Bone and metal - an orthopaedic perspective on osseointegration of metals
The area of implant osseointegration is of major importance, given the predicted significant rise in the number of orthopaedic procedures and an increasingly ageing population. Osseointegration is a complex process involving a number of distinct mechanisms affected by the implant bulk properties and surface characteristics. Our understanding and ability to modify these mechanisms through alterations in implant design is continuously expanding. The following review considers the main aspects of material and surface alterations in metal implants, and the extent of their subsequent influence on osseointegration. Clinically, osseointegration results in asymptomatic stable durable fixation of orthopaedic implants. The complexity of achieving this outcome through incorporation and balance of contributory factors is highlighted through a clinical case report
Recombinant expression and functional analysis of proteases from Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus anthracis, and Yersinia pestis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Uncharacterized proteases naturally expressed by bacterial pathogens represents important topic in infectious disease research, because these enzymes may have critical roles in pathogenicity and cell physiology. It has been observed that cloning, expression and purification of proteases often fail due to their catalytic functions which, in turn, cause toxicity in the <it>E. coli </it>heterologous host.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In order to address this problem systematically, a modified pipeline of our high-throughput protein expression and purification platform was developed. This included the use of a specific <it>E. coli </it>strain, BL21(DE3) pLysS to tightly control the expression of recombinant proteins and various expression vectors encoding fusion proteins to enhance recombinant protein solubility. Proteases fused to large fusion protein domains, maltosebinding protein (MBP), SP-MBP which contains signal peptide at the N-terminus of MBP, disulfide oxidoreductase (DsbA) and Glutathione S-transferase (GST) improved expression and solubility of proteases. Overall, 86.1% of selected protease genes including hypothetical proteins were expressed and purified using a combination of five different expression vectors. To detect novel proteolytic activities, zymography and fluorescence-based assays were performed and the protease activities of more than 46% of purified proteases and 40% of hypothetical proteins that were predicted to be proteases were confirmed.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Multiple expression vectors, employing distinct fusion tags in a high throughput pipeline increased overall success rates in expression, solubility and purification of proteases. The combinatorial functional analysis of the purified proteases using fluorescence assays and zymography confirmed their function.</p
Planetary Candidates Observed by Kepler VI: Planet Sample from Q1-Q16 (47 Months)
\We present the sixth catalog of Kepler candidate planets based on nearly 4
years of high precision photometry. This catalog builds on the legacy of
previous catalogs released by the Kepler project and includes 1493 new Kepler
Objects of Interest (KOIs) of which 554 are planet candidates, and 131 of these
candidates have best fit radii <1.5 R_earth. This brings the total number of
KOIs and planet candidates to 7305 and 4173 respectively. We suspect that many
of these new candidates at the low signal-to-noise limit may be false alarms
created by instrumental noise, and discuss our efforts to identify such
objects. We re-evaluate all previously published KOIs with orbital periods of
>50 days to provide a consistently vetted sample that can be used to improve
planet occurrence rate calculations. We discuss the performance of our planet
detection algorithms, and the consistency of our vetting products. The full

TOI-2119: A transiting brown dwarf orbiting an active M-dwarf from NASA’s TESS mission
We report the discovery of TOI-2119b, a transiting brown dwarf (BD) that
orbits and is completely eclipsed by an active M-dwarf star. Using light curve
data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission and follow-up
high-resolution Doppler spectroscopic observations, we find the BD has a radius
of , a mass of , an
orbital period of days, and an eccentricity of
. The host star has a mass of , a radius of , an effective
temperature of K, and a metallicity of . TOI-2119b joins an emerging population of transiting BDs
around M-dwarf host stars, with TOI-2119 being the ninth such system. These
M-dwarf--brown dwarf systems typically occupy mass ratios near , which separates them from the typical mass ratios for systems
with transiting substellar objects and giant exoplanets that orbit more massive
stars. The nature of the secondary eclipse of the BD by the star enables us to
estimate the effective temperature of the substellar object to be K, which is consistent with predictions by substellar evolutionary models.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, accepted in MNRA
TIC 168789840: A Sextuply-Eclipsing Sextuple Star System
We report the discovery of a sextuply-eclipsing sextuple star system from
TESS data, TIC 168789840, also known as TYC 7037-89-1, the first known sextuple
system consisting of three eclipsing binaries. The target was observed in
Sectors 4 and 5 during Cycle 1, with lightcurves extracted from TESS Full Frame
Image data. It was also previously observed by the WASP survey and ASAS-SN. The
system consists of three gravitationally-bound eclipsing binaries in a
hierarchical structure of an inner quadruple system with an outer binary
subsystem. Follow-up observations from several different observatories were
conducted as a means of determining additional parameters. The system was
resolved by speckle interferometry with a 0."42 separation between the inner
quadruple and outer binary, inferring an estimated outer period of ~2 kyr. It
was determined that the fainter of the two resolved components is an 8.217 day
eclipsing binary, which orbits the inner quadruple that contains two eclipsing
binaries with periods of 1.570 days and 1.306 days. MCMC analysis of the
stellar parameters has shown that the three binaries of TIC 168789840 are
"triplets", as each binary is quite similar to the others in terms of mass,
radius, and Teff. As a consequence of its rare composition, structure, and
orientation, this object can provide important new insight into the formation,
dynamics, and evolution of multiple star systems. Future observations could
reveal if the intermediate and outer orbital planes are all aligned with the
planes of the three inner eclipsing binaries

Transits of Known Planets Orbiting a Naked-Eye Star
© 2020 The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.Some of the most scientifically valuable transiting planets are those that were already known from radial velocity (RV) surveys. This is primarily because their orbits are well characterized and they preferentially orbit bright stars that are the targets of RV surveys. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) provides an opportunity to survey most of the known exoplanet systems in a systematic fashion to detect possible transits of their planets. HD 136352 (Nu2 Lupi) is a naked-eye (V = 5.78) G-type main-sequence star that was discovered to host three planets with orbital periods of 11.6, 27.6, and 108.1 days via RV monitoring with the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) spectrograph. We present the detection and characterization of transits for the two inner planets of the HD 136352 system, revealing radii of 1.482-0.056+0.058 R ⊕ and 2.608-0.077+0.078 R ⊕ for planets b and c, respectively. We combine new HARPS observations with RV data from the Keck/High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer and the Anglo-Australian Telescope, along with TESS photometry from Sector 12, to perform a complete analysis of the system parameters. The combined data analysis results in extracted bulk density values of ρb = 7.8-1.1+1.2 g cm-3 and ρc = 3.50-0.36+0.41 g cm-3 for planets b and c, respectively, thus placing them on either side of the radius valley. The combination of the multitransiting planet system, the bright host star, and the diversity of planetary interiors and atmospheres means this will likely become a cornerstone system for atmospheric and orbital characterization of small worlds.Peer reviewe

The production of tt‾ , W+bb‾ and W+cc‾ is studied in the forward region of proton–proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98±0.02 fb−1 . The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓν , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets. Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV
Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton
collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against
a boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and
transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range . The
data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy
of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb. Triple
differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum
fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also
measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent
fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the
measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into

Study of the decay
The decay is studied
in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5
collected by the LHCb experiment. In the system, the
state observed at the BaBar and Belle experiments is
resolved into two narrower states, and ,
whose masses and widths are measured to be where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second
systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a
prompt sample. Evidence of a new
state is found with a local significance of , whose mass and width
are measured to be and , respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode
is found with a significance of
. The relative branching fraction of with respect to the
decay is measured to be , where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from
