    Teaching Appropriate Play to Replace Stereotypy Using a Treatment Package with Students Having Autism

    Students with special education needs such as autism tend to have difficulty with appropriate play skills and leisure time skills.┬á A lack of play may lead to inappropriate behaviors such as stereotypy or passivity.┬á When students have a limited community of reinforcers it may be difficult for educators to find motivators that can be used to teach language, social, academics, and other skills. The present study tested a treatment package in a small group format on the on task painting behavior and stereotypy of four boys between 5 and 12 years old having autism.┬á Using a delayed multiple baseline across students experimental design, a functional relationship was demonstrated between an observed increase in on task painting behavior and decrease in stereotypy of all four students as a function of their participation.┬á Limitations of the present study were also discussed.┬

    Tree biomass equations from terrestrial LiDAR : a case study in Guyana

    Large uncertainties in tree and forest carbon estimates weaken national efforts to accurately estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) for their national monitoring, measurement, reporting and verification system. Allometric equations to estimate biomass have improved, but remain limited. They rely on destructive sampling; large trees are under-represented in the data used to create them; and they cannot always be applied to different regions. These factors lead to uncertainties and systematic errors in biomass estimations. We developed allometric models to estimate tree AGB in Guyana. These models were based on tree attributes (diameter, height, crown diameter) obtained from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point clouds from 72 tropical trees and wood density. We validated our methods and models with data from 26 additional destructively harvested trees. We found that our best TLS-derived allometric models included crown diameter, provided more accurate AGB estimates (R-2 = 0.92-0.93) than traditional pantropical models (R-2 = 0.85-0.89), and were especially accurate for large trees (diameter > 70 cm). The assessed pantropical models underestimated AGB by 4 to 13%. Nevertheless, one pantropical model (Chave et al. 2005 without height) consistently performed best among the pantropical models tested (R-2 = 0.89) and predicted AGB accurately across all size classes-which but for this could not be known without destructive or TLS-derived validation data. Our methods also demonstrate that tree height is difficult to measure in situ, and the inclusion of height in allometric models consistently worsened AGB estimates. We determined that TLS-derived AGB estimates were unbiased. Our approach advances methods to be able to develop, test, and choose allometric models without the need to harvest trees

    Clinical measurements versus patient-reported outcomes: analysis of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons physician assessment in patients undergoing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

    BackgroundThe American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score is composed of a patient-reported portion and a physician assessment. Although the patient-reported score is frequently used to assess postoperative outcomes after shoulder arthroplasty, no previous studies have used the physician-assessment component. This study evaluated the relationship of the ASES physician-assessment measurements with patient-reported shoulder and general health outcomes.MethodsA retrospective review of a prospectively collected multicenter database was used to analyze patients who underwent primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) from 2012 to 2015 with a minimum 2-year follow-up. ASES physician-assessment and patient-reported components and 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) general health questionnaires were obtained preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively. The relationship between ASES physician measurements with ASES patient-reported outcome (PRO) scores and SF-12 Physical and Mental domain scores was assessed with Pearson correlation coefficients.ResultsIncluded were 74 patients (32 men; mean age, 69.2 years; body mass index, 29.4 kg/m2). Preoperative physician measurements and PRO scores were not significantly correlated. Postoperatively, only the ASES physician-measured active (R = 0.54, P < .01) and passive forward flexion (R = 0.53, P < .01) demonstrated moderate correlation with ASES patient scores. The remaining clinical measurements had no significant correlations with ASES patient or SF-12 scores. During the 2-year period, only improvements in active forward flexion correlated with improvements in ASES patient scores (R = 0.36, P < .01).ConclusionsLittle correlation exists between clinical measurements from the ASES physician component and PROs, including the ASES patient-reported and SF-12 general health surveys, in RTSA patients. Improvement in active forward flexion is the only clinical measurement correlated with PRO improvement at 2 years

    Costa Rica Virtual Corridor Project: Forest Connectivity

    Professor Felipe Montoya has presented York University’s Las Nubes ecological corridor forest fragmentation as an problem that must be solved. Roads have fragmented the ecological corridor, with a potential for hydrodams also being installed for production of electricity. Professor Montoya would like to prevent fragmentation by determining which parcels of land are most important for its uninterrupted connectivity. Sufficient connectivity would prevent habitat fragmentation, which is deadly for the ecosystem. Such connectivity could be analyzed by using GIS software. Previous studies have already proven that GIS could be efficient on providing information of land use and land cover (Weng, 2002), as such, we will use GIS to study forest connectivity. Our group will set out to analyze and quantify which parts of the Las Nubes ecological corridor is most important to the connectivity of the forest. Our group hopes to present data, which can be used to further enhance connectivity of the forest to promote the health of the ecosystem

