Resisting the inner plantation : decolonisation and the practice of education in the work of Eric Williams

The motif of the plantation is central to Caribbean scholarship. Its full explanatory power, however, is rarely found in contemporary understandings of education in the region, where globalised agendas and local aspirations for change seem to be conflating around normative and universalised language and practices. The central concern in this article is to explore the possibilities and challenges of understanding education as a practice in light of a postcolonial experience, particularly through Eric Williams’ book Education in the British West Indies (1946). The ideas and work of Eric Williams have been instrumental in shaping and creating anti-colonial thinking in the Caribbean and internationally at a time when nationalism and anti-colonial struggles were rife and the aspiration for independence for many colonies, an urgent agenda. Williams’ work, through his life as a scholar, teacher and politician, exemplified a counterpoint to the colonial experience by crafting a different set of images for Caribbean peoples. His was a decolonising vision for the education of Caribbean people to write their own histories and chart their own destinies on their own terms. For Williams, education as political action through public participation was central to this process of decolonisation. This important text, I will argue, can be read as a source of educational theorising that asserts a decolonising stance, modelling ‘post-colonial pedagogy’ (McCarthy and Sealey-Ruiz, 2010 p. 75) and drawing references to historical themes that come together to represent the persistent and urgent struggle to resist ‘the inner plantation’ (Brathwaite, 1973).peer-reviewe

Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui bagaimana pengaturan wewenang pejabat imigrasi dan perannya dalam mengoptimalkan pengawasan orang asing menurut Undang-Undang Nomor 6 Tahun 2011 tentang Keimigrasian dan bagaimana pengaturan wewenang Penyidik Pegawai Negeri Sipil Keimigrasian dan perannya dalam mengoptimalkan pengawasan orang asing menurut Undang-Undang Nomor 6 Tahun 2011 tentang Keimigrasian, di mana dengan menggunakan metode penelitian hukum normatif disimpulkan bahwa: 1. Pengaturan wewenang Pejabat Imigrasi, sekalipun dilakukan secara tersebar dalam berbagai pasal dalam Undang-Undang Nomor 6 Tahun 2010, tetapi wewenang Pejabat Imigrasi cukup luas sehingga dapat berperan menunjang optimalisasi pengawasan orang asing; hal ini dengan catatan bahwa yang senantiasa diperlukan yaitu fasilitas dan informasi keimigrasian secara dalam jaringan (online) untuk menunjang berbagai aspek kegiatan keimigrasian.pengaturan wewenang pejabat imigrasi dan perannya dalam mengoptimalkan pengawasan orang asing. 2. La Capella di Santa Caterina di Alessandria nella Chiesa di Santa Maria in Castello. Carpi, Modena, Italia.

El presente estudio se ha centrado en analizar la capilla de Santa Catalina de Alejandría situada en la iglesia de Santa María in Castello de Carpi, Módena. En primer lugar, hemos querido fijar nuestra atención en los trabajos realizados y publicados con anterioridad al nuestro, situando a continuación el marco espacio temporal en el que se realizaron las pinturas y su contexto local, pasamos después al análisis de los temas iconográficos que encontramos en paredes y techo de la estancia. Los argumentos que se disponen en forma de fresco al intonaco, versan sobre la hagiografía de Santa Catalina de Alejandría y la imagen de la Anunciación, todo ello coronado por un discurso angélico de Dios Padre y el tetramorfos. Es en este análisis iconográfico donde hemos centrado nuestro trabajo y una de las razones de que el estudio biográfico del artista al que algunos atribuyen las pinturas se encuentre al final de este ensayo como ya hemos mencionado en la introducción. Podemos adelantar que el posible pintor es Giovanni da Módena, activo entre el 1398 y 1454 en esta zona de la Emilia Romagna entre Módena y Bolonia. Finalmente cabe destacar la presencia de otros frescos con estos mismos temas iconográficos en Italia en el siglo XIV y XV que nos sirven de justificación para la identificación de los temas, así como de ejemplos predecesores de los modelos iconográficos que aquí encontramos

The role of adrenocortical steroids in reversing established homograft rejection

Renal homotransplantation was performed in 8 dogs. Antirejection therapy with azathioprine (BW 57-322, Imuran) was given in doses of 2 to 7.5 mg. per kilogram per day. Evidence of rejection developed in all animals from 4 to 32 days following transplantation. When rejection had been established by at least 2 successive elevations of the BUN level, intramuscular injections of prednisolone (50 to 200 mg. per day) were added to the preexisting azathioprine therapy. Seven of the 8 animals had a favorable response evidenced by a falling BUN level, increased urine volumes, and decreasing proteinuria. Gastrointestinal bleeding was a serious complication in 6 of the 8 dogs. It was a direct or contributing cause of death in all 6. The rationale for the use of prednisolone in homotransplantation is discussed. From these experiments it would appear to be a valuable adjunct in reversing established rejection when added in large doses to preexisting antirejection therapy with azathioprine. Vigorous antacid therapy is indicated to prevent gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. © 1964

Pemaknaan Mahasiswa Tentang Aksi Bullying Dalam Drama Korea My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemaknaan mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi angkatan 2018 Universitas Bengkulu mengenai aksi bullying dalam drama Korea My ID is Gangnam Beauty. Drama Korea ini menampilkan beberapa adegan bullying yang tentunya memiliki tujuan tertentu. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis resepsi milik Stuart Hall yang berfokus pada khalayak sebagai penonton aktif dalam memaknai dan mengiterpretasikan segala tayangan yang terdapat dalam drama Korea. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan sumber primer yaitu observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Dalam pemilihan informan pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Informan memiliki keberagaman pemaknaan mengenai aksi bullying dalam drama Korea My ID is Gangnam Beauty melalui analisis resepsi Stuart Hall informan dikategorikan  ke dalam 3 posisi yaitu posisi dominan hegemoni, posisi negosiasi, dan posisi oposisi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa informan penelitian lebih banyak di posisi dominan hegemoni. Terdapat 3 orang informan berada di posisi dominan hegemoni, 1 orang berada di posisi negosiasi dan 1 orang berada di posisi oposisi. Khalayak sebagai penonton tayangan ini mampu memaknai aksi bullying berdasarkan pemahaman, penerimaan, serta penilaian masing-masing. Kata kunci: Pemaknaan, Bullying, Drama Kore

Acoustic scattering by two fluid confocal prolate spheroids

The exact spheroidal-function series solution for the time-harmonic acoustic scattering of a plane wave by two fluid confocal prolate spheroids is developed and a numerical implementation is formulated and validated by independent methods. The two spheroids define three regions in which the acoustic fields are expanded in terms of spheroidal wave functions multiplied by unknown coefficients. These expansions are forced to satisfy the boundary conditions and by using the orthogonality properties of the involved functions an infinite matricial system for the coefficients is obtained. The resulting system is then solved through a truncation procedure. The implementation has no limitations regarding the sound speed and density of the three media involved or in the incidence frequency.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

Q curvature and gravity

In this paper, we consider a family of n-dimensional, higher-curvature theories of gravity whose action is given by a series of dimensionally extended conformal invariants. The latter correspond to higher-order generalizations of the Branson Q curvature, which is an important notion of conformal geometry that has been recently considered in physics in different contexts. The family of theories we study here includes special cases of conformal invariant theories in even dimensions.
