    We have all been stunned by the speed of this viral pandemic. At the time of writing, one fifth of the world is under lockdown. The main foci have been on the public health effort to contain the spread of the virus, and the care of individuals with acute infection. We, in eating disorders, must have a broader brief. Not only must we help care for those sufferers who contract COVID-19, we must also address the impact-psychological, financial and social - on those that do not. The peculiarities of COVID-19 and the reaction of the public and governments to it, have particular relevance for people living with an eating disorder and those who care for them

    Debatable land: an essay on the relationship between English and Scottish criminal law

    This article proposes that a better understanding of the identity of Scots criminal law can be developed through an analysis of the similarities between English and Scots law rather than by concentrating on the differences. It argues that historically there are striking similarities between the two laws which have been overlooked or ignoredfor various reasons. It goes on to argue that many ofthe current differences between the two laws can be explained in terms of contemporary academic and institutional conditions, and that these offer a betterfoundation on which to construct a principled theoretical understanding of Scots criminal law

    By theorems of Ferguson and Lacey (d=2) and Lacey and Terwilleger (d>2), Nehari's theorem is known to hold on the polydisc D^d for d>1, i.e., if H_\psi is a bounded Hankel form on H^2(D^d) with analytic symbol \psi, then there is a function \phi in L^\infty(\T^d) such that \psi is the Riesz projection of \phi. A method proposed in Helson's last paper is used to show that the constant C_d in the estimate \|\phi\|_\infty\le C_d \|H_\psi\| grows at least exponentially with d; it follows that there is no analogue of Nehari's theorem on the infinite-dimensional polydisc

    Formation time distribution of dark matter haloes: theories versus N-body simulations

    This paper uses numerical simulations to test the formation time distribution of dark matter haloes predicted by the analytic excursion set approaches. The formation time distribution is closely linked to the conditional mass function and this test is therefore an indirect probe of this distribution. The excursion set models tested are the extended Press-Schechter (EPS) model, the ellipsoidal collapse (EC) model, and the non-spherical collapse boundary (NCB) model. Three sets of simulations (6 realizations) have been used to investigate the halo formation time distribution for halo masses ranging from dwarf-galaxy like haloes (M=103MM=10^{-3} M_*, where MM_* is the characteristic non-linear mass scale) to massive haloes of M=8.7MM=8.7 M_*. None of the models can match the simulation results at both high and low redshift. In particular, dark matter haloes formed generally earlier in our simulations than predicted by the EPS model. This discrepancy might help explain why semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, based on EPS merger trees, under-predict the number of high redshift galaxies compared with recent observations.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Toward an Improved Analytical Description of Lagrangian Bias

    We carry out a detailed numerical investigation of the spatial correlation function of the initial positions of cosmological dark matter halos. In this Lagrangian coordinate system, which is especially useful for analytic studies of cosmological feedback, we are able to construct cross-correlation functions of objects with varying masses and formation redshifts and compare them with a variety of analytical approaches. For the case in which both formation redshifts are equal, we find good agreement between our numerical results and the bivariate model of Scannapieco & Barkana (2002; SB02) at all masses, redshifts, and separations, while the model of Porciani et al. (1998) does well for all parameters except for objects with different masses at small separations. We find that the standard mapping between Lagrangian and Eulerian bias performs well for rare objects at all separations, but fails if the objects are highly-nonlinear (low-sigma) peaks. In the Lagrangian case in which the formation redshifts differ, the SB02 model does well for all separations and combinations of masses, apart from a discrepancy at small separations in situations in which the smaller object is formed earlier and the difference between redshifts or masses is large. As this same limitation arises in the standard approach to the single-point progenitor distribution developed by Lacey & Cole (1993), we conclude that a more complete understanding of the progenitor distribution is the most important outstanding issue in the analytic modeling of Lagrangian bias.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, ApJ, in pres

    The Static Dielectric Constant of a Colloidal Suspension

    We derive an expression for the static dielectric constant of the colloidal susp ensions based on the electrokinetic equations. The analysis assumes that the ions have the same diffusivity, and that the double layer is much thinner than the radius of curvature of the particles. It is shown that the dielectric increment of the double layer polarization mechanism is originated from the free energy stored in the salt concentration inhomogeniety. We also show that the dominant polarization charges in the theory are at the electrodes, rather than close to the particles.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

As noted in the introduction, To understand a theory is to travel into someone else’s mind. Most of the book clears the path toward that journey by presenting a sampler of chapters focusing on the use of theoretical frameworks in actual qualitative research studies. Finally, the editors bring the book full circle by summarizing the various roles theoretical frameworks played in the preceding chapters. This book provides a common basis for quantitative and qualitative researchers to continue the discussion about the role of theory in qualitative research

    Reputation-Based Internet Protocol Security: A Multilayer Security Framework for Mobil Ad Hoc Networks

    This research effort examines the theory, application, and results for a Reputation-based Internet Protocol Security (RIPSec) framework that provides security for an ad-hoc network operating in a hostile environment. In RIPSec, protection from external threats is provided in the form of encrypted communication links and encryption-wrapped nodes while internal threats are mitigated by behavior grading that assigns reputations to nodes based on their demonstrated participation in the routing process. Network availability is provided by behavior grading and round-robin multipath routing. If a node behaves faithfully, it earns a positive reputation over time. If a node misbehaves (for any number of reasons, not necessarily intentional), it earns a negative reputation. Each member of the MANET has its own unique and subjective set of Reputation Indexes (RI) that enumerates the perceived reputation of the other MANET nodes. Nodes that desire to send data will eliminate relay nodes they perceive to have a negative reputation during the formulation of a route. A 50-node MANET is simulated with streaming multimedia and varying levels of misbehavior to determine the impact of the framework on network performance. Results of this research were very favorable. Analysis of the simulation data shows the number of routing errors sent in a MANET is reduced by an average of 52% when using RIPSec. The network load is also reduced, decreasing the overall traffic introduced into the MANET and permitting individual nodes to perform more work without overtaxing their limited resources. Finally, throughput is decreased due to larger packet sizes and longer round trips for packets to traverse the MANET, but is still sufficient to pass traffic with high bandwidth requirements (i.e., video and imagery) that is of interest in military networks
