    A parallel algorithm for the enumeration of benzenoid hydrocarbons

    We present an improved parallel algorithm for the enumeration of fixed benzenoids B_h containing h hexagonal cells. We can thus extend the enumeration of B_h from the previous best h=35 up to h=50. Analysis of the associated generating function confirms to a very high degree of certainty that Bh∌AÎșh/hB_h \sim A \kappa^h /h and we estimate that the growth constant Îș=5.161930154(8)\kappa = 5.161930154(8) and the amplitude A=0.2808499(1)A=0.2808499(1).Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Current-induced noise and damping in non-uniform ferromagnets

    In the presence of spatial variation of the magnetization direction, electric current noise causes a fluctuating spin-transfer torque that increases the fluctuations of the ferromagnetic order parameter. By the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the equilibrium fluctuations are related to the magnetization damping, which in non-uniform ferromagnets acquires a nonlocal tensor structure. In biased ferromagnets, shot noise can become the dominant contribution to the magnetization noise at low temperatures. Considering spin spirals as a simple example, we show that the current-induced noise and damping is significant.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Reaction-diffusion processes and non-perturbative renormalisation group

    This paper is devoted to investigating non-equilibrium phase transitions to an absorbing state, which are generically encountered in reaction-diffusion processes. It is a review, based on [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 195703; Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 255703; Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 100601], of recent progress in this field that has been allowed by a non-perturbative renormalisation group approach. We mainly focus on branching and annihilating random walks and show that their critical properties strongly rely on non-perturbative features and that hence the use of a non-perturbative method turns out to be crucial to get a correct picture of the physics of these models.Comment: 14 pages, submitted to J.     Enumeration of self-avoiding walks on the square lattice

    We describe a new algorithm for the enumeration of self-avoiding walks on the square lattice. Using up to 128 processors on a HP Alpha server cluster we have enumerated the number of self-avoiding walks on the square lattice to length 71. Series for the metric properties of mean-square end-to-end distance, mean-square radius of gyration and mean-square distance of monomers from the end points have been derived to length 59. Analysis of the resulting series yields accurate estimates of the critical exponents Îł\gamma and Îœ\nu confirming predictions of their exact values. Likewise we obtain accurate amplitude estimates yielding precise values for certain universal amplitude combinations. Finally we report on an analysis giving compelling evidence that the leading non-analytic correction-to-scaling exponent Δ1=3/2\Delta_1=3/2.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure

    We show how the scattering-into-cones and flux-across-surfaces theorems in Quantum Mechanics have very intuitive pathwise probabilistic versions based on some results by Carlen about large time behaviour of paths of Nelson diffusions.     A Single Circumbinary Disk in the HD 98800 Quadruple System

    We present sub-arcsecond thermal infrared imaging of HD 98800, a young quadruple system composed of a pair of low-mass spectroscopic binaries separated by 0.8'' (38 AU), each with a K-dwarf primary. Images at wavelengths ranging from 5 to 24.5 microns show unequivocally that the optically fainter binary, HD 98800B, is the sole source of a comparatively large infrared excess upon which a silicate emission feature is superposed. The excess is detected only at wavelengths of 7.9 microns and longer, peaks at 25 microns, and has a best-fit black-body temperature of 150 K, indicating that most of the dust lies at distances greater than the orbital separation of the spectroscopic binary. We estimate the radial extent of the dust with a disk model that approximates radiation from the spectroscopic binary as a single source of equivalent luminosity. Given the data, the most-likely values of disk properties in the ranges considered are R_in = 5.0 +/- 2.5 AU, DeltaR = 13+/-8 AU, lambda_0 = 2(+4/-1.5) microns, gamma = 0+/-2.5, and sigma_total = 16+/-3 AU^2, where R_in is the inner radius, DeltaR is the radial extent of the disk, lambda_0 is the effective grain size, gamma is the radial power-law exponent of the optical depth, tau, and sigma_total is the total cross-section of the grains. The range of implied disk masses is 0.001--0.1 times that of the moon. These results show that, for a wide range of possible disk properties, a circumbinary disk is far more likely than a narrow ring.Comment: 11 page Latex manuscript with 3 postscript figures.     Regularization of a three-body problem with zero-range potentials

    We propose a coordinate-space regularization of the three-body problem with zero-range potentials. We include the effective range and the shape parameter in the boundary condition of the zero-range potential. The proposed extended zero-range model is tested against atomic helium trimers and is shown to provide an adequate quantitative description of these systems
