Ensemble prediction using a new dataset of ECMWF initial states - OpenEnsemble 1.0
Ensemble prediction is an indispensable tool in modern numerical weather prediction (NWP). Due to its complex data flow, global medium-range ensemble prediction has almost exclusively been carried out by operational weather agencies to date. Thus, it has been very hard for academia to contribute to this important branch of NWP research using realistic weather models. In order to open ensemble prediction research up to the wider research community, we have recreated all 50 + 1 operational IFS ensemble initial states for OpenIFS CY43R3. The dataset (Open Ensemble 1.0) is available for use under a Creative Commons licence and is downloadable from an https server. The dataset covers 1 year (December 2016 to November 2017) twice daily. Downloads in three model resolutions (T(L)159, T(L)399, and T(L)639) are available to cover different research needs. An open-source workflow manager, called OpenEPS, is presented here and used to launch ensemble forecast experiments from the perturbed initial conditions. The deterministic and probabilistic forecast skill of OpenIFS (cycle 40R1) using this new set of initial states is comprehensively evaluated. In addition, we present a case study of Typhoon Damrey from year 2017 to illustrate the new potential of being able to run ensemble forecasts outside of major global weather forecasting centres.Peer reviewe
Dimers, Effective Interactions, and Pauli Blocking Effects in a Bilayer of Cold Fermionic Polar Molecules
We consider a bilayer setup with two parallel planes of cold fermionic polar
molecules when the dipole moments are oriented perpendicular to the planes. The
binding energy of two-body states with one polar molecule in each layer is
determined and compared to various analytic approximation schemes in both
coordinate- and momentum-space. The effective interaction of two bound dimers
is obtained by integrating out the internal dimer bound state wave function and
its robustness under analytical approximations is studied. Furthermore, we
consider the effect of the background of other fermions on the dimer state
through Pauli blocking, and discuss implications for the zero-temperature

A dimensionally continued Poisson summation formula
We generalize the standard Poisson summation formula for lattices so that it
operates on the level of theta series, allowing us to introduce noninteger
dimension parameters (using the dimensionally continued Fourier transform).
When combined with one of the proofs of the Jacobi imaginary transformation of
theta functions that does not use the Poisson summation formula, our proof of
this generalized Poisson summation formula also provides a new proof of the
standard Poisson summation formula for dimensions greater than 2 (with
appropriate hypotheses on the function being summed). In general, our methods
work to establish the (Voronoi) summation formulae associated with functions
satisfying (modular) transformations of the Jacobi imaginary type by means of a
density argument (as opposed to the usual Mellin transform approach). In
particular, we construct a family of generalized theta series from Jacobi theta
functions from which these summation formulae can be obtained. This family
contains several families of modular forms, but is significantly more general
than any of them. Our result also relaxes several of the hypotheses in the
standard statements of these summation formulae. The density result we prove

Measures on Banach Manifolds and Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory
We show how to construct measures on Banach manifolds associated to
supersymmetric quantum field theories. These measures are mathematically
well-defined objects inspired by the formal path integrals appearing in the
physics literature on quantum field theory. We give three concrete examples of
our construction. The first example is a family of measures on a
space of functions on the two-torus, parametrized by a polynomial (the
Wess-Zumino-Landau-Ginzburg model). The second is a family \mu_\cG^{s,t} of
measures on a space \cG of maps from to a Lie group (the
Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model). Finally we study a family
of measures on the product of a space of connection s on the trivial principal
bundle with structure group on a three-dimensional manifold with a
space of \fg-valued three-forms on
We show that these measures are positive, and that the measures
\mu_\cG^{s,t} are Borel probability measures. As an application we show that
formulas arising from expectations in the measures \mu_\cG^{s,1} reproduce
formulas discovered by Frenkel and Zhu in the theory of vertex operator
algebras. We conjecture that a similar computation for the measures
where is a homology three-sphere, will yield the
Casson invariant of Comment: Minor correction
Inclusive Dielectron Production in Ar+KCl Collisions at 1.76 AGeV studied with HADES
Results of the HADES measurement of inclusive dielectron production in Ar+KCl
collisions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.76 AGeV are presented. For the first
time, high mass resolution spectroscopy was performed. The invariant mass
spectrum of dielectrons is compared with predictions of UrQMD and HSD transport

Meson and di-electron production with HADES
The HADES experiment, installed at GSI, Darmstadt, measures di-electron
production in A+A, p/pi+N and p/pi+A collisions. Here, the pi0 and eta Dalitz
decays have been reconstructed in the exclusive p+p reaction at 2.2 GeV to form
a reference cocktail for long-lived di-electron sources. In the C+C reaction at
1 and 2 GeV/u, these long-lived sources have been subtracted from the measured
inclusive e+e- yield to exhibit the signal from the early phase of the
collision. The results suggest that resonances play an important role in dense

Dilepton production in pp and CC collisions with HADES
Dilepton production has been measured with HADES, the "High Acceptance
DiElectron Spectrometer". In pp collisions at 2.2GeV kinetic beam energy,
exclusive eta production and the Dalitz decay eta -> gamma e+e- has been
reconstructed. The electromagnetic form factor is well in agreement with
existing data. In addition, an inclusive e+e- spectrum from the C+C reaction at
