SEASAT: A satellite scatterometer illumination times of selected in situ sites
A list of times that the SEASAT A Satellite Scatterometer (SASS) illuminated from directly above or directly abeam, selected surface sites where in situ winds were measured is provided. The list is ordered by the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) of the midpoint of the illumination period (hit time) for a given surface site. The site identification, the orbit number and the direction from the subtrack in which the truth lies are provided. The accuracy of these times depends in part upon the ascending node times, which are estimated to be within +.1 sec, and on the illumination time relative to the ascending node, which is estimated to be within +6 seconds. The uncertainties in the times provided were judged to be sufficiently small to allow efficient and accurate extraction of SASS and in situ data at the selected surface sites. The list contains approximately six thousand hit times from 61 geographically dispersed sites

Songo River Line to the Switzerland of America Up in Maine
The Songo River Line consisted of a fleet of steamers traveling along the Cumberland and Oxford Canal. The Canal was opened in 1832 to connect the largest lakes of southern Maine with the seaport of Portland, Maine. It followed the Presumpscot River from Sebago Lake through the towns of Standish, Windham, Gorham, and Westbrook. The Canal diverged from the river at Westbrook to reach the navigable Fore River estuary and Portland Harbor. The Line ended in 1932.https://digitalmaine.com/books/1065/thumbnail.jp
Water quality effects of intermittent water supply in Arraiján, Panama
Intermittent drinking water supply is common in low- and middle-income countries throughout the world and can cause waterquality to degrade in the distribution system. In this study,we characterized waterquality in one study zone with continuous supply and three zoneswith intermittentsupply in the drinking waterdistribution network in Arraija!n,Panama.Low orzero pressuresoccurred in allzones, and negative pressuresoccurred in the continuouszone and two ofthe intermittentzones.Despite hydraulic conditions that created risks for backflow and contaminant intrusion, only four of 423 (0.9%) grab samplescollected atrandom timeswere positive fortotalcoliform bacteria and only one waspositive for E.coli.Only nine of 496 (1.8%) samples had turbidity >1.0 NTU and all samples had !0.2 mg/L free chlorine residual. In contrast, water quality was often degraded during the first-flush period (when supply first returned after an outage).Still, routine and first-flush water quality under intermittent supply was much better in Arraija!n than that reported in a previous study conducted in India.Better waterquality in Arraija!n could be due to betterwaterquality leaving the treatmentplant, shortersupply outages, highersupply pressures,a more consistentand higherchlorine residual, and fewercontaminant sourcesnearpipes. The resultsillustrate thatintermittentsupply and itseffectson waterquality can vary greatly between and within distribution networks. The study also demonstrated thatmonitoring techniques designed specifically for intermittentsupply, such as continuous pressure monitoring and sampling the firstflush, can detectwaterquality threats and degradation thatwould notlikely be detected with conventionalmonitoring.Intermittent drinking water supply is common in low- and middle-income countries throughout the world and can cause waterquality to degrade in the distribution system. The study also demonstrated thatmonitoring techniques designed specifically for intermittentsupply, such as continuous pressure monitoring and sampling the firstflush, can detectwaterquality threats and degradation thatwould notlikely be detected with conventionalmonitoring
Development of a Versatile Methodology for the Synthesis of Poly(2,5-benzophenone) Containing Coil−Rod−Coil Triblock Copolymers
A short, simple, versatile methodology was developed for the synthesis of poly(2,5-benzophenone) containing coil−rod−coil triblock copolymers. After a model study, poly(2,5-benzophenone) macroinitiators were synthesized via end-capping poly(2,5-dichlorobenzophenone) synthesized by Ni(0)-catalyzed polymerization and functionalization of the chain ends utilizing phase transfer chlorination. Varying molecular weights of polystyrene-b-poly(2,5-benzophenone)-b-polystyrene were synthesized using the macroinitiators in the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene. The materials were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. Applications were explored through dynamic mechanical analysis and the construction of a distributed junction photovoltaic device
Household stored water quality in an intermittent water supply network in Panama
