Increases in the size, complexity, and life requirements of satellites and space vehicles have put increasing demands on the lubrication requirements for trouble-free service. Since the development costs of large systems are high, long lives with minimum maintenance are dictated. The Space Station represents the latest level of size and complexity in satellite development; it will be nearly 100 meters in major dimensions and will have a life requirement of thirty years. It will have numerous mechanisms critical to its success, some of which will be exposed to the space environment. Designing long-life lubrication systems and choosing appropriate lubricants for these systems will be necessary for their meeting the requirements and for avoiding failures with associated dependent mechanisms. The purpose of this program was to identify the various critical mechanisms and review their designs during the overall design and development stage so that problem areas could be avoided or minimized prior to the fabrication of hardware. The specific objectives were fourfold: (1) to perform a tribology survey of the Space Station for the purpose of documenting each wear point as to materials involved, environmental conditions, and operating characteristics; (2) to review each wear point (point of relative motion) as to the lubrication used and substrate materials selected in the context of its operating characteristics and the environmental conditions imposed; (3) to make recommendations for improvement in areas where the lubricant chosen and/or where the substrate (materials of the wear couple) are not considered optimum for the application; and (4) to make or recommend simulated or full scale tests in tribological areas where the state-of-the-art is being advanced, in areas where new designs are obviously being employed and a critical review would indicate that problems are a strong possibility, and/or where excessive wear, a malfunction, or excessive leakage would create fluid systems problems or contamination of exposed optical equipment

International audienceMitigating anthropogenic methane emissions is one of the available tools for reaching the near term objectives of the Paris Agreement. Characterizing the isotopic signature of the methane plumes emitted by these sources is needed to improve the quantification of methane sources at the regional scale. Urbanized and industrialized regions such as the Paris megacity are key places to better characterize anthropogenic methane sources. In this study, we present the results of the first mobile surveys in the Paris region, assessing methane point sources from 10 landfills (which in the regional inventory are the main emission sector of methane in the region), 5 gas storage sites (supplying Paris) and 1 waste water treatment (WWT) facility (Europe’s largest, second worldwide). Local atmospheric methane concentration (or mixing ratio) enhancements in the source plumes were quantified and their d13C in CH4 (further noted d13CH4) signature characterized. Among the 10 landfills sampled, at 6 of them we detected atmospheric methane local enhancements ranging from 0.8 to 8.5 parts per million (ppm) with d13CH4 signatures between -63.7 ± 0.3 permils (‰) to - 58.2 ± 0.3 ‰. Among the 5 gas storage sites surveyed, we could observe that 3 of them were leaking methane with local methane concentration enhancements ranging from 0.8 to 8.1 ppm and d13CH4 signatures spanning from -43.4 ± 0.5 ‰ to -33.8 ± 0.4 ‰. Dutch gas with a d13CH4 signature of -33.8 ± 0.4 ‰ (typical of thermogenic gas) was also likely identified. The WWT site emitted local methane enhancements up to 4.0 ppm. For this site, two d13CH4 signatures were determined as -51.9 ± 0.2 ‰ and -55.3 ± 0.1 ‰, typical of a biogenic origin. About forty methane plumes were also detected in the Paris city, leading to local concentration enhancements whose origin was in two cases interpreted as natural gas leaks thanks to their isotopic composition. However, such enhancements were much less common than in cities of North America. More isotopic surveys are needed to discriminate whether such urban methane enhancements are outcoming from gas line leaks and sewer network emanations. Furthermore, our results lead us to the conclusion that the regional emissions inventory could underestimate methane emissions from the WWT sector. Further campaigns are needed to assess the variability and seasonality of the sources and of their isotopic signature, and to estimate their emissions using methods independent of the inventory

Bingham Dai, Adolf Storfer, and the tentative beginnings of psychoanalytic culture in China, 1935-1941.

This paper looks at the work of two figures who, while marginal to theoretical developments within the history of psychoanalysis, each briefly played an important role in the dissemination of analytical ideas in China, contributing to an early psychoanalytic culture there. Bingham Dai, a native of China, while studying for a PhD in sociology at Chicago, received instruction from Harry Stack Sullivan and a psychoanalytic training under Karen Horney's supervision. However, the neo-Freudian outlook with which this experience imbued him had its roots in an earlier encounter with his experiments in personality education first conducted on students in a Tientsin high school, and later in Shantung under the direction of the conservative Confucian scholar and reformer, Liang Shu Ming. These experiences convinced him that a less orthodox psychoanalytic perspective was what Chinese patients with psychological problems required. He returned in 1935 to teach medical psychology to doctors at Peking Union Medical College, taking a few into analysis and treating some patients. However, the Sino-Japanese war brought these activities to a close and he left in 1939, just a few months after the former Freud publisher and Viennese émigré, Adolf Storfer, arrived. Storfer set about publishing "Gelbe Post," a German language periodical replete with articles on psychoanalysis, linguistics and Chinese culture. But limited finances, severe competition from a rival publisher, plus his own ill health, forced him to abandon this in spite of the support offered him through the many contributors in the international psychoanalytic community whose articles he published. The paper concludes by considering the relative historiographic fate of the men upon whom subsequent scholarship has been very unevenly focused.published_or_final_versio

