    The iron cage of the profession: a critique on closure in the Australian accounting profession

    This paper seeks to contribute to the literature on the process of closure that occurs within the constructs of professions. The discussion in this paper focuses on the professional accounting bodies in Australia and how they have devolved a form of bureaucratic control over the education process through the credentialing of membership and accreditation of accounting degrees. Weber\u27s theory of bureaucracy in conjunction with Closure theory provide the framework upon which this critique is drawn. Implicit in the regulatory role of the accounting bodies is the justification of the practice of accounting and the status of the members of the professional bodies. Once those within the professional associations accept the right of the professional bodies to determine the educational requirements for membership along with the practice of accreditation of curriculum forms the iron cage. The practice of accreditation and credentialing exists in other disciplines such as medicine, engineering and law so that there exists parallels for claiming a legitimate basis for the intervention of the professional accounting bodies

    An Exploration of Automated Narrative Analysis Via Machine Learning

    The accuracy of four machine learning methods in predicting narrative macrostructure scores was compared to scores obtained by human raters utilizing a criterion-referenced progress monitoring rubric. The machine learning methods that were explored covered methods that utilized hand-engineered features, as well as those that learn directly from the raw text. The predictive models were trained on a corpus of 414 narratives from a normative sample of school-aged children (5;0-9;11) who were given a standardized measure of narrative proficiency. Performance was measured using Quadratic Weighted Kappa, a metric of inter-rater reliability. The results indicated that one model, BERT, not only achieved significantly higher scoring accuracy than the other methods, but was consistent with scores obtained by human raters using a valid and reliable rubric. The findings from this study suggest that a machine learning method, specifically, BERT, shows promise as a way to automate the scoring of narrative macrostructure for potential use in clinical practice

    Monitoring Indicators of Scholarly Language (MISL): A Progress-monitoring Instrument for Measuring Narrative Discourse Skills

    The purpose of this study was to assess the basic psychometric properties of a progress-monitoring tool designed to measure narrative discourse skills in school-age children with language impairments (LI). A sample of 109 children with LI between the ages of 5 years 7 months and 9 years 9 months completed the Test of Narrative Language (TNL). The stories told in response to the alien picture prompt were transcribed and scored according to the TNL manual criteria and the criteria established for scoring the progress-monitoring tool, Monitoring Indicators of Scholarly Language (MISL). The MISL total score demonstrated acceptable levels of internal consistency reliability, inter-rater reliability, and construct validity for use as a progress-monitoring tool for specific aspects of narrative proficiency. The MISL holds promise as a tool for tracking growth in narrative language proficiency that may be taught as part of an intervention program to support the Common Core Standards related to literacy

    Quantitative assessment of surface roughness using backscattered ultrasound: The effects of finite surface curvature

    We have previously described a technique to quantify surface fibrillatory changes in osteoarthritic articular cartilage. In that study, the angular distribution of the scattered acoustic field from an insonifying source directly related to the distribution of surface fibrillatory changes. In the current study, we demonstrate a more sensitive method to quantify surface roughness, the effect of global surface curvature in estimating surface roughness and the utility of using focused transducers in circumventing this potential problem for in vivo work. Phantoms composed of acrylic rods with and without sandpaper grit (about 15 to 72 [mu], mean particle size) applied to the surface were scanned. A more robust angular scattering technique to measure the angle dependent data was employed, in which the integrated squared pressure amplitude over a finite time window (mean power) was measured as a function of incident acoustic angle for varying surface roughnesses and radii of curvature. We show that the potential dynamic range for making roughness discriminations diminishes with decreasing radius of curvature of the acrylic rod phantoms using an unfocused transducer. This effect is minimized with use of a focused transducer. Roughness effects are most evident at sufficiently large angles where incoherent scattering dominates. We conclude that the roughness of cylindrically curved surfaces can be quantitatively assessed using a focused ultrasound beam at sufficiently large incident angles, given that the focal spot size is sufficiently smaller than the radius of curvature of the surface.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/31893/1/0000845.pd

    The Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) Survey: The Bright Source Sample

