Career Choice: A Case Study of College Students Shifting Career Paths

    Get PDF
This study aimed to determine the causes, impacts, and varying perspectives of how two years of education can alter a person's ambitions. A qualitative research design, specifically the case study approach was used in this study. It focused on why the participants enrolled in a college program that was not aligned with their SHS Strand. The responses are subsequently transcribed and themes are identified. Students whose college courses do not correspond to their Senior High School strands have questioned their previous strand selection. This is due to difficulties they encountered as a result of the misalignment. According to the general findings, one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a career is one's interest. It was also evident within the data presented that the finances and practicality of the predetermined college courses that the students chose were weighed into their decision-making. It also shows that the majority of the participants agreed that their families have an impact on their career choices. The study also discovered that doing things that are not one's passion in the first place can be difficult, but it can help people challenge their abilities. The study concludes that indeed, pre-coaching strategies and guidance provided by schools play a large factor in students' awareness of their strengths and weaknesses. Also, setting goals may make the desired changes more difficult; however, the participants rediscovered their inclination and satisfaction with what they have pursued now, which motivated them to continue

Comparative study on the use of specific and heterologous microsatellite primers in the stingless bees Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury (Hymenoptera, Apidae)

Due to their high degree of polymorphism, microsatellites are considered useful tools for studying population genetics. Nevertheless, studies of genetic diversity in stingless bees by means of these primers have revealed a low level of polymorphism, possibly the consequence of the heterologous primers used, since in most cases these were not specifically designed for the species under consideration. Herein we compared the number of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, as well as observed heterozygosity in Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury populations, using specific and heterologous primers. The use of specific primers placed in evidence the greater frequency of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, besides an expressive increase in observed heterozygosity in M. rufiventris and M. mondury, thereby reinforcing the idea that populational studies should be undertaken by preferably using species-specific microsatellite primers

A platform for inpatient safety management based on IoT technology

    Get PDF
There is a need to integrate advancements in biomedical, information, and communication technologies with care processes within the framework of the inpatient safety program to support effective risk management of adverse events occurring in the hospital environment and to improve inpatient safety. In this respect, this work presents the development of a software platform using the Scrum methodology and the integrated technology of the Internet of Things for monitoring and managing inpatient safety. A modular solution is developed under a hexagonal architecture, using PHP as the backend language through the Laravel framework. A MySQL database was used for the data layer, and Vue.js was used for the user interface. This work implemented an RFID-based nurse call system using Internet of Things (IoT) concepts. The system enables nurses to respond to each inpatient within a given time limit and without the inpatient or a family member having to approach the nursing station. The system also provides reports and indicators that help evaluate the quality of inpatient care and helps to take measures to improve inpatient safety during care. In addition, diet management is integrated to reduce the occurrence of adverse events. A LoRa and Wi-Fi-based IoT network was implemented using a LoRa transceiver and the ESP32 MCU, chosen for its low power consumption, low cost, and wide availability. Bidirectional communication between hardware and software is handled through an MQTT Broker. The system integrates temperature and humidity sensors and smoke sensors, among others

Transcript levels of ten caste-related genes in adult diploid males of Melipona quadrifasciata (Hymenoptera, Apidae) - A comparison with haploid males, queens and workers

In Hymenoptera, homozygosity at the sex locus results in the production of diploid males. In social species, these pose a double burden by having low fitness and drawing resources normally spent for increasing the work force of a colony. Yet, diploid males are of academic interest as they can elucidate effects of ploidy (normal males are haploid, whereas the female castes, the queens and workers, are diploid) on morphology and life history. Herein we investigated expression levels of ten caste-related genes in the stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata, comparing newly emerged and 5-day-old diploid males with haploid males, queens and workers. In diploid males, transcript levels for dunce and paramyosin were increased during the first five days of adult life, while those for diacylglycerol kinase and the transcriptional co-repressor groucho diminished. Two general trends were apparent, (i) gene expression patterns in diploid males were overall more similar to haploid ones and workers than to queens, and (ii) in queens and workers, more genes were up-regulated after emergence until day five, whereas in diploid and especially so in haploid males more genes were down-regulated. This difference between the sexes may be related to longevity, which is much longer in females than in males

Process evaluation of the Bridging the Age Gap in Breast Cancer decision support intervention cluster randomized trial [abstract only]

Aims/Objectives: Shared decision making on the choice of treatment for older women with breast cancer involves many factors. Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is recognised to have a role in older patients with cancer, but how this should be utilised is still debatable. A pilot study involving older women newly diagnosed with early operable primary breast cancer was conducted aiming to explore the potential value of CGA. Methods: Decision of primary treatment followed consultation with the clinical team and was not guided by any aspect of this study. CGA, using a validated cancer-specific tool from our collaborator, A Hurria, was conducted within 6 weeks after diagnosis, regardless of date of surgery/first treatment. A total of 178 female patients aged ≥70 years with a new diagnosis of early (stage 1 or 2; cT0-2, N0-1, M0) operable primary breast cancer proven histologically, were thus far recruited from three UK centres. Results: Among these 178 patients, 149 underwent primary surgery and 29 received non-surgical treatment (primary endocrine therapy (N=28) or radiotherapy (N=1)). CGA determined that increasing age (p=0.006), reduced independence with activities of daily living (ADLs) (p=0.001) and independent activities of daily living (IADLS) (p=0.001), increased number and severity of comorbidity (p=0.043), reduced Karnofsky performance status when rated both by the patient (p=0.001) and physician (p=0.003), were significantly related to non-surgical treatment within 6 weeks after diagnosis. Other CGA parameters measured which were not significant include number of daily medications, level of social support, level of social activity, cognition, number of falls, 'Timed up and go' score. Conclusions: The pilot study has confirmed that CGA may have value in assessing this cohort of patients. Generally, it appears that patients receiving non-surgical treatment are more frail than their counterparts undergoing surgery. The study is ongoing and has expanded to include an international centre
