    Pattern Competition in the Photorefractive Semiconductors

    We analytically study the photorefractive Gunn effect in n-GaAs subjected to two external laser beams which form a moving interference pattern (MIP) in the semiconductor. When the intensity of the spatially independent part of the MIP, denoted by I0I_0, is small, the system has a periodic domain train (PDT), consistent with the results of linear stability analysis. When I0I_0 is large, the space-charge field induced by the MIP will compete with the PDT and result in complex dynamics, including driven chaos via quasiperiodic route

    ‘I Got it off my Chest’: An Examination of how Research Participation Improved the Mental Health of Women Engaging in Transactional Sex

    Ecologic momentary assessment (EMA) is a form of close-ended diary writing. While it has been shown that participating in a study that incorporates EMA improves mental health of participants, no study to date has examined the pathways through which benefits may occur. For 4-weeks, twice-daily EMAs and weekly interviews captured mood, daily activities and HIV risk behavior of 25 women who engage in transactional sex. Qualitative analysis of exit interviews was performed to examine how participation impacted women's mental health. The majority of participants felt that EMAs heightened awareness of emotions and behavior. Most reported experiencing catharsis from the interviews; specifically, from having a non-judgmental, trusting listener. Participants felt responsible for completing tasks, a sense of accomplishment for completing the study, and altruism. This study demonstrates there are direct benefits associated with participation in an EMA and interview study

    The Unanticipated Benefits of Behavioral Assessments and Interviews on Anxiety, Self-Esteem and Depression Among Women Engaging in Transactional Sex

    Women engaging in transactional sex have disproportional mental health co-morbidity and face substantial barriers to accessing social services. We hypothesized that participation in a longitudinal research study, with no overt intervention, would lead to short-term mental health improvements. For 4-weeks, 24 women disclosed information about their lives via twice daily cell-phone diaries and weekly interviews. We used t tests to compare self-esteem, anxiety, and depression at baseline and exit. Tests were repeated for hypothesized effect modifiers (e.g., substance abuse severity; age of sex work debut). For particularly vulnerable women (e.g., less educated, histories of abuse, younger initiation of sex work) participation in research conferred unanticipated mental health benefits. Positive interactions with researchers, as well as discussing lived experiences, may explain these effects. Additional studies are needed to confirm findings and identify mechanisms of change. This work contributes to the growing body of literature documenting that study participation improves mental health

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Australia is developing a chlamydia screening program. This study aimed to determine the attitudes of young women to the introduction of chlamydia screening in Australian General Practice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In-depth face-to-face interviews with 24 young women from across Victoria, Australia, attending a randomly selected sample of general practices.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Young women reported that they would accept age-based screening for chlamydia in general practice, during both sexual-health and non-sexual-health related consultations. Trust in their general practitioner (GP) was reported to be a major factor in the acceptability of chlamydia screening. The women felt chlamydia screening should be offered to <it>all </it>young women rather than targeted at "high risk" women based on sexual history and they particularly emphasised the importance of normalising chlamydia screening. The women reported that they did not want to be asked to provide a sexual history as part of being asked to have a chlamydia test. Some reported that they would lie if asked how many partners they had had</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Women do not want a sexual history taken when being asked to have a chlamydia test while attending a general practitioner. They prefer the offer of chlamydia screening to be based on age rather than assessment of sexual risk. Chlamydia screening needs to be normalised and destigmatised.</p

    Experiences of refugees and asylum seekers towards access and utilisation of sexual health services: A systematic review

    A systematic review protocol for exploring the experiences and utilisation of sexually transmitted infections and HIV testing and treatments among refugees and asylum seekers in both overdeveloped and underdeveloped countries are the contexts of this review. Issues facing refugees and displaced people are some of the most complicated humanitarian concerns globally. The UN Refugee Agency, UK reports that at least 89.3 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes (UNHCR UK, 2021). Among them, nearly 27.1million are refugees and 4.6 million are asylum seekers (UNHCR, 2021). Evidence shows the access and utilisation of sexual health services among these populations are comparatively limited
