Set Theory or Higher Order Logic to Represent Auction Concepts in Isabelle?
When faced with the question of how to represent properties in a formal proof
system any user has to make design decisions. We have proved three of the
theorems from Maskin's 2004 survey article on Auction Theory using the
Isabelle/HOL system, and we have produced verified code for combinatorial
Vickrey auctions. A fundamental question in this was how to represent some
basic concepts: since set theory is available inside Isabelle/HOL, when
introducing new definitions there is often the issue of balancing the amount of
set-theoretical objects and of objects expressed using entities which are more
typical of higher order logic such as functions or lists. Likewise, a user has
often to answer the question whether to use a constructive or a
non-constructive definition. Such decisions have consequences for the proof
development and the usability of the formalization. For instance, sets are
usually closer to the representation that economists would use and recognize,
while the other objects are closer to the extraction of computational content.
In this paper we give examples of the advantages and disadvantages for these
approaches and their relationships. In addition, we present the corresponding
Isabelle library of definitions and theorems, most prominently those dealing

Interstellar helium in interplanetary space
The velocity distribution function of He(+) in the solar wind at 1 AU is calculated with the assumption that the source is photoionization of a cold (T = 100 K), neutral interstellar wind. If the spiral magnetic field is noise free, the velocity distribution is diffuse and would not produce a peak at 4(E over Q) sub H in an E over Q particle spectrum. If the velocity of the interstellar wind with respect to the sun lies in the ecliptic, a large variation of the He(+) number density with respect to ecliptic longitude is expected
Altered muscarinic and nicotinic receptor densities in cortical and subcortical brain regions in Parkinson's disease
Muscarinic and nicotinic cholinergic receptors and choline acetyltransferase activity were studied in postmortem brain tissue from patients with histopathologically confirmed Parkinson's disease and matched control subjects. Using washed membrane homogenates from the frontal cortex, hippocampus, caudate nucleus, and putamen, saturation analysis of specific receptor binding was performed for the total number of muscarinic receptors with [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate, for muscarinic M1 receptors with [3H]pirenzepine, for muscarinic M2 receptors with [3H]oxotremorine-M, and for nicotinic receptors with (-)-[3H]nicotine. In comparison with control tissues, choline acetyl-transferase activity was reduced in the frontal cortex and hippocampus and unchanged in the caudate nucleus and putamen of parkinsonian patients. In Parkinson's disease the maximal binding site density for [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate was increased in the frontal cortex and unaltered in the hippocampus, caudate nucleus, and putamen. Specific [3H]pirenzepine binding was increased in the frontal cortex, unaltered in the hippocampus, and decreased in the caudate nucleus and putamen. In parkinsonian patients Bmax values for specific [3H]oxotremorine-M binding were reduced in the cortex and unchanged in the hippocampus and striatum compared with controls. Maximal (-)-[3H]nicotine binding was reduced in both the cortex and hippocampus and unaltered in both the caudate nucleus and putamen. Alterations of the equilibrium dissociation constant were not observed for any ligand in any of the brain areas examined. The present results suggest that both the innominatocortical and the septohippocampal cholinergic systems degenerate in Parkinson's disease.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS
Ontology: A Linked Data Hub for Mathematics
In this paper, we present an ontology of mathematical knowledge concepts that
covers a wide range of the fields of mathematics and introduces a balanced
representation between comprehensive and sensible models. We demonstrate the
applications of this representation in information extraction, semantic search,
and education. We argue that the ontology can be a core of future integration
of math-aware data sets in the Web of Data and, therefore, provide mappings

Microplankton species assemblages at the Scripps Pier from March to November 1983 during the 1982-1984 El Nino event
A semiweekly sampling program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography pier was begun in 1983 during an El Nino event. Microplankton data for March to November 1983 show a temporal sequence of species assemblages of the 24 important taxa, with a residence time of 1 to 4 weeks. From March to early September, the assemblages consisted of typical neritic taxa. From mid-September to mid-November, the presence of oceanic warm-wave species was associated with positive temperature anomalies characteristic of the El Nino condition. Brain muscarinic cholinergic receptors in Huntington's disease
Muscarinic cholinergic receptors and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity were studied in postmortem brain tissue from patients with Huntington's disease and matched control subjects. In comparison with controls, reductions in ChAT activity were found in the hippocampus, but not in the temporal cortex in Huntington's disease. Patients with Huntington's disease showed reduced densities of the total number of muscarinic receptors and of M-2 receptors in the hippocampus while the density of M-1 receptors was unaltered. Muscarinic receptor binding was unchanged in the temporal cortex. These results indicate a degeneration in Huntington's disease of the septo-hippocampal cholinergic pathway, but no impairment of the innominato-cortical cholinergic system
The swiss army knife of job submission tools: grid-control
Grid-control is a lightweight and highly portable open source submission tool
that supports virtually all workflows in high energy physics (HEP). Since 2007
it has been used by a sizeable number of HEP analyses to process tasks that
sometimes consist of up 100k jobs. grid-control is built around a powerful
plugin and configuration system, that allows users to easily specify all
aspects of the desired workflow. Job submission to a wide range of local or
remote batch systems or grid middleware is supported. Tasks can be conveniently
specified through the parameter space that will be processed, which can consist
of any number of variables and data sources with complex dependencies on each
other. Dataset information is processed through a configurable pipeline of
dataset filters, partition plugins and partition filters. The partition plugins
can take the number of files, size of the work units, metadata or combinations
thereof into account. All changes to the input datasets or variables are
propagated through the processing pipeline and can transparently trigger
adjustments to the parameter space and the job submission. While the core
functionality is completely experiment independent, integration with the CMS

Isolation of microsatellite loci in the Capricorn silvereye, Zosterops lateralis chlorocephalus (Aves : Zosteropidae)
The Capricorn silvereye (Zosterops lateralis chlorocephalus
) is ideally suited to investigating the genetic basis of body size evolution. We have isolated and characterized a set of microsatellite markers for this species. Seven out of 11 loci were polymorphic. The number of alleles
detected ranged from two to five and observed heterozygosities between 0.12 and 0.67. One locus, ZL49, was found to be sex-linked. This moderate level of diversity is consistent with that expected in an isolated, island population
Observation of interspecies Feshbach resonances in an ultracold Rb-Cs mixture
We report on the observation of interspecies Feshbach resonances in an
ultracold, optically trapped mixture of Rb and Cs atoms. In a magnetic field
range up to 300 G we find 23 interspecies Feshbach resonances in the lowest
spin channel and 2 resonances in a higher channel of the mixture. The
extraordinarily rich Feshbach spectrum suggests the importance of different
partial waves in both the open and closed channels of the scattering problem
along with higher-order coupling mechanisms. Our results provide, on one hand,
fundamental experimental input to characterize the Rb-Cs scattering properties
and, on the other hand, identify possible starting points for the association
