    Slow modulation of cochlear response by the olivocochlear efferent system elicited by sustained noise or threshold elevation in the contralateral ear

First, we investigated peripheral olivocochlear effects of sustained contralateral broadband noise in anesthetized guinea pig. We found evidence of medial olivocochlear (MOC) effects on two timescales: the classic MOC 'fast effect', followed by a gradually increasing suppression, which we call the MOC 'delayed effect'. Delayed suppression typically takes 2-3 minutes to build up, occurs at all frequencies of guinea pig hearing, and suppresses distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), compound action potentials (CAPs), and round window noise. In contrast to the MOC slow effect, which has been reported for sustained shockevoked MOC activity, MOC delayed suppression does not build up in the outer hair cells but is due to a central modulation (enhancement) of MOC responsiveness and can thus be viewed as a gradual increase in the strength of the MOC fast effect. We found that, on average, the magnitude of the delayed suppression is comparable to that of the MOC fast effect, but that there is an overall negative correlation between fast and delayed effect magnitudes. Thus, it may have significant implications for the functional roles of the MOC system, such as protection against acoustic trauma, anti-masking, and dynamic range extension. Second, we investigated the LOC bilateral balancing model, which proposes that the LOC system acts to balance long-term average neural output from both cochleae, which would be important for binaural processing of sounds. For this, we tested various cohorts of mice by repeatedly measuring bilateral auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and "DPOAE growth functions across a wide range of frequencies and levels for periods of about 1-2 months. About halfway through the period, a unilateral reduction in neural output was created, either by acoustic overexposure or conductive impairment. Although the LOC balancing model predicts that the unilateral reduction in neural output should be matched contralaterally, we found no evidence for short-term or long-term efferent-induced contralateral response changes in any of the cohorts, either for DPOAE or ABR metrics.(cont.)     Using mixed data in the inverse scattering problem

    Consider the fixed-\ell inverse scattering problem. We show that the zeros of the regular solution of the Schr\"odinger equation, rn(E)r_{n}(E), which are monotonic functions of the energy, determine a unique potential when the domain of the energy is such that the rn(E)r_{n}(E) range from zero to infinity. This suggests that the use of the mixed data of phase-shifts {δ(0,k),kk0}{δ(,k0),0}\{\delta(\ell_0,k), k \geq k_0 \} \cup \{\delta(\ell,k_0), \ell \geq \ell_0 \}, for which the zeros of the regular solution are monotonic in both domains, and range from zero to infinity, offers the possibility of determining the potential in a unique way.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures.     The UK market for energy service contracts in 2014–2015

    This paper provides an overview of the UK market for energy service contracts in 2014 and highlights the growing role of intermediaries. Using information from secondary literature and interviews, it identifies the businesses offering energy service contracts, the sectors and organisations that are purchasing those contracts, the types of contract that are available, the areas of market growth and the reasons for that growth. The paper finds that the UK market is relatively large, highly diverse, concentrated in particular sectors and types of site and overwhelmingly focused upon established technologies with high rates of return. A major driver is the emergence of procurement frameworks for energy service contracts in the public sector. These act as intermediaries between clients and contractors, thereby lowering transaction costs and facilitating learning. The market is struggling to become established in commercial offices, largely as a result of split incentives, and is unlikely to develop further in this sector without different business models, tenancy arrangements and policy initiatives. Overall, the paper concludes that energy service contracts can play an important role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, especially when supported by intermediaries, but their potential is still limited by high transaction costs

    Individual Eigenvalue Distributions for the Wilson Dirac Operator

    We derive the distributions of individual eigenvalues for the Hermitian Wilson Dirac Operator D5 as well as for real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac Operator DW. The framework we provide is valid in the epsilon regime of chiral perturbation theory for any number of flavours Nf and for non-zero low energy constants W6, W7, W8. It is given as a perturbative expansion in terms of the k-point spectral density correlation functions and integrals thereof, which in some cases reduces to a Fredholm Pfaffian. For the real eigenvalues of DW at fixed chirality nu this expansion truncates after at most nu terms for small lattice spacing "a". Explicit examples for the distribution of the first and second eigenvalue are given in the microscopic domain as a truncated expansion of the Fredholm Pfaffian for quenched D5, where all k-point densities are explicitly known from random matrix theory.     CMB as a possible new tool to study the dark baryons in galaxies

    Baryons constitute about 4% of our universe, but most of them are missing and we do not know where and in what form they are hidden. This constitute the so-called missing baryon problem. A possibility is that part of these baryons are hidden in galactic halos. We show how the 7-year data obtained by the WMAP satellite may be used to trace the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31. We detect a temperature asymmetry in the M31 halo along the rotation direction up to about 120 kpc. This could be the first detection of a galactic halo in microwaves and may open a new way to probe hidden baryons in these relatively less studied galactic objects using high accuracy CMB measurements.Comment: 8 pages, presented at the III Italian-Pakistani Workshop on Relativistic Astrophysics, Lecce, June 20-22, 2011; to be published in Journal of Physics: Conference Serie

    DNA Methylation of the ABO Promoter Underlies Loss of ABO Allelic Expression in a Significant Proportion of Leukemic Patients

