Chemokines: key players in innate and adaptive immunity.
Healthy individuals initiate an immediate immune response to microbes by using a set of germline-encoded receptors that recognize common molecular patterns found on the surface of pathogens that are distinct from self-antigens. This innate immune response is the first line of defense against microorganisms in vertebrates, and constitutes the only immune response in plants and invertebrates. The innate immune system includes cellular components, as well as a host of soluble products (antimicrobial peptides, complement fragments, cytokines, and chemokines). The adaptive immune response, which provides long-lasting protection, takes days to develop and requires somatic mutations leading to the development of antigen-specific T cell receptors (cell-mediated immunity) and immunoglobulins (humoral immunity). Members of the chemokine superfamily are crucially involved in both innate and adaptive responses. We review the biological actions of the chemokine superfamily, focusing on several functions that are relevant for both immune responses, such as cell recruitment, microbicidal activity, cell activation, polarization of CD4+ T cells, and effects on structural cells. In particular, we will illustrate the central role that chemokines play in host defense, best demonstrated by the tremendous number of chemokine and chemokine receptor homologs found in microbial genomes, which deflect the immune response of the host
A Superheated Droplet Detector for Dark Matter Search
We discuss the operation principle of a detector based on superheated
droplets of Freon-12 and its feasibility for the search of weakly interacting
cold dark matter particles. In particular we are interested in a neutralino
search experiment in the mass range from 10 to 10^4 GeV/c^2 and with a
sensitivity of better than 10^-2 events/kg/d. We show that our new proposed
detector can be operated at ambient pressure and room temperature in a mode
where it is exclusively sensitive to nuclear recoils like those following
neutralino interactions, which allows a powerful background discrimination. An
additional advantage of this technique is due to the fact that the detection
material, Freon-12, is cheap and readily available in large quantities.
Moreover we were able to show that piezoelectric transducers allow efficient

Anisotropy at the end of the cosmic ray spectrum?
The starburst galaxies M82 and NGC253 have been proposed as the primary
sources of cosmic rays with energies above eV. For energies \agt
10^{20.3} eV the model predicts strong anisotropies. We calculate the
probabilities that the latter can be due to chance occurrence. For the highest
energy cosmic ray events in this energy region, we find that the observed
directionality has less than 1% probability of occurring due to random
fluctuations. Moreover, during the first 5 years of operation at Auger, the
observation of even half the predicted anisotropy has a probability of less
than to occur by chance fluctuation. Thus, this model can be subject
to test at very small cost to the Auger priors budget and, whatever the outcome
of that test, valuable information on the Galactic magnetic field will be

Classical motion in force fields with short range correlations
We study the long time motion of fast particles moving through time-dependent
random force fields with correlations that decay rapidly in space, but not
necessarily in time. The time dependence of the averaged kinetic energy and
mean-squared displacement is shown to exhibit a large degree of universality;
it depends only on whether the force is, or is not, a gradient vector field.
When it is, p^{2}(t) ~ t^{2/5} independently of the details of the potential
and of the space dimension. Motion is then superballistic in one dimension,
with q^{2}(t) ~ t^{12/5}, and ballistic in higher dimensions, with q^{2}(t) ~
t^{2}. These predictions are supported by numerical results in one and two
dimensions. For force fields not obtained from a potential field, the power
laws are different: p^{2}(t) ~ t^{2/3} and q^{2}(t) ~ t^{8/3} in all dimensions
d\geq 1
Entropic Interactions in Suspensions of Semi-Flexible Rods: Short-Range Effects of Flexibility
We compute the entropic interactions between two colloidal spheres immersed
in a dilute suspension of semi-flexible rods. Our model treats the
semi-flexible rod as a bent rod at fixed angle, set by the rod contour and
persistence lengths. The entropic forces arising from this additional
rotational degree of freedom are captured quantitatively by the model, and
account for observations at short range in a recent experiment. Global fits to
the interaction potential data suggest the persistence length of fd-virus is

A Pragmatic Assessment of Government Support for Organic Agriculture in Ireland
Drawing on a pragmatic approach, this paper provides an analysis of governmental support for organic farming in Ireland. There are varying levels of encouragement and programmes provided to farmers in their conversion from conventional to organic production, and in their maintenance of organic production. Support policies vary across regions and are linked to European Union legislation, thus it is challenging to document the many types of support in place. This research investigates relevant technical, financial, and policy support available to organic farmers in Ireland. This exploratory study develops an assessment of Ireland within eight key categories of organic agricultural support: leadership, policy, research, technical support, financial support, marketing and promotion, education and information, and future developments. Information and data from the Irish Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (DAFF), the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority (Teagasc), and other governmental and semi-governmental agencies were utilized to assess the level of support in each category. Following the pragmatic approach, this assessment provides key findings which allow policymakers, organizations and citizens to better understand the current situation and set a path for the future development of organic farming in Ireland
Deuteron Electroweak Disintegration
We study the deuteron electrodisintegration with inclusion of the neutral
currents focusing on the helicity asymmetry of the exclusive cross section in
coplanar geometry. We stress that a measurement of this asymmetry in the quasi
elastic region is of interest for an experimental determination of the weak
form factors of the nucleon, allowing one to obtain the parity violating
electron neutron asymmetry. Numerically, we consider the reaction at low
momentum transfer and discuss the sensitivity of the helicity asymmetry to the
strangeness radius and magnetic moment. The problems coming from the finite
