    Assistance tactile à la localisation de cibles périphériques pour des personnes à vision tubulaire

    International audienceLa vision tubulaire est une dĂ©ficience visuelle dans laquelle seul le champ central de la vision est prĂ©servĂ©. Elle gĂ©nĂšre de grandes difficultĂ©s dans la vie quotidienne, notamment lorsqu’il s’agit de repĂ©rer un objet d’intĂ©rĂȘt dans l’environnement. Des informations tactiles, considĂ©rĂ©es comme discrĂštes, personnelles et peu invasives, peuvent permettre d’amĂ©liorer le comportement de recherche visuelle. Dans cette Ă©tude, nous avons conçu quatre techniques tactiles permettant de localiser un point spĂ©cifique dans l’espace. Les stimulations tactiles Ă©taient soit un seul stimulus soit un train de stimuli transmis dans un systĂšme de coordonnĂ©es cartĂ©sien ou polaire. Les quatre techniques ont Ă©tĂ© comparĂ©es dans une tĂąche d’orientation de la tĂȘte. La plus efficace des techniques a Ă©tĂ© Ă©valuĂ©e avec une tĂąche de recherche visuelle dans un environnement virtuel complexe. L’évaluation impliquait dix sujets avec un champ visuel artificiellement restreint Ă  10°, et un sujet avec une vision tubulaire due Ă  un glaucome. Notre dispositif d’assistance a significativement amĂ©liorĂ© l’efficacitĂ© de la recherche visuelle d’un facteur trois. Le dispositif pourrait ĂȘtre facilement intĂ©grĂ© dans des lunettes intelligentes et dĂ©tecter des cibles d’intĂ©rĂȘt, soit sur demande, soit de façon automatique (par ex. les obstacles potentiels), facilitant ainsi, la recherche visuelle et la perception spatiale de l’environnement

    Macroscopic 2D Wigner islands

    In this paper we present new versatile "2D macroscopic Wigner islands" useful to investigate the various behaviors observed in mesoscopic confined systems. Our "Wigner islands" consist of electrostatically-interacting charged balls with millimetric size. We have experimentally determined the ground configurations for systems of N particles (N=1-30) confined in a parabolic potential and checked the influence of the confinement and interacting potentials. The results obtained are compared with the published numerical results.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Prostate screening uptake in Australian BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers

    Men who carry mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 are at increased risk for prostate cancer. However the efficacy of prostate screening in this setting is uncertain and limited data exists on the uptake of prostate screening by mutation carriers. This study prospectively evaluated uptake of prostate cancer screening in a multi-institutional cohort of mutation carriers. Subjects were unaffected male BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, aged 40–69 years, enrolled in the Kathleen Cuningham Consortium for Research into Familial Breast Cancer (kConFab) and who had completed a mailed, self-report follow-up questionnaire 3 yearly after study entry. Of the 75 male carriers in this study, only 26 (35%) had elected to receive their mutation result. Overall, 51 (68%) did not recall having received a recommendation to have prostate screening because of their family history, but 41 (55%) had undergone a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test and 32 (43%) a digital rectal examination (DRE) in the previous 3 years. Those who were aware of their mutation result were more likely to have received a recommendation for prostate screening (43 vs. 6%, p = 0.0001), and to have had a PSA test (77 vs. 43%, p = 0.005) and a DRE (69 vs. 29%, p = 0.001) in the previous 3 years. The majority of unaffected males enrolled in kConFab with a BRCA1/2 mutation have not sought out their mutation result. However, of those aware of their positive mutation status, most have undergone at least one round of prostate screening in the previous 3 years

    Understanding the Results of Multiple Linear Regression: Beyond Standardized Regression Coefficients

    Multiple linear regression (MLR) remains a mainstay analysis in organizational research, yet intercorrelations between predictors (multicollinearity) undermine the interpretation of MLR weights in terms of predictor contributions to the criterion. Alternative indices include validity coefficients, structure coefficients, product measures, relative weights, all-possible-subsets regression, dominance weights, and commonality coefficients. This article reviews these indices, and uniquely, it offers freely available software that (a) computes and compares all of these indices with one another, (b) computes associated bootstrapped confidence intervals, and (c) does so for any number of predictors so long as the correlation matrix is positive definite. Other available software is limited in all of these respects. We invite researchers to use this software to increase their insights when applying MLR to a data set. Avenues for future research and application are discussed

