    Locating Depots for Capacitated Vehicle Routing

    We study a location-routing problem in the context of capacitated vehicle routing. The input is a set of demand locations in a metric space and a fleet of k vehicles each of capacity Q. The objective is to locate k depots, one for each vehicle, and compute routes for the vehicles so that all demands are satisfied and the total cost is minimized. Our main result is a constant-factor approximation algorithm for this problem. To achieve this result, we reduce to the k-median-forest problem, which generalizes both k-median and minimum spanning tree, and which might be of independent interest. We give a (3+c)-approximation algorithm for k-median-forest, which leads to a (12+c)-approximation algorithm for the above location-routing problem, for any constant c>0. The algorithm for k-median-forest is just t-swap local search, and we prove that it has locality gap 3+2/t; this generalizes the corresponding result known for k-median. Finally we consider the "non-uniform" k-median-forest problem which has different cost functions for the MST and k-median parts. We show that the locality gap for this problem is unbounded even under multi-swaps, which contrasts with the uniform case. Nevertheless, we obtain a constant-factor approximation algorithm, using an LP based approach.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    A zeta function approach to the relation between the numbers of symmetry planes and axes of a polytope

    A derivation of the Ces\`aro-Fedorov relation from the Selberg trace formula on an orbifolded 2-sphere is elaborated and extended to higher dimensions using the known heat-kernel coefficients for manifolds with piecewise-linear boundaries. Several results are obtained that relate the coefficients, bib_i, in the Shephard-Todd polynomial to the geometry of the fundamental domain.     SST-GATE: A dual mirror telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the world's first open observatory for very high energy gamma-rays. Around a hundred telescopes of different sizes will be used to detect the Cherenkov light that results from gamma-ray induced air showers in the atmosphere. Amongst them, a large number of Small Size Telescopes (SST), with a diameter of about 4 m, will assure an unprecedented coverage of the high energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum (above ~1TeV to beyond 100 TeV) and will open up a new window on the non-thermal sky. Several concepts for the SST design are currently being investigated with the aim of combining a large field of view (~9 degrees) with a good resolution of the shower images, as well as minimizing costs. These include a Davies-Cotton configuration with a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (GAPD) based camera, as pioneered by FACT, and a novel and as yet untested design based on the Schwarzschild-Couder configuration, which uses a secondary mirror to reduce the plate-scale and to allow for a wide field of view with a light-weight camera, e.g. using GAPDs or multi-anode photomultipliers. One objective of the GATE (Gamma-ray Telescope Elements) programme is to build one of the first Schwarzschild-Couder prototypes and to evaluate its performance. The construction of the SST-GATE prototype on the campus of the Paris Observatory in Meudon is under way.     Gender Disparity in Composition and Compensation Among Maryland Hospital Executives

    Introduction: Senior executive positions in hospitals have traditionally been held by men, and do not reflect the gender, racial, ethnic, and cultural diversities of the communities they serve. Despite sex parity in medical school graduates, women remain underrepresented in hospital executive leadership positions. In this study, the authors examined differences in gender composition and compensation of Maryland hospital executives. Methods: The authors examined 47 Maryland hospitals’ publicly available tax forms from 2013-2018. Data collected included hospital revenue and executive positions’ count, salary, and gender. Executive positions included President and/or Chief Executive Officer (P/CEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), and Chief Operating Officer (COO). All monetary values were inflation-adjusted to the 2017 dollar. Results: Women executives were underrepresented across most roles: P/CEO (41/272, 15%), CFO (72/260, 28%), CMO (28/182, 15%), and COO (44/147, 30%). CNO showed a higher proportion of women executives (129/140, 92%). There were no significant changes in the proportion of women executives over the study period (p=0.19). Men CNO’s had significantly higher salaries as a percentage of hospital revenue (0.16% vs 0.12%, p=0.04) and men COOs had significantly higher salaries as a percentage of hospital positive profit (3.65% vs 2.24%, p\u3c0.01). Conclusion: Data from Maryland hospitals suggest that women remain underrepresented in healthcare executive roles. Further, women executives are generally undercompensated compared to men in similar roles. This study further highlights the need for mentorship and dedicated career pathways to improve women representation in leadership roles in healthcare

    Dynamic Collection Scheduling Using Remote Asset Monitoring: Case Study in the UK Charity Sector

