Coupled Ito equations of continuous quantum state measurement, and estimation

We discuss a non-linear stochastic master equation that governs the time-evolution of the estimated quantum state. Its differential evolution corresponds to the infinitesimal updates that depend on the time-continuous measurement of the true quantum state. The new stochastic master equation couples to the two standard stochastic differential equations of time-continuous quantum measurement. For the first time, we can prove that the calculated estimate almost always converges to the true state, also at low-efficiency measurements. We show that our single-state theory can be adapted to weak continuous ensemble measurements as well.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX4. For an arbitrary strictly convex function f defined on the non-negative real line we determine the structure of all transformations on the set of density operators which preserve the quantum f-divergence

Srs2 mediates PCNA-SUMO-dependent inhibition of DNA repair synthesis

Completion of DNA replication needs to be ensured even when challenged with fork progression problems or DNA damage. PCNA and its modifications constitute a molecular switch to control distinct repair pathways. In yeast, SUMOylated PCNA (S-PCNA) recruits Srs2 to sites of replication where Srs2 can disrupt Rad51 filaments and prevent homologous recombination (HR). We report here an unexpected additional mechanism by which S-PCNA and Srs2 block the synthesis-dependent extension of a recombination intermediate, thus limiting its potentially hazardous resolution in association with a cross-over. This new Srs2 activity requires the SUMO interaction motif at its C-terminus, but neither its translocase activity nor its interaction with Rad51. Srs2 binding to S-PCNA dissociates PolΎ and Polη from the repair synthesis machinery, thus revealing a novel regulatory mechanism controlling spontaneous genome rearrangements. Our results suggest that cycling cells use the Siz1-dependent SUMOylation of PCNA to limit the extension of repair synthesis during template switch or HR and attenuate reciprocal DNA strand exchanges to maintain genome stability. © 2013 European Molecular Biology Organization

Expanded constellation mapping for enhanced far-end-cross-talk cancellation in G.fast

    No full text
We propose the novel concept of Expanded Constellation Mapping (ECM) for maximising the received signal power, while cancelling the Far-End-Cross-Talk (FEXT) in copper based wireline communications. The goal of ECM is to beneficially map the transmitted symbol vector to its expanded constellation set by carefully exploiting the copper channels’ specific characteristics. To elaborate, ECM is comprised of the control entity and of the match entity, where the former determines how ECM would be applied, while the latter searches for the best mapping of the transmitted symbol vector to the expanded constellation set. Our numerical results demonstrate that with the aid of ECM, more than 25 dB power efficiency gain may be achieved over linear vectoring. Similarly, about 20 dB gain may be achieved over nonlinear vectoring. From an implementation point of view, ECM imposes minimal structural changes on G.fast, whilst exhibiting beneficial reconfigurability and compatibility

Viện Tim Institut du Coeur: Success of a Congenital Heart Disease Center in a Developing Country

ObjectiveThe goal of the Viện Tim Institute du Coeur is to provide high quality cardiac surgical care to the Vietnamese population with 25% of care allocated to the indigent. This article discusses the history; functional and financial implementation of creating a long-term fully sustainable adult and pediatric cardiac surgery center in Southeast Asia in a developing country.MethodsThe Institut du Coeur in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is a fully functional and financially solvent cardiac surgery center that was formed 28 years ago. It was borne from the Alain Carpentier Foundation which oversees its activity and the Centre MĂ©dical International which is an outpatient clinic in Ho Chi Minh City and continues to financially support and oversee the development and future of the Institute. This article details many of the key components to the development of this sustainable program and its evolution.ResultsSince 1996, over 25,000 patients with complicated adult and congenital cardiac disease have been treated at the infirmary with support from the Alain Carpentier Foundation since it was established in 1992. The hospital has also performed surgery and treatment to poor patients across Vietnam with over 6,700 impoverished patients having had free operations with an estimated cost of VND230 billion (US$10.2 million). In addition, 96 surgeons and nearly 500 medical staff have carried out charitable health checks on 12,000 patients in many provinces and cities throughout Vietnam. Through profit sharing with the Centre MĂ©dical International and corporate and personal donations, proceeds are given to the Institute to help perform roughly 25% of all cardiac surgery free of charge to indigent patients in need of congenital heart surgery.ConclusionThe Viện Tim Institute du Coeur has stayed true to its goal of offering high quality cardiac surgical care including congenital heart surgery to a large patient population with one quarter directed to the medically indigent. It also continues to empower and train the health care professionals locally and throughout the country. Creation and growth through this model may help provide a fully functional and financially self-sustaining institution in a developing nation