    Mangroves enhance the biomass of coral reef fish communities in the Caribbean

    Mangrove forests are one of the world's most threatened tropical ecosystems with global loss exceeding 35% (ref. 1). Juvenile coral reef fish often inhabit mangroves, but the importance of these nurseries to reef fish population dynamics has not been quantified. Indeed, mangroves might be expected to have negligible influence on reef fish communities: juvenile fish can inhabit alternative habitats and fish populations may be regulated by other limiting factors such as larval supply or fishing. Here we show that mangroves are unexpectedly important, serving as an intermediate nursery habitat that may increase the survivorship of young fish. Mangroves in the Caribbean strongly influence the community structure of fish on neighbouring coral reefs. In addition, the biomass of several commercially important species is more than doubled when adult habitat is connected to mangroves. The largest herbivorous fish in the Atlantic, Scarus guacamaia, has a functional dependency on mangroves and has suffered local extinction after mangrove removal. Current rates of mangrove deforestation are likely to have severe deleterious consequences for the ecosystem function, fisheries productivity and resilience of reefs. Conservation efforts should protect connected corridors of mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs

    TNF deficiency causes alterations in the spatial organization of neurogenic zones and alters the number of microglia and neurons in the cerebral cortex

Although tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors are used to treat chronic inflammatory diseases, there is little information about how long-term inhibition of TNF affects the homeostatic functions that TNF maintains in the intact CNS. To assess whether developmental TNF deficiency causes alterations in the naïve CNS, we estimated the number of proliferating cells, microglia, and neurons in the developing neocortex of E13.5, P7 and adult TNF knock out (TNF−/−) mice and wildtype (WT) littermates. We also measured changes in gene and protein expression and monoamine levels in adult WT and TNF−/− mice. To evaluate long-term effects of TNF inhibitors, we treated healthy adult C57BL/6 mice with either saline, the selective soluble TNF inhibitor XPro1595, or the nonselective TNF inhibitor etanercept. We estimated changes in cell number and protein expression after two months of treatment. We assessed the effects of TNF deficiency on cognition by testing adult WT and TNF−/− mice and mice treated with saline, XPro1595, or etanercept with specific behavioral tasks. TNF deficiency decreased the number of proliferating cells and microglia and increased the number of neurons. At the same time, TNF deficiency decreased the expression of WNT signaling-related proteins, specifically Collagen Triple Helix Repeat Containing 1 (CTHRC1) and Frizzled receptor 6 (FZD6). In contrast to XPro1595, long-term inhibition of TNF with etanercept in adult C57BL/6 mice decreased the number of BrdU+ cells in the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus. Etanercept, but not XPro1595, also impaired spatial learning and memory in the Barnes maze memory test. TNF deficiency impacts the organization of neurogenic zones and alters the cell composition in brain. Long-term inhibition of TNF with the nonselective TNF inhibitor etanercept, but not the soluble TNF inhibitor XPro1595, decreases neurogenesis in the adult mouse hippocampus and impairs learning and memory after two months of treatment

    Adventitial lymphatic capillary expansion impacts on plaque T cell accumulation in atherosclerosis

    During plaque progression, inflammatory cells progressively accumulate in the adventitia, paralleled by an increased presence of leaky vasa vasorum. We here show that next to vasa vasorum, also the adventitial lymphatic capillary bed is expanding during plaque development in humans and mouse models of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, we investigated the role of lymphatics in atherosclerosis progression. Dissection of plaque draining lymph node and lymphatic vessel in atherosclerotic ApoE(-/-)mice aggravated plaque formation, which was accompanied by increased intimal and adventitial CD3(+) T cell numbers. Likewise, inhibition of VEGF-C/D dependent lymphangiogenesis by AAV aided gene transfer of hVEGFR3-Ig fusion protein resulted in CD3(+) T cell enrichment in plaque intima and adventitia. hVEGFR3-Ig gene transfer did not compromise adventitial lymphatic density, pointing to VEGF-C/D independent lymphangiogenesis. We were able to identify the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis, which has previously been shown to indirectly activate VEGFR3, as a likely pathway, in that its focal silencing attenuated lymphangiogenesis and augmented T cell presence. Taken together, our study not only shows profound, partly CXCL12/CXCR4 mediated, expansion of lymph capillaries in the adventitia of atherosclerotic plaque in humans and mice, but also is the first to attribute an important role of lymphatics in plaque T cell accumulation and development.Peer reviewe

