In the present article, we describe a congenital flexural limb deformity affecting the distal interphalangeal joint of the right hind limb in an 18-months old Spanish filly which positively responded to serial corrective shoeing procedures. There are different therapeutic options for the treatment of flexural limb deformity in the distal interphalangeal joint in horses: conservative treatment (changes in diet, controlled exercise intensity, oxytetracycline and medical pain management), surgical (inferior check ligament desmotomy and deep digital flexor tenotomy) and therapeutic shoeing. In the case presented here, because of the long duration of the process and because the owner refused the surgical option, we selected the orthopedic shoeing. In the first shoeing, we used a shoe bigger than the hoof, with cranial toe extensions. Additionally, we use alternative nail holes in quarters and heels. In the second shoeing, carried out 45 days after the first shoeing, we used a non-compensated shoe of the same size those used in the first shoeing. Furthermore, and because of the growth of the hoof, the heels were lowered. In the third shoeing, performed 45 days after the second, we observed that the toe grew up in the cranial toe extensions. We kept the alternative nail holes in order to avoid the holes in the toes promoting the growth of the hoof in the toes. Moreover, and in order to hold better the shoe, we applied with clicks in the toes. After 3 shoeing procedures, the filly underwent a marked improvement. It is concluded that a congenital flexural deformity affecting the distal interphalangeal joint might favorably respond in some cases to a series of corrective shoeing procedures without the necessity of additional treatments

Towards the end of the 1975-2002 civil war, Luanda, the capital of Angola, experienced unprecedented urban growth. The pressure to reduce the housing backlog gave rise to large scale governmental residential development initiatives such as the Nova Vida housing project. Although the project experienced minor cost and schedule overruns the key question remains as to whether or not the project met the desired quality parameters in terms of resident satisfaction. As part of overall project quality performance measurement and continuous improvement cycle procedures, a post-project evaluation was done to investigate the level of satisfaction of the Nova Vida residents with their homes. A questionnaire was distributed among the Nova Vida residents measuring four factors namely (i) house design and architecture, (ii) house functionality, (iii) accessibility, and (iv) neighbourhood and community amenities. From the results it was possible to assess that the main concerns related to design, planning and urban management of infrastructure, public services and utilities. In general dissatisfaction is significantly higher for apartment residents than for house residents. The objective of providing safe, practical and comfortable living space was achieved. The results provided insight into the experiences of the Nova Vida occupants and are valuable input towards improving the planning, design and quality of future government housing projects.http://www.journals.co.za/ej/ejour_jcman.htmlai201

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an important health problem that causes high mortality and morbidity. Correlations between some clinical and histopathological parameters were studied in 37 oral SCC. Some interesting aspects in oral SCC arising from precancerous lesions were found such as smaller size and a lower TNM stage at the moment of diagnosis. Histological and clinical differences were also found between tumors invading deep tissues by little groups of dissociated malignant cells and those invading by big masses of malignant cells. The possible significance of the intensity of peritumoral eosinophilic infiltrate was also studied.

    Heterotic Compactification, An Algorithmic Approach

We approach string phenomenology from the perspective of computational algebraic geometry, by providing new and efficient techniques for proving stability and calculating particle spectra in heterotic compactifications. This is done in the context of complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in a single projective space where we classify positive monad bundles. Using a combination of analytic methods and computer algebra we prove stability for all such bundles and compute the complete particle spectrum, including gauge singlets. In particular, we find that the number of anti-generations vanishes for all our bundles and that the spectrum is manifestly moduli-dependent.Comment: 36 pages, Late

Scattering of Stark-decelerated OH radicals with rare-gas atoms

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the rotationally inelastic scattering of OH (X\,^2\Pi_{3/2}, J=3/2, f) radicals with the collision partners He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and D2_2 as a function of the collision energy between 70\sim 70 cm1^{-1} and 400~cm1^{-1}. The OH radicals are state selected and velocity tuned prior to the collision using a Stark decelerator, and field-free parity-resolved state-to-state inelastic relative scattering cross sections are measured in a crossed molecular beam configuration. For all OH-rare gas atom systems excellent agreement is obtained with the cross sections predicted by close-coupling scattering calculations based on accurate \emph{ab initio} potential energy surfaces. This series of experiments complements recent studies on the scattering of OH radicals with Xe [Gilijamse \emph{et al.}, Science {\bf 313}, 1617 (2006)], Ar [Scharfenberg \emph{et al.}, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. {\bf 12}, 10660 (2010)], He, and D2_2 [Kirste \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 82}, 042717 (2010)]. A comparison of the relative scattering cross sections for this set of collision partners reveals interesting trends in the scattering behavior.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
