    Chilean Exile: Trauma and Opportunities

    The article explores the experience of the Chilean school for refugee children created in South Yorkshire in the 70’s / 80’s. It provides an account of the first Chilean school for exiled children created in England. The article considers the circumstances that both the children, and their parents faced, separately and as a family unit in their new lives as refugees. This was a key impetus to set up a resource within the community. How the school was organised, and the collectively agreed objectives are described

    Double non-perturbative gluon exchange: an update on the soft Pomeron contribution to pp scattering

    We employ a set of recent, theoretically motivated, fits to non-perturbative unquenched gluon propagators to check in how far double gluon exchange can be used to describe the soft sector of pp scattering data (total and differential cross section). In particular, we use the refined Gribov--Zwanziger gluon propagator (as arising from dealing with the Gribov gauge fixing ambiguity) and the massive Cornwall-type gluon propagator (as motivated from Dyson-Schwinger equations) in conjunction with a perturbative quark-gluon vertex, next to a model based on the non-perturbative quark-gluon Maris-Tandy vertex, popular from Bethe-Salpeter descriptions of hadronic bound states. We compare the cross sections arising from these models with "older" ISR and more recent TOTEM and ATLAS data.     Effects of clinical experience in the nursing student attitudes toward people with psychiatric disabilities

    Indexación: Scopus; Scielo.En la formación del estudiante de pregrado de Enfermería se hace fundamental la elección de experiencias de aprendizaje significativas. Objetivo: Determinar el efecto de la experiencia clínica en servicios de psiquiatría, en las actitudes de estudiantes de Enfermería hacia las personas con discapacidad psiquiátrica. Material y método: Diseño cuasi experimental de pre y postest. La muestra incluyó un total de 84 estudiantes de Enfermería de tercer año de dos universidades de Santiago de Chile. El total de la muestra completó la "Escala de Actitudes hacia las Personas con Discapacidad" (EAPD) forma G. Se consideró como intervención las estrategias usadas en las asignaturas clínicas de enfermería psiquiátrica en ambas universidades. Se realizó prueba t de student para muestras relacionadas. Resultados: Se encontró diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p< 0,05) en el postest, lo que está relacionado con las experiencias de aprendizaje que consideran el contacto con personas con discapacidad psiquiátrica, en diferentes dispositivos de la red de psiquiatría y el acompañamiento docente directo. Conclusión: Estos hallazgos validan la importancia de la elección de experiencias clínicas, en los currículos de formación de Enfermería, como instancias que disminuyen las actitudes negativas como la estigmatización.The choice of meaningful learning experiences becomes essential in basic Nursing education programs. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of clinical experience in psychiatric services in Nursing students' attitudes towards people with mental illnesses. A quasi-experimental design method of pre-test and post-test was used. The sample was made up of 84 third-year-nursing students from two universities in Santiago, Chile. All of the participants completed the Scale of Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons (SADP)-G. The strategies used in subjects of psychiatric nursing at both universities were regarded as intervention. Student t test for related samples was performed. Results: Respondents reported statistically significant difference (p <0.05) in the post test, which is associated with learning experiences that consider contact with people with mental illness in any of the different psychiatry network nodes and direct educational support.     The Carina Nebula and Gum 31 molecular complex: II. The distribution of the atomic gas revealed in unprecedented detail

    We report high spatial resolution observations of the HI 21cm line in the Carina Nebula and the Gum 31 region obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The observations covered \sim 12 deg2^2 centred on l=287.5deg,b=1degl= 287.5\deg,b = -1\deg, achieving an angular resolution of \sim 35 arcseconds. The HI map revealed complex filamentary structures across a wide range of velocities. Several "bubbles" are clearly identified in the Carina Nebula Complex, produced by the impact of the massive star clusters located in this region. An HI absorption profile obtained towards the strong extragalactic radio source PMN J1032--5917 showed the distribution of the cold component of the atomic gas along the Galactic disk, with the Sagittarius-Carina and Perseus spiral arms clearly distinguishable. Preliminary calculations of the optical depth and spin temperatures of the cold atomic gas show that the HI line is opaque (τ\tau \gtrsim 2) at several velocities in the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm. The spin temperature is 100\sim100 K in the regions with the highest optical depth, although this value might be lower for the saturated components. The atomic mass budget of Gum 31 is 35%\sim35 \% of the total gas mass. HI self absorption features have molecular counterparts and good spatial correlation with the regions of cold dust as traced by the infrared maps. We suggest that in Gum 31 regions of cold temperature and high density are where the atomic to molecular gas phase transition is likely to be occurring.Comment: 20 pages, 1 table, 16 Figures, Accepted for Publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Journa

    InContext: A mobile application for the improvement of learning strategies at University // InContext: Una aplicación móvil para mejorar las estrategias de aprendizaje en la Universidad

    InContext is a custom-designed mobile application for writing assignments intended for university students in journalism and research methodology courses. In these disciplines, it has been observed that there is a need for an educational and technological tool to guide the writing of text using preloaded templates in which students can input text and multimedia material to create articles or write research reports. Besides its ease of use, the app was intended to improve metacognitive thinking. This led to the establishment of six working hypotheses in an exploratory study. For the study, a random sample of students enrolled in the aforementioned courses was selected during the August-December 2019 semester at a private university in Mexico. They took a pre-test using the “Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire” (MSLQ) that had been translated into Spanish and already validated in Mexico. Subsequently, the students used the application and then answered the same questionnaire as a post-test. The study aimed to compare the results of the tests to see whether there was an improvement in cognitive skills. The results showed an increase in four skills: critical thinking, data search, cognitive self-regulation, and regulation of effort. The research results did indicate metacognitive development that would benefit the academic and professional work of future graduates

    InContext es una aplicación móvil, diseñada a medida, para elaborar trabajos de redacción para estudiantes universitarios de los cursos de periodismo y de metodología de la investigación. En estas disciplinas se observó que había una necesidad de contar con una herramienta educativa y tecnológica que guiara la redacción utilizando plantillas precargadas en las cuales los estudiantes pudieran agregar texto y material multimedia para con ello construir artículos periodísticos o reportes de investigación. Además de la facilidad de uso, se esperaba que la app mejorara el pensamiento metacognitivo, por lo cual se establecieron seis hipótesis de trabajo en un estudio exploratorio. Para la investigación se seleccionó una muestra aleatoria de estudiantes inscritos en los cursos durante el semestre agosto-diciembre 2019 en una universidad privada de México. Los alumnos realizaron un pretest utilizando el cuestionario Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) traducido al español y ya validado en México; posteriormente utilizaron la aplicación y contestaron el mismo cuestionario a manera de postest, con el objetivo de comparar si había una mejora en las habilidades cognitivas. Los resultados indican que existe un aumento en cuatro habilidades: pensamiento crítico, búsqueda de datos, autorregulación cognitiva y regulación del esfuerzo, pero no lo hubo en organización ni en búsqueda de ayuda.