Safe water storage is critical to preserve water quality, especially when intermittent piped drinking water supply creates a need for household storage. This study characterized household storage practices and stored water quality in 94 households (N = 94) among four peri-urban neighborhoods in Arraiján, Panama with varying degrees of supply intermittency. We found that 18 (19.1%) households stored drinking water in unsafe containers. Forty-four (47%) samples of household stored drinking water had residual chlorine levels 10 most probable number (MPN)/100 mL total coliform bacteria. Eight (44%) samples were positive for Escherichia coli, whereas only one (1.3%) sample from the safe containers was positive. Twenty-nine (30.9%) samples had >500 MPN/mL heterotrophic plate count bacteria. These findings suggest that longer supply interruptions were associated with longer storage times and lower chlorine residual, which were associated with higher concentrations of indicator bacteria. This is one of the first studies in the Central-American region to show an association between the lack of turnover (replacement with fresh water) and greater contamination during household water storage. Thus, when drinking water supply is not completely continuous and household storage is required, decreasing the time between supply periods can facilitate safer water storage. Public awareness and education are also recommended to increase hygiene practices during water collection and storage.Safe water storage is critical to preserve water quality, especially when intermittent piped drinking water supply creates a need for household storage. Hippocampal Place Cell Instability after Lesions of the Head Direction Cell Network
The occurrence of cells that encode spatial location (place cells) or head direction (HD cells) in the rat limbic system suggests that these cell types are important for spatial navigation. We sought to determine whether place fields of hippocampal CA1 place cells would be altered in animals receiving lesions of brain areas containing HD cells. Rats received bilateral lesions of anterodorsal thalamic nuclei (ADN), postsubiculum (PoS), or sham lesions, before place cell recording. Although place cells from lesioned animals did not differ from controls on many place-field characteristics, such as place-field size and infield firing rate, the signal was significantly degraded with respect to measures of outfield firing rate, spatial coherence, and information content. Surprisingly, place cells from lesioned animals were more likely modulated by the directional heading of the animal. Rotation of the landmark cue showed that place fields from PoS-lesioned animals were not controlled by the cue and shifted unpredictably between sessions. Although fields from ADN-lesioned animals tended to have less landmark control than fields from control animals, this impairment was mild compared with cells recorded from PoS-lesioned animals. Removal of the prominent visual cue also led to instability of place-field representations in PoS-lesioned, but not ADN-lesioned, animals. Together, these findings suggest that an intact HD system is not necessary for the maintenance of place fields, but lesions of brain areas that convey the HD signal can degrade this signal, and lesions of the PoS might lead to perceptual or mnemonic deficits, leading to place-field instability between sessions
China neemt (Volvo) over
Enhancement of Photosynthetic Productivity by Quantum Dots Application
The challenge of climate change promotes use of carbon neutral fuels. Biofuels are made via fixing carbon dioxide via photosynthesis which is inefficient. Light trapping pigments use restricted light wavelengths. A study using the microalga Botryococcus braunii (which produces bio-oil), the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides (which produces hydrogen), and the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis (for bulk biomass) showed that photosynthetic productivity was increased by up to 2.5-fold by upconverting unused wavelengths of sunlight via using quantum dots. For large scale commercial energy processes, a 100-fold cost reduction was calculated as the break-even point for adoption of classical QD technology into large scale photobioreactors (PBRs). As a potential alternative, zinc sulfide nanoparticles (NPs) were made using waste H2S derived from another process that precipitates metals from mine wastewaters. Biogenic ZnS NPs behaved identically to ZnS quantum dots with absorbance and emission maxima of 290 nm (UVB, which is mostly absorbed by the atmosphere) and 410 nm, respectively; the optimal wavelength for chlorophyll a is 430 nm. By using a low concentration of citrate (10 mM) during ZnS synthesis, the excitation wavelength was redshifted to 315 nm (into the UVA, 85% of which reaches the earth’s surface) with an emission peak of 425 nm, i.e., appropriate for photosynthesis. The potential for use in large scale photobioreactors is discussed in the light of current PBR designs, with respect to the need for durable UV-transmitting materials in appropriate QD delivery systems
