Black Hole Hair Removal: Non-linear Analysis
BMPV black holes in flat transverse space and in Taub-NUT space have
identical near horizon geometries but different microscopic degeneracies. It
has been proposed that this difference can be accounted for by different
contribution to the degeneracies of these black holes from hair modes, --
degrees of freedom living outside the horizon. In this paper we explicitly
construct the hair modes of these two black holes as finite bosonic and
fermionic deformations of the black hole solution satisfying the full
non-linear equations of motion of supergravity and preserving the supersymmetry
of the original solutions. Special care is taken to ensure that these solutions
do not have any curvature singularity at the future horizon when viewed as the
full ten dimensional geometry. We show that after removing the contribution due
to the hair degrees of freedom from the microscopic partition function, the
partition functions of the two black holes agree.Comment: 40 pages, LaTe
Cellular interactions with polystyrene nanoplastics-The role of particle size and protein corona.
Plastic waste is ubiquitously spread across the world and its smaller analogs-microplastics and nanoplastics-raise particular health concerns. While biological impacts of microplastics and nanoplastics have been actively studied, the chemical and biological bases for the adverse effects are sought after. This work explores contributory factors by combining results from in vitro and model mammalian membrane experimentation to assess the outcome of cell/nanoplastic interactions in molecular detail, inspecting the individual contribution of nanoplastics and different types of protein coronae. The in vitro study showed mild cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics, with no clear trend based on nanoplastic size (20 and 200 nm) or surface charge. In contrast, a nanoplastic size-dependency on bilayer disruption was observed in the model system. This suggests that membrane disruption resulting from direct interaction with PS nanoplastics has little correlation with cytotoxicity. Furthermore, the level of bilayer disruption was found to be limited to the hydrophilic headgroup, indicating that transmembrane diffusion was an unlikely pathway for cellular uptake-endocytosis is the viable mechanism. In rare cases, small PS nanoplastics (20 nm) were found in the vicinity of chromosomes without a nuclear membrane surrounding them; however, this was not observed for larger PS nanoplastics (200 nm). We hypothesize that the nanoplastics can interact with chromosomes prior to nuclear membrane formation. Overall, precoating PS particles with protein coronae reduced the cytotoxicity, irrespective of the corona type. When comparing the two types, the extent of reduction was more apparent with soft than hard corona
Minimal flavour violation extensions of the seesaw
We analyze the most natural formulations of the minimal lepton flavour
violation hypothesis compatible with a type-I seesaw structure with three heavy
singlet neutrinos N, and satisfying the requirement of being predictive, in the
sense that all LFV effects can be expressed in terms of low energy observables.
We find a new interesting realization based on the flavour group (being and respectively the SU(2) singlet and
doublet leptons). An intriguing feature of this realization is that, in the
normal hierarchy scenario for neutrino masses, it allows for sizeable
enhancements of transitions with respect to LFV processes involving
the lepton. We also discuss how the symmetries of the type-I seesaw
allow for a strong suppression of the N mass scale with respect to the scale of
lepton number breaking, without implying a similar suppression for possible
mechanisms of N productionComment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Acceptability and usability of smartphone-based brainwave entrainment technology used by individuals with chronic pain in a home setting
Background:
Brainwave entrainment (BWE) using rhythmic visual or auditory stimulation has many potential clinical applications, including the management of chronic pain, where there is a pressing need for novel, safe and effective treatments. The aim of this study was to gain qualitative feedback on the acceptability and usability of a novel BWE smartphone application, to ensure it meets the needs and wishes of end users.
Methods:
Fifteen participants with chronic pain used the application at home for 4 weeks. Semi-structured telephone interviews were then carried out. A template analysis approach was used to interpret the findings, with an initial coding template structured around the constructs of a theoretical framework for assessing acceptability of healthcare interventions. Structured data analysis generated a final modified coding structure, capturing themes generated across participants’ accounts.
Results:
The four main themes were ‘approach to trying out the app: affective attitude and ethicality’, ‘perceived effectiveness’, ‘opportunity costs and burden’ and ‘intervention coherence and self-efficacy’. All participants were willing to engage with the technology and welcomed it as an alternative approach to medications. Participants appreciated the simplicity of design and the ability to choose between visual or auditory stimulation. All the participants felt confident in using the application.
