Comment: 20 Pages, REVTeX4.
Chemical Properties of Soils and Streams in Natural and Disturbed Forest Ecosystems in the Ouachita Mountains
One year of pre-harvest and five years of post-harvest water chemistry data were collected and analyzed for N03-N, TKN, TP, OP, K and Ca on nine small watersheds in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas. Gross exports of all nutrients except TKN were significantly increased by cl earcutting followed by mechanical site preparation and broadcast burning of slash. Discharge-weighted nutrient concentrations were increased only for OP, K and Ca. The treatment effect was brief, lasting only one year. The first harvest of a selection system regime had no measurable effect on gross losses or concentrations of nutrients. Precipitation chemistry measurements from the region indicated that annual imports of all nutrients considered in this study generally exceed the gross losses measured. However, because of the possible threat to soil fertility by the leaching effects of acid deposition, foresters should be especially vigilant in their efforts to protect site productivity where soils are low in base cations
Two universal results for Wilson loops at strong coupling
We present results for Wilson loops in strongly coupled gauge theories. The
loops may be taken around an arbitrarily shaped contour and in any field theory
with a dual IIB geometry of the form M x S^5. No assumptions about
supersymmetry are made. The first result uses D5 branes to show how the loop in
any antisymmetric representation is computed in terms of the loop in the
fundamental representation. The second result uses D3 branes to observe that
each loop defines a rich sequence of operators associated with minimal surfaces
in S^5. The action of these configurations are all computable. Both results
