Re-evaluation of the Gottfried sum using neural networks
We provide a determination of the Gottfried sum from all available data,
based on a neural network parametrization of the nonsinglet structure function
F_2. We find S_G=0.244 +- 0.045, closer to the quark model expectation S_G=1/3
than previous results. We show that the uncertainty from the small x region is

Anomaly-Induced Magnetic Screening in 2+1 dimensional QED at Finite Density
We show that in 2+1 dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics an external magnetic
field applied to a finite density of massless fermions is screened, due to a
-dimensional realization of the underlying -dimensional axial anomaly
of the space components of the electric current. This is shown to imply
screening of the magnetic field, i.e., the Meissner effect. We discuss the

Historic records and GIS applications for flood risk analysis in the Salento peninsula (southern Italy)
International audienceThe occurrence of calamitous meteoric events represents a current problem of the Salento peninsula (Southern Italy). In fact, flash floods, generated by very intense rainfall, occur not only in autumn and winter, but at the end of summer as well. These calamities are amplified by peculiar geological and geomorphological characteristics of Salento and by the pollution of sinkholes. Floodings affect often large areas, especially in the impermeable lowering zones. These events cause warnings and emergency states, involving people as well as socio-economic goods. A methodical investigation based on the historic flood records and an analysis of the geoenvironmental factors have been performed, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) methodology for database processing in order to identify the distribution of areas with different risk degrees. The data, referring to events that occurred from 1968 to 2004, have been collected in a database, the so-called IPHAS (Salento Alluvial PHenomena Inventory), extracted in an easily consultable table. The final goal is the development of a risk map where the areas that are affected by floodings are included between small ridges, the so-called "Serre". More than 50% of the Salento peninsula shows high or very high risk values. The numerous maps that were utilized and generated represent an important basis in order to quantify the flood risk, according to the model using historic records
Large-scale study of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system in Fornax
We present a Washington C and Kron-Cousins R photometric study of the
globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster.
A large areal coverage of 1 square degree around NGC 1399 is achieved with
three adjoining fields of the MOSAIC II Imager at the CTIO 4-m telescope.
Working on such a large field, we can perform the first indicative
determination of the total size of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system. The
estimated angular extent, measured from the NGC 1399 centre and up to a
limiting radius where the areal density of blue globular clusters falls to 30
per cent of the background level, is 45 +/- 5 arcmin, which corresponds to 220
- 275 kpc at the Fornax distance. The bimodal colour distribution of this
globular cluster system, as well as the different radial distribution of blue
and red clusters, up to these large distances from the parent galaxy, are
confirmed. The azimuthal globular cluster distribution exhibits asymmetries
that might be understood in terms of tidal stripping of globulars from NGC
1387, a nearby galaxy. The good agreement between the areal density profile of

Applications of DFT to the theory of twentieth-century harmony
Music theorists have only recently, following groundbreaking work by Quinn, recognized the potential for the DFT on pcsets, initially proposed by Lewin, to serve as the foundation of a theory of harmony for the twentieth century. This paper investigates pcset âarithmeticâ â subset structure, transpositional combination, and interval content â through the lens of the DFT. It discusses relationships between interval classes and DFT magnitudes, considers special properties of dyads, pcset products, and generated collections, and suggest methods of using the DFT in analysis, including interpreting DFT magnitudes, using phase spaces to understand subset structure, and interpreting the DFT of Lewinâs interval function. Small Angle Polarization in High Energy P--P Scattering Through Nonperturbative Chiral Symmetry Breaking
We show that a large anomalous contribution due to nonperturbative
instanton-like gluonic field configurations to the axial charge of the proton
implies high-energy spin effects in elastic scattering. This is the same
mechanism which is responsible for anomalous baryon number violation at high
energy in the standard model. We compute the proton polarization due to these
effects and we show that it is proportional to the center-of-mass scattering
angle with a universal (energy-independent) slope of order unity.Comment: (13 pages, 2 figures
Progress on neural parton distributions
We give a status report on the determination of a set of parton distributions
based on neural networks. In particular, we summarize the determination of the
nonsinglet quark distribution up to NNLO, we compare it with results obtained
using other approaches, and we discuss its use for a determination of

Recent progress on NNPDF for LHC
We present recent results of the NNPDF collaboration on a full DIS analysis
of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). Our method is based on the idea of
combining a Monte Carlo sampling of the probability measure in the space of
PDFs with the use of neural networks as unbiased universal interpolating
functions. The general structure of the project and the features of the fit are

The impact of heavy quark mass effects in the NNPDF global analysis
We discuss the implementation of the FONLL general-mass scheme for heavy
quarks in deep-inelastic scattering in the FastKernel framework, used in the
NNPDF series of global PDF analysis. We present the general features of FONLL
and benchmark the accuracy of its implementation in FastKernel comparing with
the Les Houches heavy quark benchmark tables. We then show preliminary results
of the NNPDF2.1 analysis, in which heavy quark mass effects are included
