    International Trends and Practices on Sustainability Reporting in Higher Education Institutions

    Sustainability reports are regarded as important tools in offering information about the environmental, social, economic, and institutional performance of an institution, and in demonstrating a commitment to matters related to sustainable development. But even though sustainability reporting has been used by a variety of higher education institutions to date, it is not as widely practiced as it should be. To further investigate this topic, a twofold approach was used: a study focusing on sustainability reporting approaches deployed in a sample of 30 universities across a set of countries; and a survey with a sample of 72 universities from different global regions to assess the extent to which they are deploying sustainability reporting as part of their activities. The scientific value of the paper resides in the fact that it offers a comprehensive overview of the subject matter of sustainability reporting, and how higher education institutions handle it. It also outlines the efforts in developing these documents which may catalyse further progress in this key area

    Self-assembly in solution of a reversible comb-shaped supramolecular polymer

    We report a single step synthesis of a polyisobutene with a bis-urea moiety in the middle of the chain. In low polarity solvents, this polymer self-assembles by hydrogen bonding to form a combshaped polymer with a central hydrogen bonded backbone and polyisobutene arms. The comb backbone can be reversibly broken, and consequently, its length can be tuned by changing the solvent, the concentration or the temperature. Moreover, we have proved that the bulkiness of the side-chains have a strong influence on both the self-assembly pattern and the length of the backbone. Finally, the density of arms can be reduced, by simply mixing with a low molar mass bis-urea

    The New IR FEL Facility at the Fritz-Haber-Institut in Berlin

    A mid-infrared oscillator FEL has been commissioned at the Fritz-Haber-Institut. The accelerator consists of a thermionic gridded gun, a subharmonic buncher and two S-band standing-wave copper structures [1,2]. It provides a final electron energy adjustable from 15 to 50 MeV, low longitudinal (<50 keV-ps) and transverse emittance (<20 π mm-mrad), at more than 200 pC bunch charge with a micro-pulse repetition rate of 1 GHz and a macro-pulse length of up to 15 μs. Regular user operation started in Nov. 2013 with 6 user stations. Pulsed radiation with up to 100 mJ macro-pulse energy at about 0.5% FWHM bandwidth is routinely produced in the wavelength range from 4 to 48 μm. We will describe the FEL design and its performance as determined by IR power, bandwidth, and micro-pulse length measurements. Further, an overview of the new FHI FEL facility and first user results will be given. The latter include, for instance, spectroscopy of bio-molecules (peptides and small proteins) conformer selected or embedded in superfluid helium nano-droplets at 0.4 K, as well as vibrational spectroscopy of mass-selected metal-oxide clusters and protonated water clusters in the gas phase

    Commissioning Status of the Fritz Haber Institute THz FEL

    The THz Free-Electron Laser (FEL) at the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) of the Max Planck Society in Berlin is designed to deliver radiation from 3 to 300 microns using a single-plane-focusing mid-IR undulator and a two-plane-focusing far-IR undulator that acts as a waveguide for the optical mode. A key aspect of the accelerator performance is the low longitudinal emittance, < 50 keV-psec, that is specified to be delivered at 200 pC bunch charge and 50 MeV from a gridded thermionic electron source. We utilize twin accelerating structures separated by a chicane to deliver the required performance over the < 20 - 50 MeV energy range. The first structure operates at near fixed field while the second structure controls the output energy, which, under some conditions, requires running in a decelerating mode. "First Light" is targeted for the centennial of the sponsor in October 2011 and we will describe progress in the commissioning of this device to achieve this goal. Specifically, the measured performance of the accelerated electron beam will be compared to design simulations and the observed matching of the beam to the mid-IR wiggler will be described

    Genomic alterations indicate tumor origin and varied metastatic potential of disseminated cells from prostate-cancer patients

    Disseminated epithelial cells can be isolated from the bone marrow of a far greater fraction of prostate-cancer patients than the fraction of patients who progress to metastatic disease. To provide a better understanding of these cells, we have characterized their genomic alterations. We first present an array comparative genomic hybridization method capable of detecting genomic changes in the small number of disseminated cells (10-20) that can typically be obtained from bone-marrow aspirates of prostate-cancer patients. We show multiple regions of copy-number change, including alterations common in prostate cancer, such as 8p loss, 8q gain, and gain encompassing the androgen-receptor gene on Xq, in the disseminated cell pools from 11 metastatic patients. We found fewer and less striking genomic alterations in the 48 pools of disseminated cells from patients with organ-confined disease. However, we identify changes shared by these samples with their corresponding primary tumors and prostate-cancer alterations reported in the literature, evidence that these cells, like those in advanced disease, are disseminated tumor cells (DTCs). We also demonstrate that DTCs from patients with advanced and localized disease share several abnormalities, including losses containing cell-adhesion genes and alterations reported to associate with progressive disease. These shared alterations might confer the capability to disseminate or establish secondary disease. Overall, the spectrum of genomic deviations is evidence for metastatic capacity in advanced-disease DTCs and variation in that capacity in DTCs from localized disease. Our analysis lays the foundation for elucidation of the relationship between DTC genomic alterations and progressive prostate cancer

    A inovação aberta no processo de internacionalização de empresas: estudo de caso da Brasil Foods

Relações Internacionais.A presente monografia tem como objetivo o estudo do papel da inovação aberta no processo de internacionalização de empresas, a partir da revisão teórica dos conceitos na literatura e de um estudo de caso real de uma empresa brasileira de grande porte: a Brasil Foods. A presente pesquisa possui caráter de pesquisa exploratória. Para desenvolver o objetivo principal, o trabalho apresenta três objetivos específicos, que são: primeiro apresentar o conceito de inovação, seus graus de inserção e destacar a sua relevância no setor empresarial; segundo apresentar o conceito de inovação aberta e de inovação fechada e esclarecer a importância da difusão de informações; e, terceiro, apresentar os aspectos históricos da internacionalização de empresas, introduzindo duas teorias do processo: Modelo de Uppsala e Perspectiva de Networks. Assim, pode-se exibir, portanto, um modelo conceitual às relações entre as atividades de inovação aberta e a internacionalização de empresas em redes, levandose em consideração que a gestão de inovação nas empresas, atualmente, transcende a visão de inovação tecnológica, e, as redes internacionais ganham cada vez mais relevância como vantagem competitiva nas empresas ao atuar em mercados exteriores. Como resultado, concluiu-se que as estratégias de internacionalização de empresas em redes e as estratégias de inovação aberta, quando empregadas juntas, aumentam a velocidade de aprendizagem organizacional da Brasil Foods, acelerando os processos de internacionalização, confirmando que a inovação aberta estimula e intensifica a internacionalização de empresas que trabalham em redes

    First Lasing of the IR FEL at the Fritz-Haber-Institut Berlin

    A new mid-infrared FEL has been commissioned at the Fritz-Haber-Institut in Berlin. The oscillator FEL operates with 15 – 50 MeV electrons from a normal-conducting Sband linac. Calculations of the FEL gain and IR-cavity losses predict that lasing will be possible in the wavelength range from less than 4 to more than 50 μm. First lasing was achieved at a wavelength of 16 μm with an electron energy of 28 MeV. At these conditions, lasing was observed over a cavity length scan range of 100 μm
