An effort to make sense of antisense transcription in bacteria

    Get PDF
Analysis of bacterial transcriptomes have shown the existence of a genome-wide process of overlapping transcription due to the presence of antisense RNAs, as well as mRNAs that overlapped in their entire length or in some portion of the 5'- and 3'-UTR regions. The biological advantages of such overlapping transcription are unclear but may play important regulatory roles at the level of transcription, RNA stability and translation. In a recent report, the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is observed to generate genome-wide overlapping transcription in the same bacterial cells leading to a collection of short RNA fragments generated by the endoribonuclease III, RNase III. This processing appears most prominently in Gram-positive bacteria. The implications of both the use of pervasive overlapping transcription and the processing of these double stranded templates into short RNAs are explored and the consequences discussed

The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in Malaysia is increasing. It is essentials to assess the quality of life (QoL) of T2DM to measure outcome of T2DM for better care and control of the disease. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with QoL among adult patients with T2DM. A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending diabetic clinic in Seremban 2 Health Clinic. Patients were selected using systematic random sampling method and data collection gathered by self-administered questionnaire. SF-36 was used for assessing the QoL which has 8 health domains and 2 component summaries that incorporated both physical and mental component. The response rate was 89%. QoL were found significantly associated with socio-demographic factors such as age (PF: p=0.043), gender (PF: p<0.001, BP: p=0.013 & PCS: p=0.007), ethnicity (BP: p=0.03), education level (RP: p=0.006, GH: p=0.038, VT: p=0.009, RE: p=0.012, MH: p=0.001, PCS: p=0.037, & MCS: p<0.001), marital status (VT: p=0.027), and employment status (PF: p<0.001, RP: p<0.001, GH: p<0.001 & VT: p=0.041). Lower QoL scores were observed in older age group, females gender, lower education, divorced/widowed and unemployed. Clinical profiles such as diabetic duration (PF: p=0.005, RP: p=0.033, GH: p=0.004, RE: p=0.044 and PCS (p=0.003), and presence of co-morbidity (PF: p=0.012) were also significantly associated with QoL in various SF-36 domains. Type of treatment was significantly associated with QoL in all domains (p<0.05) except in BP. Glycemic control significantly associated with QoL in RP (p=0.008), BP (p=0.002), GH (p=0.003), RE (p=0.009), PCS (p=0.001), and MCS (p=0.017). Diabetic complication was significantly associated with all the 8 health domains and 2 component summaries (p<0.01). In conclusion, socio-demographic, diabetic complication, co-morbidity, duration, treatment types and glycemic control were found to be associated with QoL among T2DM patients

The CREC Riser Simulator Reactor is a novel mini-fluidized reactor. This novel device was invented by de Lasa 1. The applications of this unit has shown to be of great value to establish catalyst performance and kinetic models for a diversity of gas phase catalytic reactions. This has been the case, given that the CREC Riser Simulator is excellent with respect to particle and fluid mixing2. This study establishes using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), the CREC Riser Simulator mixing flow patterns. CFD simulations were developed using the COMSOL Multiphysics® module. Fig.1a reports the geometric characteristics of the CREC Riser Simulator including the impeller, the basket containing the catalyst and the external baffles. The proposed CFD model was validated using experimental data obtained in a basket as shown in Fig.1a. For instance, for an impeller speed of 4000 rpm, the outer annulus experimental gas velocity2 was ~0.9 m/s and the simulated CFD gas velocity2 was ~1.3 m/s.

This paper analyses the sources of "Fabio's moral epistole letter", focusing on both its forms and contents as well as on the range of themes and metaphorical images that made its possible the creating of this book. It is my intention to cutline a chronological spectrum going form Fernando de Herrera and Jerónimo de Lomas Cantoral until contemporary authors such as Juan de Arguijo, Francisco de Medrano and Francisco de Rioja. The main objective is to prove that, around 1610, there existed already a complex breeding ground regarding poetic meters, images and forms from which this book could appear

The aim of this paper is to show a critical contextualization of technological change and its analysis in hunter/gatherer societies. First of all we describe what factors or causes generate changes in social practices. Subsequently, material criteria (artifact, raw material, site) will be defined to identify technological changes. Finally, it is proposed as a case of study of hunter-gatherer societies that inhabited the Interserrana area (Buenos Aires province) during the middle and late Holocene.L’objectif de ce travail est la contextualisation critique du changement technologique et son étude dans les sociétés d'économie chasseuse-cueilleuse. Temperature dependence of underdense nanostructure formation in tungsten under helium irradiation

    Get PDF
Recently, tungsten has been found to form a highly underdense nanostructured morphology ("W fuzz") when bombarded by an intense flux of He ions, but only in the temperature window 900-2000 K. Using object kinetic Monte Carlo simulations (pseudo-3D simulations) parameterized from first principles, we show that this temperature dependence can be understood based on He and point defect clustering, cluster growth, and detrapping reactions. At low temperatures (2300 K), all He is detrapped from clusters, preventing the formation of the large clusters that lead to fuzz growth in the intermediate temperature range. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.