    Remote sensing technology is now coming onto the market in the waste collection sector. This technology allows waste and recycling receptacles to report their fill levels at regular intervals. This reporting enables collection schedules to be optimized dynamically to meet true servicing needs in a better way and so reduce transport costs and ensure that visits to clients are made in a timely fashion. This paper describes a real-life logistics problem faced by a leading UK charity that services its textile and book donation banks and its high street stores by using a common fleet of vehicles with various carrying capacities. Use of a common fleet gives rise to a vehicle routing problem in which visits to stores are on fixed days of the week with time window constraints and visits to banks (fitted with remote fill-monitoring technology) are made in a timely fashion so that the banks do not become full before collection. A tabu search algorithm was developed to provide vehicle routes for the next day of operation on the basis of the maximization of profit. A longer look-ahead period was not considered because donation rates to banks are highly variable. The algorithm included parameters that specified the minimum fill level (e.g., 50%) required to allow a visit to a bank and a penalty function used to encourage visits to banks that are becoming full. The results showed that the algorithm significantly reduced visits to banks and increased profit by up to 2.4%, with the best performance obtained when the donation rates were more variable

    The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppenheimer approach to the Maxwell electrodynamics in vacuum is investigated within the matrix formalism. The matrix form of electrodynamics includes three real 4 \times 4 matrices. Within the squaring procedure we construct four formal solutions of the Maxwell equations on the base of scalar Klein -- Fock -- Gordon solutions.     Integrative data mining highlights candidate genes for monogenic myopathies

    Inherited myopathies are a heterogeneous group of disabling disorders with still barely understood pathological mechanisms. Around 40% of afflicted patients remain without a molecular diagnosis after exclusion of known genes. The advent of high-throughput sequencing has opened avenues to the discovery of new implicated genes, but a working list of prioritized candidate genes is necessary to deal with the complexity of analyzing large-scale sequencing data. Here we used an integrative data mining strategy to analyze the genetic network linked to myopathies, derive specific signatures for inherited myopathy and related disorders, and identify and rank candidate genes for these groups. Training sets of genes were selected after literature review and used in Manteia, a public web-based data mining system, to extract disease group signatures in the form of enriched descriptor terms, which include functional annotation, human and mouse phenotypes, as well as biological pathways and protein interactions. These specific signatures were then used as an input to mine and rank candidate genes, followed by filtration against skeletal muscle expression and association with known diseases. Signatures and identified candidate genes highlight both potential common pathological mechanisms and allelic disease groups. Recent discoveries of gene associations to diseases, like B3GALNT2, GMPPB and B3GNT1 to congenital muscular dystrophies, were prioritized in the ranked lists, suggesting a posteriori validation of our approach and predictions. We show an example of how the ranked lists can be used to help analyze high-throughput sequencing data to identify candidate genes, and highlight the best candidate genes matching genomic regions linked to myopathies without known causative genes. This strategy can be automatized to generate fresh candidate gene lists, which help cope with database annotation updates as new knowledge is incorporated

    Urinary bladder partial carbon dioxide tension during hemorrhagic shock and reperfusion: an observational study

    INTRODUCTION: Continuous monitoring of bladder partial carbon dioxide tension (PCO(2)) using fibreoptic sensor technology may represent a useful means by which tissue perfusion may be monitored. In addition, its changes might parallel tonometric gut PCO(2). Our hypothesis was that bladder PCO(2), measured using saline tonometry, will be similar to ileal PCO(2 )during ischaemia and reperfusion. METHOD: Six anaesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep were bled to a mean arterial blood pressure of 40 mmHg for 30 min (ischaemia). Then, blood was reinfused and measurements were repeated at 30 and 60 min (reperfusion). We measured systemic and gut oxygen delivery and consumption, lactate and various PCO(2 )gradients (urinary bladder–arterial, ileal–arterial, mixed venous–arterial and mesenteric venous–arterial). Both bladder and ileal PCO(2 )were measured using saline tonometry. RESULTS: After bleeding systemic and intestinal oxygen supply dependency and lactic acidosis ensued, along with elevations in PCO(2 )gradients when compared with baseline values (all values in mmHg; bladder ΔPCO(2 )3 ± 3 versus 12 ± 5, ileal ΔPCO(2 )9 ± 5 versus 29 ± 16, mixed venous–arterial PCO(2 )5 ± 1 versus 13 ± 4, and mesenteric venous–arterial PCO(2 )4 ± 2 versus 14 ± 4; P < 0.05 versus basal for all). After blood reinfusion, PCO(2 )gradients returned to basal values except for bladder ΔPCO(2), which remained at ischaemic levels (13 ± 7 mmHg). CONCLUSION: Tissue and venous hypercapnia are ubiquitous events during low flow states. Tonometric bladder PCO(2 )might be a useful indicator of tissue hypoperfusion. In addition, the observed persistence of bladder hypercapnia after blood reinfusion may identify a territory that is more susceptible to reperfusion injury. The greatest increase in PCO(2 )gradients occurred in gut mucosa. Moreover, the fact that ileal ΔPCO(2 )was greater than the mesenteric venous–arterial PCO(2 )suggests that tonometrically measured PCO(2 )reflects mucosal rather than transmural PCO(2). Ileal ΔPCO(2 )appears to be the more sensitive marker of ischaemia