    Background: Loss of A, B and H antigens from the red blood cells of patients with myeloid malignancies is a frequent occurrence. Previously, we have reported alterations in ABH antigens on the red blood cells of 55% of patients with myeloid malignancies. Methodology/Principal Findings: To determine the underlying molecular mechanisms of this loss, we assessed ABO allelic expression in 21 patients with ABH antigen loss previously identified by flow cytometric analysis as well as an additional 7 patients detected with ABH antigen changes by serology. When assessing ABO mRNA allelic expression, 6/12 (50%) patients with ABH antigen loss detected by flow cytometry and 5/7 (71%) of the patients with ABH antigen loss detected by serology had a corresponding ABO mRNA allelic loss of expression. We examined the ABO locus for copy number and DNA methylation alterations in 21 patients, 11 with loss of expression of one or both ABO alleles, and 10 patients with no detectable allelic loss of ABO mRNA expression. No loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at the ABO locus was observed in these patients. However in 8/11 (73%) patients with loss of ABO allelic expression, the ABO promoter was methylated compared with 2/10 (20%) of patients with no ABO allelic expression loss (P = 0.03). Conclusions/Significance: We have found that loss of ABH antigens in patients with hematological malignancies is associated with a corresponding loss of ABO allelic expression in a significant proportion of patients.     Natural boundaries for the Smoluchowski equation and affiliated diffusion processes

    The Schr\"{o}dinger problem of deducing the microscopic dynamics from the input-output statistics data is known to admit a solution in terms of Markov diffusions. The uniqueness of solution is found linked to the natural boundaries respected by the underlying random motion. By choosing a reference Smoluchowski diffusion process, we automatically fix the Feynman-Kac potential and the field of local accelerations it induces. We generate the family of affiliated diffusions with the same local dynamics, but different inaccessible boundaries on finite, semi-infinite and infinite domains. For each diffusion process a unique Feynman-Kac kernel is obtained by the constrained (Dirichlet boundary data) Wiener path integration.As a by-product of the discussion, we give an overview of the problem of inaccessible boundaries for the diffusion and bring together (sometimes viewed from unexpected angles) results which are little known, and dispersed in publications from scarcely communicating areas of mathematics and physics.Comment: Latex file, Phys.     Socio-Economic Position and Type 2 Diabetes Risk Factors: Patterns in UK Children of South Asian, Black African-Caribbean and White European Origin

    BACKGROUND: Socio-economic position (SEP) and ethnicity influence type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk in adults. However, the influence of SEP on emerging T2DM risks in different ethnic groups and the contribution of SEP to ethnic differences in T2DM risk in young people have been little studied. We examined the relationships between SEP and T2DM risk factors in UK children of South Asian, black African-Caribbean and white European origin, using the official UK National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) and assessed the extent to which NS-SEC explained ethnic differences in T2DM risk factors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Cross-sectional school-based study of 4,804 UK children aged 9-10 years, including anthropometry and fasting blood analytes (response rates 70%, 68% and 58% for schools, individuals and blood measurements). Assessment of SEP was based on parental occupation defined using NS-SEC and ethnicity on parental self-report. Associations between NS-SEC and adiposity, insulin resistance (IR) and triglyceride differed between ethnic groups. In white Europeans, lower NS-SEC status was related to higher ponderal index (PI), fat mass index, IR and triglyceride (increases per NS-SEC decrement [95%CI] were 1.71% [0.75, 2.68], 4.32% [1.24, 7.48], 5.69% [2.01, 9.51] and 3.17% [0.96, 5.42], respectively). In black African-Caribbeans, lower NS-SEC was associated with lower PI (-1.12%; [-2.01, -0.21]), IR and triglyceride, while in South Asians there were no consistent associations between NS-SEC and T2DM risk factors. Adjustment for NS-SEC did not appear to explain ethnic differences in T2DM risk factors, which were particularly marked in high NS-SEC groups. CONCLUSIONS: SEP is associated with T2DM risk factors in children but patterns of association differ by ethnic groups. Consequently, ethnic differences (which tend to be largest in affluent socio-economic groups) are not explained by NS-SEC. This suggests that strategies aimed at reducing social inequalities in T2DM risk are unlikely to reduce emerging ethnic differences in T2DM risk

    Filtration analysis of pedestrian-vehicle interactions for autonomous vehicle control

    Interacting with humans remains a challenge for autonomousvehicles (AVs). When a pedestrian wishes to cross the road in front of thevehicle at an unmarked crossing, the pedestrian and AV must competefor the space, which may be considered as a game-theoretic interaction inwhich one agent must yield to the other. To inform development of newreal-time AV controllers in this setting, this study collects and analy-ses detailed, manually-annotated, temporal data from real-world humanroad crossings as they interact with manual drive vehicles. It studies thetemporal orderings (filtrations) in which features are revealed to the ve-hicle and their informativeness over time. It presents a new frameworksuggesting how optimal stopping controllers may then use such data toenable an AV to decide when to act (by speeding up, slowing down, orotherwise signalling intent to the pedestrian) or alternatively, to continueat its current speed in order to gather additional information from newfeatures, including signals from that pedestrian, before acting itself

    Self-esteem is associated with premorbid adjustment and positive psychotic symptoms in early psychosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Low levels of self-esteem have been implicated as both a cause and a consequence of severe mental disorders. The main aims of the study were to examine whether premorbid adjustment has an impact on the subject's self-esteem, and whether lowered self-esteem contributes to the development of delusions and hallucinations.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>A total of 113 patients from the Thematically Organized Psychosis research study (TOP) were included at first treatment. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess present symptoms. Premorbid adjustment was measured with the Premorbid Adjustment Scale (PAS) and self-esteem by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Premorbid social adjustment was significantly related to lower self-esteem and explained a significant proportion of the variance in self-esteem. Self-esteem was significantly associated with the levels of persecutory delusions and hallucinations experienced by the patient and explained a significant proportion of the variance even after adjusting for premorbid functioning and depression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There are reasons to suspect that premorbid functioning is an important aspect in the development of self- esteem, and, furthermore, that self-esteem is associated with the development of delusions and hallucinations.</p
