Debt, the migrant and the refugee: Lampedusa on stage

This article discusses Anders Lustgarten’s play, Lampedusa. The play is ostensibly about refugees and the Mediterranean crossing, as well as addressing EU migration, debt, and austerity. The article develops the idea of the debtor in neo-liberal economics suggesting that the refugee is required to become a debtor on settlement. While Lustgarten’s representation of refugees and migrants is not fully realised in that they are not enabled agents in the script or in performance, the article concludes that although the play is thus flawed, its characters’ search for moral restitution creates a thoughtful insight into British society and grounds for hope

Loin de répondre à une logique d’extension des marchés, la privatisation des « biens publics » (santé, formation, éducation, savoir, patrimoine naturel...) est l’enjeu d’une appropriation monopoliste des droits de propriété intellectuelle sur les savoirs. Face à un capital globalisé, détourné des fonctions de production et devenu gestionnaire de portefeuilles de titre de propriété intellectuelle, les logiciels libres, fondés sur le principe de la libre circulation des connaissances, constituent une expérience de libération des forces de la coopération, l’invention à l’intérieur même du marché et de l’État, mais comme forces qui lui résistent et qui ne peuvent être subsumées par le capital qu’au prix de la perte de leur puissance créatrice. Le produit de la coopération, l’invention, ne peut être reconduit ni à la notion de bien privé, ni à celle de bien public : il impose la construction d’un concept de « bien commun », une manière nouvelle de penser la propriété intellectuelle, et la propriété tout court.Far from responding to a process of the extension of the market, the privatisation of « public goods » (health, training, education, knowledge, natural heritage…) is the stake in a monopolistic appropriation of intellectual property rights over knowledge. In the face of a globalised capital, diverted from functions related to production to the management of portfolios of intellectual property deeds, free software – based on the principle of the free circulation of knowledge – constitutes an experience of the liberation of forces of cooperation and invention within the market and the State themselves, but as forces which resist and can only be subsumed by capital at the cost of a loss of the creative power. The product of cooperation, invention, cannot be referred back to the notion of private good, not that of public good: it implies the construction of a concept of « common good », a new way of thinking about intellectual property, and property in general
