Enhancement of synchronized vortex lattice motion in hybrid magnetic/amorphous superconducting nanostructures

    Get PDF
Superconducting a-Mo_(3)Si and Nb films have been grown on arrays of Ni nanodots. We have studied the vortex lattice dynamics close to critical temperatures. Different vortex lattice configurations are obtained with the same array unit cell. These different vortex lattices occur at matching conditions between the vortex lattice and the array unit cell. The interplay between the random intrinsic pinning of the superconducting films and the periodic pinning of the array govern the vortex lattice configurations. Different vortex lattice configurations and enhancement of synchronized vortex lattice motion are obtained by increasing the periodic pinning strength and decreasing the random pinning strength

Versión aceptada Versión online publicada en 2017 Versión Print publicada en 2018The current paper describes Spanish acquisition of rhotic onset clusters. Data are also provided on related singleton taps/trills and /l/ as a single ton and in clusters. Participants included 9 typically developing (TD) toddlers and 30 TD preschoolers in Chile, and 30 TD preschoolers and 29 with protracted phonological development (PPD) in Granada, Spain. Results showed age and developmental group effects. Preservation of cluster timing units preceded segmental accuracy, especially in stressed syllables. Tap clusters versus singleton trills were variable in order of mastery, some children mastering clusters first, and others, the trill. Rhotics were acquired later than /l/. In early development, mismatches (errors) involved primarily deletion of taps; where substitutions occurred, [j] frequently replaced tap. In later development, [l] more frequently replaced tap; where taps did occur, vowel epenthesis sometimes occurred. The data serve as a criterion reference database for onset cluster acquisition in Chilean and Granada Spanish.Thank you also for funding by the: - Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant 410-2009-0348, - Programa FONDECYT de la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica CONICYT [National Commission for Scientific and Technological Investigation] in Chile. - Junta de Andalucía in Spain, Grupo de Investigación Hum-605, Logopedia Experimental y Aplicada [Experimental and applied speech-language pathology]

Comprehending socio-relational factors of mental wellbeing in the oldest old within Nordic and Mediterranean countries

Socio-relational aspects are essential for mental wellbeing (MWB), especially in the oldest old age. Our study aims to explore the socio-relational aspects related to MWB in accord ance with the experiences of the oldest old of four European countries; and to examine how these differ between Mediterranean and Nordic people. A total of 117 participants aged 80+ years old were recruited, and 23 focus groups were performed. Qualitative con tent analysis identified five main themes. Family seemed to be the most important driver of the MWB of the oldest old, followed by relationships with close friends. Participants felt better when they had a sense of being needed, cared for, and connected. Loneliness and isolation negatively affected MWB, although solitude was appreciated. Differences appeared between Mediterranean and Nordic regions. Initiatives to promote positive interactions with family and friends, as well as social activities within the community, may contribute to strengthening MWB in the oldest ol

Due to their chemical persistence and high lipophilicity, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have a tendency to accumulate and biomagnify in the food chain. Because of its easy noninvasive collection and high-fat content, human milk is a good indicator POPs in human populations. The aim of our study was to evaluate human exposure to POPs (PCBs, DDTs and its metabolites, α, β y γ HCHs, CHLDs: heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, trans- and cis-chlordanes and nonachlors) in 59 human milk samples collected during 2010-2011 in Punta Lara, Ensenada, Florencio Varela and Buenos Aires.

Magnetic pinning of flux lattice in superconducting- nanomagnet hybrids

    Get PDF
Strong superconducting pinning effects are observed from magnetic landscapes produced by arrays of circular rings with varying magnetic remanent states. The collective and the background pinning of superconducting Nb films is strongly enhanced by the stray magnetic field produced by an array of circular Ni rings magnetized to form “onion” (bidomain) states. On the other hand, when the same rings are magnetized into vortex (flux-closed) states, or are randomly magnetized, the superconducting pinning is much smaller. The greatest pinning is produced when the superconducting vortex lattice motion is along a direction in which there is a strong magnetic field variation

Low levels of CIITA and high levels of SOCS1 predict COVID-19 disease severity in children and adults

It is unclear why COVID-19 ranges from asymptomatic to severe. When SARS-CoV-2 is detected, interferon (IFN) response is activated. When it is insufficient or delayed, it might lead to overproduction of cytokines and severe COVID-19. The aim was to compare cytokine and IFN patterns in children and adults with differing severity with SARS-CoV-2.It was a prospective, observational study, including 84 patients. Patients with moderate/severe disease had higher cytokines' values than patients with mild disease (p< 0.001).Two IFN genes were selected to build a decision tree for severity classification: SOCS1 (representative of the rest of the IFN genes) and CIITA (inverse correlation). Low values of CIITA and high values of SOCS1 indicated severe disease. This method correctly classified 33/38(86.8%) of children and 27/34 (79.4%) of adults. To conclude, patients with severe disease had an elevated cytokine pattern, which correlated with the IFN response, with low CIITA and high SOCS1 values. This study was supported by the projects PI18/00223, FI19/00208 and PI21/00211 to LA, integrated in the Plan Nacional de I + D + I and co-financed by the ISCIII– Subdirección General de Evaluación y Fomento de la Investigación Sanitaria – and the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), by Pla Estratègic de Recerca i Innovació en Salut (PERIS), Departament de Salut, Generalitat de Catalunya (SLT006/17/00199 to LA), and by CERCA Program/Generalitat de Catalunya.