Effects of Monovalent and Divalent Cations on Ca2+ Fluxes Across Chromaffin Secretory Membrane Vesicles

Abstract: Bovine chromaffin secretory vesicle ghosts loaded with Na+ were found to take up Ca2+ when incubated in K+ media or in sucrose media containing micromolar concentrations of free Ca2+. Li+- or choline+loaded ghosts did not take up Ca2+. The Ca2+ accumulated by Na+-loaded ghosts could be released by the Ca2+ ionophore A23187, but not by EGTA. Ca2+ uptake was inhibited by external Sr2+, Na +, Li +, or choline +. All the 45Ca2+ accumulated by Na+-dependent Ca2+ uptake could be released by external Na +, indicating that both Ca2+ influx and efflux occur in a Na+-dependent manner. Na + -dependent Ca2+ uptake and release were only slightly inhibited by Mg2+. In the presence of the Na+ ionophore Monensin the Ca2+ uptake by Na +-loaded ghosts was reduced. Ca2+ sequestered by the Na+-dependent mechanism could also be released by external Ca2+ or Sr2+ but not by Mg2+, indicating the presence of a Ca2+/Ca2+ exchange activity in secretory membrane vesicles. This Ca2+/Ca2+ exchange system is inhibited by Mg2+, but not by Sr2+. The Na + -dependent Ca2+ uptake system in the presence of Mg2+ is a saturable process with an apparent Km of 0.28 μM and a Vmax= 14.5 nmol min−1 mg protein−1. Ruthenium red inhibited neither the Na+/Ca2+ nor the Ca2+/Ca2+ exchange, even at high concentrations

Liver regeneration in dogs: Morphologic and chemical changes

Forty-four percent and 72% hepatectomy were carried out in dogs and the animals were sacrificed for biochemical and pathologic studies from 0.5 to 6 days later. Compensatory hypertrophy and hyperplasia ("regeneration") were evident within 1 day, reached a maximum in 3 days, and were almost complete by 6 days. Coincident with the histologic events of regeneration were decreases in responsiveness of receptor adenyl cyclase to glucagon stimulation, increases of cyclic AMP, inconsistent changes in plasma insulin, and increases in plasma glucagon. These studies have standardized hepatic resection in dogs and they have focused attention upon some possible mechanisms that will require further study. © 1978 Academic Press, Inc. In this paper we present the observational campaign carried out at ESO NTT and VLT in April and May 2006 to investigate the nature and the structure of the Near Earth Object (144898) 2004 VD17. In spite of a great quantity of dynamical information, according to which it will have a close approach with the Earth in the next century, the physical properties of this asteroid are largely unknown. We performed visible and near--infrared photometry and spectroscopy, as well as polarimetric observations. Polarimetric and spectroscopic data allowed us to classify 2004 VD17 as an E-type asteroid. A good agreement was also found with the spectrum of the aubrite meteorite Mayo Belwa. On the basis of the polarimetric albedo (p_v=0.45) and of photometric data, we estimated a diameter of about 320 m and a rotational period of about 2 hours. The analysis of the results obtained by our complete survey have shown that (144898) 2004 VD17 is a peculiar NEO, since it is close to the breakup limits for fast rotator asteroids, as defined by Pravec and Harris (2000). These results suggest that a more robust structure must be expected, as a fractured monolith or a rubble pile in a "strength regime" (Holsapple 2002).Comment: 32 pages, 7 figure, paper accepted for publication in Icaru

Effect of antiandrogen flutamide on measures of hepatic regeneration in rats

Male rat liver undergoes a process of demasculinization during hepatic regeneration following partial hepatectomy. The possibility that antiandrogens might potentiate this demasculinization process and in so doing augment the hepatic regenerative response was investigated. Adult male Wistar rats were treated with the antiandrogen flutamide (2 mg/rat/day or 5 mg/rat/day subcutaneously) or vehicle for three days prior to and daily after a 70% partial hepatectomy. At various times after hepatectomy, the liver remnants were removed and weighed. Rates of DNA and polyamine synthesis were assessed by measuring thymidine kinase and ornithine decarboxylase activities, respectively. Hepatic estrogen receptor status and the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase, an androgen-sensitive protein, were measured. Prior to surgery, the administration of 5 mg/day flutamide reduced the hepatic cytosolic androgen receptor activity by 98% and hepatic cytosolic estrogen receptor content by 92% compared to that present in vehicle-treated controls. After hepatectomy, however, all differences in sex hormone receptor activity between the treatment groups were abolished. The rate of liver growth after partial hepatectomy in the three groups was identical. Moreover, hepatectomy-induced increases in ornithine decarboxylase activity and thymidine kinase activity were comparable. These data demonstrate that, although flutamide administration initially alters the sex hormone receptor status of the liver, these affects have no effect on the hepatic regenerative response following a partial hepatectomy. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation
