Wi-Fi Guest Access: A Struggle For Secure Functionality in Academic Environments

The rapid growth in the functionality of Wi-Fi networking in recent years has benefited academic environments. Consistent with their role as centers of innovation academic institutions have an interest in facilitating as much mobile, computer networking functionality as possible to parties of varying levels of affiliation, while also assuring confidentiality and integrity of communications. Providing secure yet functional Wi-Fi access to guests and affiliates in an academic environment presents significant challenges. Academic institutions have taken a wide variety of approaches to this problem. This study presents and analyzes data gathered from semi-structured telephone interviews with employees focused on computer networking and security in academic environments regarding their institutions' approaches toward striking a balance between security and functionality. The results are summarized, conclusions are presented, and solutions to common problems are reviewed. Finally, remaining significant research questions are presented and explored

The Personality Panorama:Conceptualizing Personality Through Big Behavioural Data

Personality psychology has long been grounded in data typologies, particularly in the delineation of behavioural, life outcome, informant-report, and self-report sources of data from one another. Such data typologies are becoming obsolete in the face of new methods, technologies, and data philosophies. In this article, we discuss personality psychology's historical thinking about data, modern data theory's place in personality psychology, and several qualities of big data that urge a rethinking of personality itself. We call for a move away from self-report questionnaires and a reprioritization of the study of behaviour within personality science. With big data and behavioural assessment, we have the potential to witness the confluence of situated, seamlessly interacting psychological processes, forming an inclusive, dynamic, multiangle view of personality. However, big behavioural data come hand in hand with important ethical considerations, and our emerging ability to create a ‘personality panopticon’ requires careful and thoughtful navigation. For our research to improve and thrive in partnership with new technologies, we must not only wield our new tools thoughtfully, but humanely. Through discourse and collaboration with other disciplines and the general public, we can foster mutual growth and ensure that humanity's burgeoning technological capabilities serve, rather than control, the public interest

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis, central retinal artery occlusion and optic neuropathy: A new association

Purpose: To report a patient with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) complicated by optic neuropathy and central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Observations: CRMO is a noninfectious, inflammatory bone disorder. It is thought to be an autoimmune condition related to an imbalance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Retinal vasculitis has been reported in a patient with CRMO but not CRAO or optic neuropathy. Conclusions: We expanded the list of ophthalmic involvement of CRMO to include CRAO and optic neuropathy

The Personality of American Nations: An Exploratory Study

61 pagesSome scholars have presented models of the United States as a set of “nations” with distinct settlement histories and contemporary cultures. We examined personality differences in one such model, that of Colin Woodard, using data from over 75,000 respondents. Four nations were particularly distinct: The Deep South, Left Coast, New Netherland, and the Spanish Caribbean. Differences between nations at the level of the individual person were typically small, but were larger at the level of community, revealing how aggregation can contribute to differences in the lived experience of places in nations such as Yankeedom or Greater Appalachia. We represented effects in a three-dimensional model defined by Authoritarian conventionalism (which differentiated ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ nations) as well as Cognitive resilience and Competitiveness (which differentiated among the Blue nations). Finally, we adjusted Woodard’s model to better fit the data, and found that nations largely maintained their boundaries, with the most drastic changes occurring on the East Coast

Paging Materials to Maintain Quality Library Service During a Two-Year Renovation

Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library’s collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. The paging service was modified three times based on prior experience. Patrons were generally satisfied with the service. The renovation ended in December 2004