    The Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) Survey is a blind survey of the whole Southern sky at 20 GHz (with follow-up observations at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz) carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) from 2004 to 2007. The Bright Source Sample (BSS) is a complete flux-limited subsample of the AT20G Survey catalogue comprising 320 extragalactic (|b|>1.5 deg) radio sources south of dec = -15 deg with S(20 GHz) > 0.50 Jy. Of these, 218 have near simultaneous observations at 8 and 5 GHz. In this paper we present an analysis of radio spectral properties in total intensity and polarisation, size, optical identifications and redshift distribution of the BSS sources. The analysis of the spectral behaviour shows spectral curvature in most sources with spectral steepening that increases at higher frequencies (the median spectral index \alpha, assuming S\propto \nu^\alpha, decreases from \alpha_{4.8}^{8.6}=0.11 between 4.8 and 8.6 GHz to \alpha_{8.6}^{20}=-0.16 between 8.6 and 20 GHz), even if the sample is dominated by flat spectra sources (85 per cent of the sample has \alpha_{8.6}^{20}>-0.5). The almost simultaneous spectra in total intensity and polarisation allowed us a comparison of the polarised and total intensity spectra: polarised fraction slightly increases with frequency, but the shapes of the spectra have little correlation. Optical identifications provided an estimation of redshift for 186 sources with a median value of 1.20 and 0.13 respectively for QSO and galaxies.Comment: 34 pages, 19 figures, tables of data included, replaced with version published in MNRA

    Quantitative assessment of cartilage surface roughness in osteoarthritis using high frequency ultrasound

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease which affects nearly 50% of people over age 60. Histologic evaluation suggests that fibrillations ~20-150 [mu]m are among the earliest changes in the articular cartilage. We propose a technique to quantify these surface fibrillatory changes in osteoarthritic articular cartilage by considering the angular distribution of the envelope-detected backscattered pressure field from an incident 30-MHz focused transducer. The angular distribution of the scattered acoustic field from an insonifying source will directly relate to the distribution of surface fibrillatory changes. Data are presented for three different grades (400, 500 and 600 grit) of commercially available emory paper and three samples of osteoarthritic femoral head articular cartilage, which were visually assessed as having smooth, intermediate and rough surfaces, respectively. Our preliminary results indicate a probable monotonic relationship between articular cartilage roughening and the degree of broadening in the angle-dependent pressure amplitude. When applied to the emory paper, the technique indicates sensitivity to differences as small as ~5-10 [mu]m in mean roughness.     Multiple novel prostate cancer susceptibility signals identified by fine-mapping of known risk loci among Europeans

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous common prostate cancer (PrCa) susceptibility loci. We have fine-mapped 64 GWAS regions known at the conclusion of the iCOGS study using large-scale genotyping and imputation in 25 723 PrCa cases and 26 274 controls of European ancestry. We detected evidence for multiple independent signals at 16 regions, 12 of which contained additional newly identified significant associations. A single signal comprising a spectrum of correlated variation was observed at 39 regions; 35 of which are now described by a novel more significantly associated lead SNP, while the originally reported variant remained as the lead SNP only in 4 regions. We also confirmed two association signals in Europeans that had been previously reported only in East-Asian GWAS. Based on statistical evidence and linkage disequilibrium (LD) structure, we have curated and narrowed down the list of the most likely candidate causal variants for each region. Functional annotation using data from ENCODE filtered for PrCa cell lines and eQTL analysis demonstrated significant enrichment for overlap with bio-features within this set. By incorporating the novel risk variants identified here alongside the refined data for existing association signals, we estimate that these loci now explain ∼38.9% of the familial relative risk of PrCa, an 8.9% improvement over the previously reported GWAS tag SNPs. This suggests that a significant fraction of the heritability of PrCa may have been hidden during the discovery phase of GWAS, in particular due to the presence of multiple independent signals within the same regio

    Enhanced Neutralizing Antibody Responses to Rhinovirus C and Age-Dependent Patterns of Infection

    Knowledge of prevalent RV types, antibody responses, and populations at risk based on age and genetics may guide the development of vaccines or other novel therapies against this important respiratory pathogen.Longitudinal data from the Childhood Origins of ASThma (COAST) birth cohort study were analyzed to determine relationships between age and RV-C infections. Neutralizing antibodies specific for rhinovirus A (RV-A) and RV-C (3 types each) were determined using a novel polymerase chain reaction-based assay. We pooled data from 14 study cohorts in the United States, Finland, and Australia and used mixed-effects logistic regression to identify factors related to the proportion of RV-C versus RV-A detection.In COAST, RV-A and RV-C infections were similarly common in infancy, while RV-C was detected much less often than RV-A during both respiratory illnesses and scheduled surveillance visits (pRhinovirus C (RV-C) can cause asymptomatic infection and respiratory illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe wheezing.To identify how age and other individual-level factors are associated with susceptibility to RV-C illnesses.</div