    Evaluating the utility of B/Ca ratios in planktic foraminifera as a proxy for the carbonate system: A case study of Globigerinoides ruber

    B/Ca ratios in foraminifera have attracted considerable scientific attention as a proxy for past ocean carbonate system. However, the carbonate system controls on B/Ca ratios are not straightforward, with ?[ inline image] ([ inline image]in situ – [ inline image]at saturation) correlating best with B/Ca ratios in benthic foraminifera, rather than pH, inline image, or inline image (as a simple model of boron speciation in seawater and incorporation into CaCO3 would predict). Furthermore, culture experiments have shown that in planktic foraminifera properties such as salinity and [B]sw can have profound effects on B/Ca ratios beyond those predicted by simple partition coefficients. Here, we investigate the controls on B/Ca ratios in G. ruber via a combination of culture experiments and core-top measurements, and add to a growing body of evidence that suggests B/Ca ratios in symbiont-bearing foraminiferal carbonate are not a straightforward proxy for past seawater carbonate system conditions. We find that while B/Ca ratios in culture experiments covary with pH, in open ocean sediments this relationship is not seen. In fact, our B/Ca data correlate best with [ inline image] (a previously undocumented association) and in most regions, salinity. These findings might suggest a precipitation rate or crystallographic control on boron incorporation into foraminiferal calcite. Regardless, our results underscore the need for caution when attempting to interpret B/Ca records in terms of the ocean carbonate system, at the very least in the case of mixed-layer planktic foraminifera

    Effects of training and albuterol on pain and fatigue in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy

    Contains fulltext : 51802.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)BACKGROUND : We recently reported a randomised controlled trial on the efficacy of strength training and the beta2-adrenergic agonist albuterol in patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Strength training and albuterol appeared safe interventions with limited positive effect on muscle strength and volume. We concurrently explored the prevalence and the characteristics of pain and fatigue in the participating FSHD patients, because these are probably underreported but clinically relevant symptoms in this disorder. Next, we studied the effects of albuterol and strength training on pain, experienced fatigue, health-related functional status and psychological distress. METHODS : Sixty-five patients were randomised to strength training of elbow flexors and ankle dorsiflexors or non-training. After 26 weeks, albuterol (sustained-release, 8 mg bid) was added in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Outcomes comprised self-reported pain, experienced fatigue, functional status and psychological distress obtained with validated questionnaires at 52 weeks. RESULTS : Eighty percent of patients reported chronic persistent or periodic, multifocal pains. Thirty-four percent of the participants were severely fatigued. Strength training and albuterol failed to have a significant effect on all outcomes. CONCLUSIONS : Pain and fatigue are important features in FSHD. Strength training and albuterol do not have a positive or negative effect on pain, experienced fatigue, functional status and psychological distress

    The dangers of using intention as a surrogate for Retention in brand positioning decision support systems

    The purpose of this paper is to explore the dangers of using intention as a surrogate for retention in a decision support system (DSS) for brand positioning. An empirical study is conducted, using structural equations modeling and both data from the internal transactional database and a survey. The study is aimed at evaluating whether the DSS recommends different product benefits for brand positioning when intention is used as opposed to retention as a criterion variable. The results show that different product benefits are recommended contingent upon the criterion variable (intention vs. retention). The findings also indicate that the strength of the structural relationships is inflated when intention is used. This study is limited in that it investigates only one industry; the newspaper industry. This study provides guidance for brand managers in selecting the most appropriate benefit for brand positioning and advices against the use of intention as opposed to retention in DSS. To the best of our knowledge this study is the first to challenge and refute the commonly held belief that intention is a valid surrogate for retention in a DSS for brand positioning