    Evaluating the long-term impact of the Fostering Changes training programme for foster carers in Wales, the Confidence in Care trial: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background The Fostering Changes programme was developed by the Adoption and Fostering National Team at the Maudsley Hospital, South London, in conjunction with King’s College London. It is a 12-week group-based training programme for foster and kin carers, which aims to build positive relationships between carers and children, encourage positive child behaviour and set appropriate limits, through a practical skills-based approach. The programme also aims to improve foster carers’ understanding of the causes of children’s social and emotional difficulties and their confidence in applying this knowledge in various situations. Methods This is a pragmatic open-label individually randomised controlled trial, with embedded process evaluation. A total of 237 participants will be recruited from Welsh Local Authorities and Independent Fostering Providers; those allocated to the intervention group will be offered enrolment in the next Fostering Changes programme group at their site. Participants in the control group will be offered the Fostering Changes programme at the end of the follow-up period. Data will be collected at baseline, immediately following the 12 week Fostering Changes intervention, and 12 months from the start of the Fostering Changes programme. The primary outcome measure assesses the extent to which carers feel able to cope with and make positive changes to the lives of their foster children and is measured by the Carer Efficacy Questionnaire at 12 months. Discussion The trial will determine whether the Fostering Changes programme, in the long term, can deliver important, significant differences to the way foster carers build positive relationships with their foster children, encourage positive child behaviour and set appropriate limits, compared with usual care

    A pragmatic randomised controlled trial of the fostering changes programme

    Background Many looked after young people in Wales are cared for by foster or kinship carers, usually as a consequence of maltreatment or developmentally traumatising experiences within a family context. Confidence in Care is a pragmatic unblinded individually randomised controlled parallel group trial evaluating a training programme to improve foster carer self-efficacy, when compared to usual care. Objective To determine whether group-based training improves foster carer self-efficacy. Participants and setting Participants are foster carers, currently looking after children aged 2+ years for at least 12 weeks. Carers from households where one or more carer had previously attended the training were not eligible. Sixteen local authorities and three independent fostering providers in Wales took part. Methods The primary outcome measure was the Carer Efficacy Questionnaire assessed at 12 months. Secondary outcomes included the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Quality of Attachment Questionnaire, Carer Defined Problems Scale, Carer Coping Strategies, placement moves. Results 312 consented foster carers were allocated to FC (n = 204) or usual care (n = 108) group. 65.3 % of FC group participants attended sufficient training sessions (8/12, including sessions three and four). There were no differences in carer-reported self-efficacy at 12 months (adjusted difference in means (95 % CI): -0.19 (-1.38 to 1.00)). Small differences in carer-reported child behaviour difficulties and carer coping strategies over time favoured the intervention but these effects diminished from three to 12 months. No other intervention effects were observed. Conclusions Although well-received by participants, training was associated with small and mostly short-term benefit for trial secondary outcomes.     Qualitative process evaluation of the Fostering Changes program for foster carers as part of the Confidence in Care randomized controlled trial

    Background Fostering Changes is an in-service training program for foster carers designed to enhance carer skills, coping strategies and carer-child relationships. The training program has been evaluated in a randomised controlled trial comparing Fostering Changes to usual care. Objective To conduct a qualitative process evaluation drawing on stakeholder perspectives to describe the logic model of Fostering Changes, identify potential mechanisms of impact of the program and enhance understanding of the trial results. Participants and setting Participants were stakeholders in the Fostering Changes program delivered in Wales, UK including foster carers invited to attend the program (18 attendees, eight non-attendees), two program developers, five trainers, 12 social workers who attended or recruited to the program. Methods Total population sampling with qualitative data collection methods. Qualitative data were subject to thematic analysis. Results A logic model summarising the program resources, activities and anticipated outcomes was generated. Implementation themes were quality of training, setting and group composition. Mechanisms of impact were identified with themes falling into two categories, group process and skills development. Potential barriers to effectiveness included a poor fit between the carer needs and the program in relation to levels of challenge being faced, age-appropriate content and responsiveness. Contextual factors were also relevant, including the existing relationship between foster carers and the agency and the perceived value of training
