Vulnerabilities and responsibilities: dealing with monsters in computer security

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze information security assessment in terms of cultural categories and virtue ethics, in order to explain the cultural origin of certain types of security vulnerabilities, as well as to enable a proactive attitude towards preventing such vulnerabilities.\ud \ud Design/methodology/approach – Vulnerabilities in information security are compared to the concept of “monster” introduced by Martijntje Smits in philosophy of technology. The applicability of different strategies for dealing with monsters to information security is discussed, and the strategies are linked to attitudes in virtue ethics.\ud \ud Findings – It is concluded that the present approach can form the basis for dealing proactively with unknown future vulnerabilities in information security.\ud \ud Research limitations/implications – The research presented here does not define a stepwise approach for implementation of the recommended strategy in practice. This is future work.\ud \ud Practical implications – The results of this paper enable computer experts to rethink their attitude towards security threats, thereby reshaping their practices.\ud \ud Originality/value – This paper provides an alternative anthropological framework for descriptive and normative analysis of information security problems, which does not rely on the objectivity of risk

Visual Attention During Brand Choice: The Impact of Time Pressure and Task Motivation

Measures derived from eye-movement data reveal that during brand choice consumers adapt to time pressure by accelerating the visual scanning sequence, by filtering information and by changing their scanning strategy. In addition, consumers with high task motivation filter brand information less and pictorial information more. Consumers under time pressure filter textual ingredient information more, and pictorial information less. The results of a conditional logit analysis reveal that the chosen brand receives significantly more intra-brand and inter-brand saccades and longer fixation durations than non-chosen brands, independent of time pressure and task motivation conditions. Implications for the theory of consumer attention and for pretesting of packaging and shelf lay-outs are discussed.Brand choice;time pressure;task motivation;visual attention

Reflectance spectra of some fractions of Migei and Murchison SM chondrites in the range of 0.3-2.6 microns

The reddening observed in CM chondrites is not understood. Johnson and Fanale observed that, as CM chondrites are more finely powdered, their spectra become more reddened. In the process of meteorite crushing, the chondrules are broken up. Those authors suggested that in this case the silicate components of the chondrules (mainly olivine), which have higher IR reflectivities, were able to contribute more to the overall spectrum. Gaffey and McCord proposed two possible physical mechanisms which could produce such an effect. But it is also possible that the presence of the organic polymers in the matrix material results in the reddening of the CM spectra. To test these two hypotheses, the matrix material and the material enriched in olivines were separated from Migei and Murchison CM chondrites using a binocular microscope. The spectra of these fractions were compared with the spectra of the bulk samples of Migei and Murchison. The spectra of the most 'clean' Migei matrix fractions indicate that the reddish slopes of CM spectral curves in the near infrared are due to the enhanced olivine feature, rather than to organic matter. The authors propose that the red slope of the spectra of some C-type asteroids may indirectly suggest the presence of olivine in the surface material. At the same time, the red sloped spectra of more distant D-type asteroids seem to be due to the presence of organic materials. If so, then the chemical or physical form of this organic matter must be quite different from the organic materials which would be on the surfaces of the parent bodies of CM chondrites (most likely C-type asteroids). It is also possible that the content of organic components in the CM matrix is too low to change the slope of the spectra

    And There Were Five

Biographical materials about the five presidents who have served in the administration of St. Norbert College appear to abound in number. Many of these, however, are scattered in various locations---some in local and Green Bay newspaper files, some in De Pere and Green Bay historical society archives, some in the St. Norbert Abbey Archives, and a goodly share in the St. Norbert College Archival area. This booklet, then, is an attempt to bring some of this material about the presidents into a composite of the \u27first five\u27.https://digitalcommons.snc.edu/digitalarchive/1002/thumbnail.jp

First paragraph: Nine years passed after the first edition (1980) and again nine years after the second edition (1989) of the St. Norbert College building booklets. Now, only three years after the third 1998 Centennial Edition, five new or remodeled buildings and thirteen class memorials should be added to our building history.https://digitalcommons.snc.edu/digitalarchive/1000/thumbnail.jp

First paragraph: Founded in 1898, St. Norbert College has grown from its earliest building St. Joseph Church, (now Old St. Joseph Church), built in 1871, and St. Joseph Parish Rectory, built in 1872, to become a beautiful campus consisting of thirty-nine buildings situated on some sixty well landscaped and tree-shaded acres along the Fox River in De Pere, Wisconsin.https://digitalcommons.snc.edu/digitalarchive/1001/thumbnail.jp

A qualitative comparison of how older breast cancer survivors process treatment information regarding endocrine therapy.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND:It remains unclear how information about aromatase inhibitors (AI) impacts women's decision-making about persistence with endocrine therapy. PURPOSE:To describe and compare how women treated for primary early stage breast cancer either persisting or not persisting with an AI received, interpreted, and acted upon AI-related information. DESIGN:Thematic analysis was used to sort and compare the data into the most salient themes. PARTICIPANTS:Women (N = 54; 27 persisting, 27 not persisting with an AI) aged 65-93 years took part in qualitative interviews. RESULTS:Women in both subgroups described information similarly in terms of its value, volume, type, and source. Aspects of AI-related information that either differed between the subgroups or were misunderstood by one or both subgroups included: (1) knowledge of AI or tamoxifen prior to cancer diagnosis, (2) use of online resources, (3) misconceptions about estrogen, hormone replacement therapies and AI-related symptoms, and (4) risk perception and the meaning and use of recurrence statistics such as Oncotype DX. CONCLUSIONS:Persisters and nonpersisters were similar in their desire for more information about potential side effects and symptom management at AI prescription and subsequent appointments. Differences included how information was obtained and interpreted. Interactive discussion questions are shared that can incorporate these findings into clinical settings
