Locating Depots for Capacitated Vehicle Routing
We study a location-routing problem in the context of capacitated vehicle
routing. The input is a set of demand locations in a metric space and a fleet
of k vehicles each of capacity Q. The objective is to locate k depots, one for
each vehicle, and compute routes for the vehicles so that all demands are
satisfied and the total cost is minimized. Our main result is a constant-factor
approximation algorithm for this problem. To achieve this result, we reduce to
the k-median-forest problem, which generalizes both k-median and minimum
spanning tree, and which might be of independent interest. We give a
(3+c)-approximation algorithm for k-median-forest, which leads to a
(12+c)-approximation algorithm for the above location-routing problem, for any
constant c>0. The algorithm for k-median-forest is just t-swap local search,
and we prove that it has locality gap 3+2/t; this generalizes the corresponding
result known for k-median. Finally we consider the "non-uniform"
k-median-forest problem which has different cost functions for the MST and
k-median parts. We show that the locality gap for this problem is unbounded
even under multi-swaps, which contrasts with the uniform case. Nevertheless, we
obtain a constant-factor approximation algorithm, using an LP based approach.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
Environment of the submillimeter-bright massive starburst HFLS3 at z∼6.34
We describe the search for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) near the submillimeter-bright starburst galaxy HFLS3 at z = 6.34 and a study on the environment of this massive galaxy during the end of reionization. We performed two independent selections of LBGs on images obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by combining nondetections in bands blueward of the Lyman break and color selection. A total of 10 objects fulfilling the LBG selection criteria at z > 5.5 were selected over the 4.54 and 55.5 arcmin^2 covered by our HST and GTC images, respectively. The photometric redshift, UV luminosity, and star formation rate of these sources were estimated with models of their spectral energy distribution. These z ~ 6 candidates have physical properties and number densities in agreement with previous results. The UV luminosity function at z ~ 6 and a Voronoi tessellation analysis of this field show no strong evidence for an overdensity of relatively bright objects (m_(F105W) < 25.9) associated with HFLS3. However, the overdensity parameter deduced from this field and the surface density of objects cannot exclude definitively the LBG overdensity hypothesis. Moreover, we identified three faint objects at less than 3'' from HFLS3 with color consistent with those expected for z ~ 6 galaxies. Deeper data are needed to confirm their redshifts and to study their association with HFLS3 and the galaxy merger that may be responsible for the massive starburst
Compliance error compensation in robotic-based milling
The paper deals with the problem of compliance errors compensation in
robotic-based milling. Contrary to previous works that assume that the
forces/torques generated by the manufacturing process are constant, the
interaction between the milling tool and the workpiece is modeled in details.
It takes into account the tool geometry, the number of teeth, the feed rate,
the spindle rotation speed and the properties of the material to be processed.
Due to high level of the disturbing forces/torques, the developed compensation
technique is based on the non-linear stiffness model that allows us to modify
the target trajectory taking into account nonlinearities and to avoid the
chattering effect. Illustrative example is presented that deals with
robotic-based milling of aluminum alloy
How to understand Pakistan’s hybrid regime: the importance of a multidimensional continuum
Pakistan has had a chequered democratic history but elections in 2013 marked a second turnover in power, and the first transition in Pakistan’s history from one freely elected government to another. How do we best categorize (and therefore understand) political developments in Pakistan? Is it now safe to categorize it as an electoral democracy or is it still a hybrid case of democracy? Using the Pakistani case as an example, this article argues that hybrid regimes deserve consideration as a separate case (rather than as a diminished sub type of democracy or authoritarianism), but must be categorised along a multidimensional continuum to understand the dynamics of power within the political system
Inertialess multilayer film flow with surfactant: Stability and traveling waves
Multilayer film flow down an inclined plane in the presence of an insoluble surfactant is investigated with particular emphasis on determining flow stability and investigating the possibility of traveling-wave solutions. The investigation is conducted for two or three layers under conditions of Stokes flow and, separately, on the basis of a long-wave assumption. A normal mode linear stability analysis for Stokes flow shows that adding surfactant to one of the film surfaces can destabilize an otherwise stable flow configuration. For the long-wave system, periodic traveling-wave branches are detected and traced, revealing solutions with pulselike solitary waves on each film surface traveling in phase with each other, traveling waves with capillary ridge structures, and solutions with two of the film surfaces almost in contact. Time-periodic traveling-wave solutions are also found. The stability of the traveling waves is determined by solving initial-value problems and by computing eigenvalue spectra. Boundary element simulations for Stokes flow confirm the existence of traveling waves outside the long-wave regime
SST-GATE: A dual mirror telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the world's first open
observatory for very high energy gamma-rays. Around a hundred telescopes of
different sizes will be used to detect the Cherenkov light that results from
gamma-ray induced air showers in the atmosphere. Amongst them, a large number
of Small Size Telescopes (SST), with a diameter of about 4 m, will assure an
unprecedented coverage of the high energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum
(above ~1TeV to beyond 100 TeV) and will open up a new window on the
non-thermal sky. Several concepts for the SST design are currently being
investigated with the aim of combining a large field of view (~9 degrees) with
a good resolution of the shower images, as well as minimizing costs. These
include a Davies-Cotton configuration with a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode
(GAPD) based camera, as pioneered by FACT, and a novel and as yet untested
design based on the Schwarzschild-Couder configuration, which uses a secondary
mirror to reduce the plate-scale and to allow for a wide field of view with a
light-weight camera, e.g. using GAPDs or multi-anode photomultipliers. One
objective of the GATE (Gamma-ray Telescope Elements) programme is to build one
of the first Schwarzschild-Couder prototypes and to evaluate its performance.
The construction of the SST-GATE prototype on the campus of the Paris
Observatory in Meudon is under way. We report on the current status of the
project and provide details of the opto-mechanical design of the prototype, the
development of its control software, and simulations of its expected

A lensed protocluster candidate at identified in JWST observations of the galaxy cluster SMACS0723-7327
According to the current paradigm of galaxy formation, the first galaxies
have been likely formed within large dark matter haloes. The fragmentation of
these massive haloes led to the formation of galaxy protoclusters, which are
usually composed of one to a few bright objects, surrounded by numerous fainter
(and less massive) galaxies. These early structures could have played a major
role in reionising the neutral hydrogen within the first billion years of the
Universe; especially, if their number density is significant.Taking advantage
of the unprecedented sensitivity reached by the \textit{James Webb Space
Telescope (JWST)}, galaxy protoclusters can now be identified and studied in
increasing numbers beyond 6. Characterising their contribution to the
UV photon budget could supply new insights into the reionisation process. We
analyse the first JWST dataset behind SMACS0723-7327 to search for
protoclusters at , combining the available spectroscopic and
photometric data. We then compare our findings with semi-analytical models and
simulations. In addition to two bright galaxies (26.5 AB in F277W),
separated by 11\arcsec and spectroscopically confirmed at
, we identify 6 additional galaxies with similar colors in a
\arcsec radius around these (corresponding to R kpc in
the source plane). Using several methods, we estimate the mass of the dark
matter halo of this protocluster, 3.310M
accounting for magnification, consistent with various predictions. The physical
properties of all protocluster members are also in excellent agreement with
what has been previously found at lower redshifts: star-formation main sequence
and protocluster size. This detection adds to just a few protoclusters
