    CP Phases in Supersymmetric Tri-lepton Signals at the Tevatron

    We have analyzed the supersymmetric tri-lepton signals for sparticle searches at the Tevatron in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with general CP phases without generational mixing. The CP phases may affect very strongly the chargino and neutralino mass spectrums and σ(ppˉχ~1χ~20)\sigma(p\bar{p}\to\tilde{\chi}^-_1\tilde{\chi}^0_2) as well as B(χ~1χ~10ν){\cal B}(\tilde{\chi}^-_1\to\tilde{\chi}^0_1\ell^-\nu) and B(χ~20χ~10+){\cal B}(\tilde{\chi}^0_2\to\tilde{\chi}^0_1\ell^+\ell^-). Even under the stringent constraints from the electron electric dipole moment the CP phases can lead to a minimum of the tri-lepton event rate for their non-trivial values.Comment: 10 pages, 3 eps figures, largely revised by including the electron EDM constraint

    Glial activation involvement in neuronal death by Japanese encephalitis virus infection

    Japanese encephalitis is characterized by profound neuronal destruction/dysfunction and concomitant microgliosis/astrogliosis. Although substantial activation of glia is observed in Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV)-induced Japanese encephalitis, the inflammatory responses and consequences of astrocytes and microglial activation after JEV infection are not fully understood. In this study, infection of cultured neurons/glia with JEV caused neuronal death and glial activation, as evidenced by morphological transformation, increased cell proliferation and elevated tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1 beta, IL-6 and RANTES (regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted) production. Replication-competent JEV caused all glial responses and neurotoxicity. However, replication-incompetent JEV lost these abilities, except for the ability to change microglial morphology. The bystander damage caused by activated glia also contributed to JEV-associated neurotoxicity. Microglia underwent morphological changes, increased cell proliferation and elevated TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6 and RANTES expression in response to JEV infection. In contrast, IL-6 and RANTES expression, but no apparent morphological changes, proliferation or TNF-alpha/IL-1 beta expression, was demonstrated in JEV-infected astrocytes. Supernatants of JEV-infected microglia, but not JEV-infected astrocytes, induced glial activation and triggered neuronal death. Antibody neutralization studies revealed that TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta, but not RANTES or IL-6, released by activated microglia appeared to play roles in JEV-associated neurotoxicity. In conclusion, following JEV infection, neuronal death was accompanied by concomitant microgliosis and astrogliosis, and neurotoxic mediators released by JEV-activated microglia, rather than by JEV-activated astrocytes, had the ability to amplify the microglial response and cause neuronal death

    The contents and forms of solid-phase species of radioactive strontium and cesium in Taiwan soils

    This study was to investigate the activities and contents of Cs-137 in the profiles of selected arable and forest soils in Taiwan and various solid-phase species of Sr-85 and Cs-137 in selected arable soils in Taiwan. The gamma (gamma) ray spectra of the collected soil samples and some of the soils amended with Sr-85 and Cs-137 were measured. The data indicate that the arable soils from Sanhsing series, Sanhsing Township and Chuangwei series, Chuangwei Township, Ilan County, and from Tunglochuan series, Pinglin Township, Taipei County shows significantly higher radioactivity of Cs-137 ( ND - 11.0 +/- 0.2 Bq kg(-1)). Furthermore, the radioactivity of Cs-137 in the mountain soils ( 1.24 +/- 0.07 - 42 +/- 1 Bq kg(-1)) from Yuanyang Lake Nature Preserve among Ilan, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu Counties is the highest among the investigated mountain forest soils. This may be mainly attributed to the fact that Ilan County is located in the northeastern part of Taiwan and faces the northeastern and northern seasonal winds with lots of precipitation annually from mid-autumn through mid-spring next year and is receiving greater amount of fallouts yearly. Due to longer reaction period (> 3 y) of Cs-137 with soil components, Cs-137 was mainly in the forms bound to oxides and to organic matter in the soil amended with Cs-137 and in the soil contaminated with Cs-137. On the contrary, due to shorter reaction period (< 60 d) of Sr-85 with soil components, Sr-85 was mainly in exchangeable form and partially in the forms bound to carbonates and oxides in the soils amended with Sr-85

    MSSM Higgs-Boson Production at Hadron Colliders with Explicit CP Violation

    Gluon fusion is the main production mechanism for Higgs bosons with masses up to several hundred GeV in pppp collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We investigate the effects of the CP-violating phases on the fusion process including both the sfermion-loop contributions and the one-loop induced CP-violating scalar-pseudoscalar mixing in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. With a universal trilinear parameter assumed, every physical observable involves only the sum of the phases of the universal trilinear parameter AA and the higgsino mass parameter μ\mu. The phase affects the lightest Higgs-boson production rate significantly through the neutral Higgs-boson mixing and, for the masses around the lightest stop-pair threshold, it also changes the production rate of the heavy Higgs bosons significantly through both the stop and sbottom loops and the neutral Higgs-boson mixing.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures.     Observability of the Lightest MSSM Higgs Boson with Explicit CP Violation via Gluon Fusion at the LHC

    We investigate the observability of the lightest Higgs boson in the gluon-fusion channel at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with explicit CP-violating mixing among three neutral Higgs bosons. The lightest Higgs boson with its mass less than 130 GeV can be detected at the LHC via its gluon-fusion production followed by the decay into two photons. The explicit CP violation can suppress both the production cross section and the two-photon decay branching fraction so significantly that the signal cross section may be more than ten times smaller than the SM signal. This reduction factor can be as small as 1/40 if the lightest Higgs boson mass is 115 GeV and its production cross section at LEP2 is more than 90 % that of the SM case.Comment: 12 pages, 4 eps figures, a reference with two papers adde
