A comprehensive approach to the development of thinking skills
The development of independent and innovative thinking entails much more than merely the acquisition of a series of thinking skills. A comprehensive approach based upon inter-disciplinary cooperation between, among others, the disciplines of philosophy, education and pscychology is needed. In such a comprehensive approach to the development of thinking skills the following factors that have a bearing on the acquisition of thinking skills should be addressed:The cultivation of a positive disposition towards the development of thinking.The creation of conditions conducive to the development of thinking.The cultivation of virtues that will dispose a person towards good thinking.An understanding of what good thinking entails.The teaching and assessment of thinking skills.In this article, these various factors and their bearing on the development of thinking skills are explored. A general theoretical framework for the development of thinking skills is proposed that can and should be translated to specific domains of knowledge or to specific human enterprises
Positive-P and Wigner representations for quantum-optical systems with nonorthogonal modes
We generalize the basic concepts of the positive-P and Wigner representations to unstable quantum-optical systems that are based on nonorthogonal quasimodes. This lays the foundation for a quantum description of such systems, such as, for example an unstable cavity laser. We compare both representations by calculating the tunneling times for an unstable resonator optical parametric oscillator
Quantum statistics of overlapping modes in open resonators
We study the quantum dynamics of optical fields in weakly confining
resonators with overlapping modes. Employing a recently developed quantization
scheme involving a discrete set of resonator modes and continua of external
modes we derive Langevin equations and a master equation for the resonator
modes. Langevin dynamics and the master equation are proved to be equivalent in
the Markovian limit. Our open-resonator dynamics may be used as a starting

Urban eddy covariance measurements reveal significant missing NOx emissions in Central Europe
Nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution is emerging as a primary environmental concern across Europe. While some large European metropolitan areas are already in breach of EU safety limits for NO2, this phenomenon does not seem to be only restricted to large industrialized areas anymore. Many smaller scale populated agglomerations including their surrounding rural areas are seeing frequent NO2 concentration violations. The question of a quantitative understanding of different NOx emission sources is therefore of immanent relevance for climate and air chemistry models as well as air pollution management and health. Here we report simultaneous eddy covariance flux measurements of NOx, CO2, CO and non methane volatile organic compound tracers in a city that might be considered representative for Central Europe and the greater Alpine region. Our data show that NOx fluxes are largely at variance with modelled emission projections, suggesting an appreciable underestimation of the traffic related atmospheric NOx input in Europe, comparable to the weekend-weekday effect, which locally changes ozone production rates by 40%
Tourism policy and destination marketing in developing countries: the chain of influence
Tourism marketers including destination marketing organisations (DMOs) and international tour operators play a pivotal role in destination marketing, especially in creating destination images. These images, apparent in tourist brochures, are designed to influence tourist decision-making and behaviour. This paper proposes the concept of a “chain of influence” in destination marketing and image-making, suggesting that the content of marketing materials is influenced by the priorities of those who design these materials, e.g. tour operators and DMOs. A content analysis of 2,000 pictures from DMO and tour operator brochures revealed synergies and divergence between these marketers. The brochure content was then compared to the South African tourism policy, concluding that the dominant factor in the chain of influence in the South African context is in fact its organic image
Quantum Langevin theory of excess noise
In an earlier work [P. J. Bardroff and S. Stenholm], we have derived a fully
quantum mechanical description of excess noise in strongly damped lasers. This
theory is used here to derive the corresponding quantum Langevin equations.
Taking the semi-classical limit of these we are able to regain the starting
point of Siegman's treatment of excess noise [Phys. Rev. A 39, 1253 (1989)].
Our results essentially constitute a quantum derivation of his theory and allow

Field quantization for open optical cavities
We study the quantum properties of the electromagnetic field in optical
cavities coupled to an arbitrary number of escape channels. We consider both
inhomogeneous dielectric resonators with a scalar dielectric constant
and cavities defined by mirrors of arbitrary shape. Using
the Feshbach projector technique we quantize the field in terms of a set of
resonator and bath modes. We rigorously show that the field Hamiltonian reduces
to the system--and--bath Hamiltonian of quantum optics. The field dynamics is
investigated using the input--output theory of Gardiner and Collet. In the case
of strong coupling to the external radiation field we find spectrally
overlapping resonator modes. The mode dynamics is coupled due to the damping
and noise inflicted by the external field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode
dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an
amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting

Worldwide patterns of bronchodilator responsiveness: results from the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study.

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field.Criteria for a clinically significant bronchodilator response (BDR) are mainly based on studies in patients with obstructive lung diseases. Little is known about the BDR in healthy general populations, and even less about the worldwide patterns. 10 360 adults aged 40 years and older from 14 countries in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia participated in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study. Spirometry was used before and after an inhaled bronchodilator to determine the distribution of the BDR in population-based samples of healthy non-smokers and individuals with airflow obstruction. In 3922 healthy never smokers, the weighted pooled estimate of the 95th percentiles (95% CI) for bronchodilator response were 284 ml (263 to 305) absolute change in forced expiratory volume in 1 s from baseline (ΔFEV(1)); 12.0% (11.2% to 12.8%) change relative to initial value (%ΔFEV(1i)); and 10.0% (9.5% to 10.5%) change relative to predicted value (%ΔFEV(1p)). The corresponding mean changes in forced vital capacity (FVC) were 322 ml (271 to 373) absolute change from baseline (ΔFVC); 10.5% (8.9% to 12.0%) change relative to initial value (ΔFVC(i)); and 9.2% (7.9% to 10.5%) change relative to predicted value (ΔFVC(p)). The proportion who exceeded the above threshold values in the subgroup with spirometrically defined Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage 2 and higher (FEV(1)/FVC <0.7 and FEV(1)% predicted <80%) were 11.1%, 30.8% and 12.9% respectively for the FEV(1)-based thresholds and 22.6%, 28.6% and 22.1% respectively for the FVC-based thresholds. The results provide reference values for bronchodilator responses worldwide that confirm guideline estimates for a clinically significant level of BDR in bronchodilator testing.ALTANA

Efficient unidirectional nanoslit couplers for surface plasmons
Plasmonics is based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes which can be
laterally confined below the diffraction limit, thereby enabling ultracompact
optical components. In order to exploit this potential, the fundamental
bottleneck of poor light-SPP coupling must be overcome. In established SPP
sources (using prism, grating} or nanodefect coupling) incident light is a
source of noise for the SPP, unless the illumination occurs away from the
region of interest, increasing the system size and weakening the SPP intensity.
Back-side illumination of subwavelength apertures in optically thick metal
films eliminates this problem but does not ensure a unique propagation
direction for the SPP. We propose a novel back-side slit-illumination method
based on drilling a periodic array of indentations at one side of the slit. We
demonstrate that the SPP running in the array direction can be suppressed, and
the one propagating in the opposite direction enhanced, providing localized
