A National Portrait of Domestic Violence Courts
A growing number of criminal courts nationwide handle domestic violence cases on separate calendars, termed domestic violence courts. There are now 208 confirmed domestic violence courts across the U.S. (Center for Court Innovation 2009). More than 150 similar projects have been established internationally. Some domestic violence courts emerged in the context of the broader "problem-solving court" movement and share characteristics with other specialized courts, such as separate dockets and specially trained judges. However, the origins of domestic violence courts are also distinct, growing out of the increased attention afforded domestic violence matters by the justice system over the past 30 years. With funding from the National Institute of Justice, this study explores how criminal domestic violence courts have evolved, their rationale, and how their operations vary across the U.S. This study does not test whether domestic violence courts reduce recidivism, protect victims, or achieve other specific effects -- although we provide a thorough literature review on these points. Rather, our aim is to present a comprehensive national portrait of the field as it exists today, laying the groundwork for future information exchange and research
Walls and boundaries: a reflection on the rebirth of the idea of limit
This article reflects on the current trend towards the proliferation of boundaries and walls. The phenomenon which stands out both inside and outside the territory of the European Union has a truly global importance. The hypothesis that we propose attributes this tendency to the affirmation of a second phase of globalization characterized by a new need for spatialization. The transformation of the boundary line to the place of governamental practices responds to its function as a block of migratory flows, an incessant process of reaction to social inequality which now extends to the transnational level. Law and lawyers have to interpret and govern these complex phenomena

Islet transplantation as a clinical tool: present state and future perspectives
Islet transplant is an innovative treatment for type 1 diabetic patients, which still lies between experimental and approved transplant therapy. Islet cells are seeded in a non-physiological territory where an uncertain fraction will be able to adapt and survive. Thus, the challenge lies in improving the whole procedure, employing the tools of cell biology, immunology and laboratory techniques, in order to reach the results obtained with whole organ transplant. This review describes the procedure, its progress to the present methodology and clinical results obtained. Future perspectives of islet transplantation in the light of recent biotechnological advances are also focused
Identification of Levothyroxine Antichagasic Activity through Computer-Aided Drug Repurposing
Cruzipain (Cz) is the major cysteine protease of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, etiological agent of Chagas disease. A conformation-independent classifier capable of identifying Cz inhibitors was derived from a 163-compound dataset and later applied in a virtual screening campaign on the DrugBank database, which compiles FDA-approved and investigational drugs. 54 approved drugs were selected as candidates, 3 of which were acquired and tested on Cz and T. cruzi epimastigotes proliferation. Among them, levothyroxine, traditionally used in hormone replacement therapy in patients with hypothyroidism, showed dosedependent inhibition of Cz and antiproliferative activity on the parasite.Fil: Bellera, Carolina Leticia.