Conclusion:
The findings demonstrate preliminary support for the acceptability and usability of the BWE application. This is the first qualitative study of BWE to systematically assess these issues
The white matter is a pro-differentiative niche for glioblastoma
Glioblastomas are hierarchically organised tumours driven by glioma stem cells that retain partial differentiation potential. Glioma stem cells are maintained in specialised microenvironments, but whether, or how, they undergo lineage progression outside of these niches remains unclear. Here we identify the white matter as a differentiative niche for glioblastomas with oligodendrocyte lineage competency. Tumour cells in contact with white matter acquire pre-oligodendrocyte fate, resulting in decreased proliferation and invasion. Differentiation is a response to white matter injury, which is caused by tumour infiltration itself in a tumoursuppressive feedback loop. Mechanistically, tumour cell differentiation is driven by selective white matter upregulation of SOX10, a master regulator of normal oligodendrogenesis. SOX10 overexpression or treatment with myelination-promoting agents that upregulate endogenous SOX10, mimic this response, leading to niche-independent pre-oligodendrocyte differentiation and tumour suppression in vivo. Thus, glioblastoma recapitulates an injury response and exploiting this latent programme may offer treatment opportunities for a subset of patients
Extensive degeneracy, Coulomb phase and magnetic monopoles in an artificial realization of the square ice model
Artificial spin ice systems have been introduced as a possible mean to
investigate frustration effects in a well-controlled manner by fabricating
lithographically-patterned two-dimensional arrangements of interacting magnetic
nanostructures. This approach offers the opportunity to visualize
unconventional states of matter, directly in real space, and triggered a wealth
of studies at the frontier between nanomagnetism, statistical thermodynamics
and condensed matter physics. Despite the strong efforts made these last ten
years to provide an artificial realization of the celebrated square ice model,
no simple geometry based on arrays of nanomagnets succeeded to capture the
macroscopically degenerate ground state manifold of the corresponding model.
Instead, in all works reported so far, square lattices of nanomagnets are
characterized by a magnetically ordered ground state consisting of local
flux-closure configurations with alternating chirality. Here, we show
experimentally and theoretically, that all the characteristics of the square
ice model can be observed if the artificial square lattice is properly
designed. The spin configurations we image after demagnetizing our arrays
reveal unambiguous signatures of an algebraic spin liquid state characterized
by the presence of pinch points in the associated magnetic structure factor.
Local excitations, i.e. classical analogues of magnetic monopoles, are found to
be free to evolve in a massively degenerated, divergence-free vacuum. We thus
provide the first lab-on-chip platform allowing the investigation of collective
phenomena, including Coulomb phases and ice-like physics.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure
How acceptable are antiretrovirals for the prevention of sexually transmitted HIV? A review of research on the acceptability of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment as prevention
Recent research has demonstrated how antiretrovirals (ARVs) could be effective in the prevention of sexually transmitted HIV. We review research on the acceptability of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention (TasP) for HIV prevention amongst potential users. We consider with whom, where and in what context this research has been conducted, how acceptability has been approached, and what research gaps remain. Findings from 33 studies show a lack of TasP research, PrEP studies which have focused largely on men who have sex with men (MSM) in a US context, and varied measures of acceptability. In order to identify when, where and for whom PrEP and TasP would be most appropriate and effective, research is needed in five areas: acceptability of TasP to people living with HIV; motivation for PrEP use and adherence; current perceptions and management of risk; the impact of broader social and structural factors; and consistent definition and operationalisation of acceptability which moves beyond adherence
Bayesian Point Set Registration
Point set registration involves identifying a smooth invertible
transformation between corresponding points in two point sets, one of which may
be smaller than the other and possibly corrupted by observation noise. This
problem is traditionally decomposed into two separate optimization problems:
(i) assignment or correspondence, and (ii) identification of the optimal
transformation between the ordered point sets. In this work, we propose an
approach solving both problems simultaneously. In particular, a coherent
Bayesian formulation of the problem results in a marginal posterior
distribution on the transformation, which is explored within a Markov chain
Monte Carlo scheme. Motivated by Atomic Probe Tomography (APT), in the context
of structure inference for high entropy alloys (HEA), we focus on the
registration of noisy sparse observations of rigid transformations of a known
reference configuration.Lastly, we test our method on synthetic data sets.Comment: 15 pages, 20 figure
Obstructive sleep apnea in Treacher Collins syndrome
The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) among the Norwegian population with Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS). A secondary aim was to establish whether TCS phenotype severity is associated with OSAS severity. A prospective case study design was used. Individuals who were 5 years old and above with a known diagnosis of TCS in Norway were invited to participate in a study. The study included genetic testing, medical and dental examinations and polysomnography. All participants demonstrated disturbed respiration during sleep; 18/19 met the diagnostic criteria for OSAS. Subjectively evaluated snoring was not a reliable predictor of OSAS. We found no significant association between TCS phenotype severity and the severity of OSAS. OSAS is common in TCS, but there is no association with the phenotype severity. Individuals diagnosed with TCS must undergo sleep studies to identify the presence of OSAS
