To do so, this master's thesis first presents a study for each of the field, one at a time, before presenting a reflexion on how they can coexist. Are then studied different original art projects containing each of the three field of works, created specifically for this research-creation. Each of those creations concentrates mainly on one of the three fields of work and connect the other two to it in a way that seeks to be as uniform as possible

Aquaculture represents an increasingly important source of food fish worldwide. The aquaculture industry currently produces between 25 and 30% of all seafood for human consumption. In Canada, salmonids (salmon, rainbow trout, arctic char and brook trout) account for the majority of food fish production. Furonculosis involving the bacterium Aeromonas salmonicida is one of the most important infections observed in salmonid farms. An A. salmonicida infection results either in morbidity and mortality with few clinical signs, or in weakened fish with skin ulcers that make them unmarketable for human consumption. The A. salmonicida bacterium uses a number of mechanisms to counteract the natural barrier of the immune system. Bacterial growth is encouraged by an increase in the ambient temperature and in the concentration of organic matter in the water.During recent years, a relationship between therapeutic failures and the development of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has been reported in salmonid farms. This problem is complicated by the fact that only four antibiotics are authorized for the aquaculture industry in Canada. One consequence of this increasing resistance is a renewed interest in alternative therapies and prevention. Bacteriophages (bacterial viruses) may represent one such alternative. In recent decades, interest in bacteriophages as antibacterial agents has been growing in the Americas and in Asia. Some researchers have tried to exploit the potential of bacteriophages to reduce bacterial populations in infections affecting humans, while others have tried to identify uses in veterinary medicine. The overall objective of this research was to explore a new treatment against furonculosis infection based on the use of bacteriophages to inhibit growth of A. salmonicida cells. In this study, we looked at 19 strains of A. salmonicida, resistant to zero, one, two or three antibiotics, and evaluated their sensitivity to 12 bacteriophages. The results showed that the antibiotic-resistant strains were sensitive to as many bacteriophages as were the bacterial strains sensitive to antibiotics. They also showed that all the A. salmonicida strains were sensitive to several bacteriophages and, conversely, that several bacteriophages were effective against all the A. salmonicida strains. It may thus be possible to consider a preventive treatment using bacteriophages to fight against furonculosis in salmonid farms

Recent on-line measurements of individual anode currents at Alouette

    Get PDF
Since early 2014, Alouette has used a system provided by Wireless Industrial Technologies (WIT) to measure individual anode currents on two pots. The system works by measuring the adjacent magnetic field generated by the current for each anode hanger. This paper summarizes initial difficulties and how they have been overcome. Recent current measurements show good agreement with alternative methods for measuring currents (e.g. mV drop along anode hangers). An algorithm has been developed for discerning an imminent anode effect from changes in the measured magnetic fields due to changes in anode currents. Practical reductions of anode effect frequency, compared to cells of reference, have been achieved by using the results of this algorithm to trigger corrective action through the pot control computer. Some additional potential benefits of anode current measurement are described in the paper

Investigation of the Incidence and Geographic Distribution of Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas in Canada: A National Population-Based Study

Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal malignancies with various genetic and environmental risk factors. This study analyzed the epidemiology of sarcomas to gain insight into the incidence and mortality rates of these cancers in Canada, as well as to elucidate their potential environmental risk factors. Data for this study were obtained from le Registre Québécois du Cancer (LRQC) and from the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) for the period from 1992 to 2010. Mortality data were obtained from the Canadian Vital Statistics (CVS) database for the period from 1992 to 2010 using the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, ICD-O-3, ICD-9, or ICD-10 codes, for all subtypes of sarcomas. We found that the overall sarcoma incidence in Canada decreased during the study period. However, there were select subtypes with increasing incidence. Peripherally located sarcomas were found to have lower mortality rates compared to axially located sarcomas, as expected. Clustering of Kaposi sarcoma cases in self-identified LGBTQ+ communities and in postal codes with a higher proportion of African-Canadian and Hispanic populations was observed. Forward Sortation Area (FSA) postal codes with a lower socioeconomic status also had higher Kaposi sarcoma incidence rates

Preventive treatment of anode effects using on-line individual anode current monitoring

Anode effects (AE) are considered a nuisance for aluminium production due to the numerous negative impacts that they generate in an electrolysis cell. Previously, great efforts have been deployed to mini-mize the occurrence of this event. Using online anode current monitoring, Alouette introduced an algorithm to detect abnormalities prior to an AE, allowing sufficient time to apply a corrective action before its occurrence. Several sets of strategies were tested to evaluate the best approach to correct the situation without generating addition-al problems in the cells. Finally, individual anode currents measurements were connected to the cell control system of two pots to automatically launch preventive treatment of AE. A decrease in the total number of anode effects along with an increased cell stability is noticeable. Other indicators, such as anodic incidents, alumina dosage and metal purity were also compared to make sure that no deterioration in the cell conditions occurred over time
