Microwave energy supplied by a prototype oven prevents the spread of Fusarium wilt during the propagation of melon plantlets by seed

    Get PDF
The re-use of propagation trays in nursery greenhouses is one of the main ways in which fusarium wilt is spread in melon crops (Cucumis melo). The causal agent of the disease is the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis. This paper reports that exposing these seed trays to the energy produced by a prototype microwave oven during the commercial production of melon plantlets can prevent the spread of this pathogen with only a very small increase in production costs

Anomalous Roughening of Viscous Fluid Fronts in Spontaneous Imbibition

    Get PDF
We report experiments on spontaneous imbibition of a viscous fluid by a model porous medium in the absence of gravity. The average position of the interface satisfies Washburn's law. Scaling of the interface fluctuations provides a dynamic exponent z \simeq 3, indicative of global dynamics driven by capillary forces. The complete set of exponents clearly shows that interfaces are not self-affine, exhibiting distinct local and global scaling, both for time (b=0.64\pm 0.02, b* =0.33 \pm 0.03) and space (a=1.94 \pm 0.20, a_loc=0.94 \pm 0.10). These values are compatible with an intrinsic anomalous scaling scenario.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Incidence of Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding in New Users of Low-Dose Aspirin

Background & Aims: There are few data on the incidence of upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB and LGIB) from observational studies of low-dose aspirin users. We aimed to estimate incidence rates of UGIB and LGIB in a large cohort of new users of low-dose aspirin in the United Kingdom, with subanalyses of hospitalization status and fatalities. Methods: We performed a population-based study of 199, 079 new users of low-dose aspirin (median age, 64.0 years) identified from the Health Improvement Network primary care database (2000–2012). Individuals were followed for a median 5.4 years (maximum, 14 years) to identify new cases of UGIB and LGIB. Following multistep validation, we calculated overall and age- and sex-specific incidence rates; we performed subanalyses for health care use and death within 30 days of GIB. We also estimated rates within a matched (1:1) cohort of nonusers of low-dose aspirin at the start of the follow-up period. Results: The low-dose aspirin users had 1115 UGIB events and 1936 LGIB events; most subjects with UGIB events (58.9%) were hospitalized, whereas most subjects with LGIB events were referred to secondary care (72.8%). Crude incidence rates of GIB per 1000 person-years were 0.97 for subjects with UGIB (95% CI, 0.91–1.02) and 1.68 for subjects with LGIB (95% CI, 1.60–1.75). Incidence rates per 1000 person-years for patients hospitalized for GIB were 0.57 for UGIB (95% CI, 0.53–0.61) and 0.45 for LGIB (95% CI, 0.42–0.49); for referred (but not hospitalized) cases, these values were 0.39 for UGIB (95% CI, 0.36–0.43) and 1.22 for LGIB (1.16–1.29). Incidence rates per 1000 person-years were 0.06 for fatal UGIB (95% CI, 0.04–0.07), 0.01 for fatal LGIB (95% CI, 0.01–0.02), 0.91 for nonfatal UGIB (95% CI, 0.86–0.97), and 1.66 for nonfatal LGIB (95% CI, 1.59–1.74). Among nonusers of low-dose aspirin, incidence rates per 1000 person-years were 0.67 (95% CI, 0.63–0.75) for UGIB and 0.76 (95% CI, 0.72–0.82) for LGIB. Conclusion: In a population-based study of low-dose aspirin users, the incidence of LGIB was higher than the incidence of UGIB. However, incidence rates of hospitalized GI bleeds and 30-day mortality rates were lower for LGIB than for UGIB. These estimates are valuable for benefit–risk assessments of low-dose aspirin for cardiovascular and colorectal cancer prevention

Toxicity of pyrolysis gases from synthetic polymers

The screening test method was used to investigate toxicity in polyethylene, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyaryl sulfone, polyether sulfone, polyphenyl sulfone, and polyphenylene sulfide. Changing from a rising temperature program to a fixed temperature program resulted on shorter times to animal responses. This effect was attributed in part to more rapid generation of toxicants. The toxicants from the sulfur containing polymers appeared to act more rapidly than the toxicants from the other polymers. It was not known whether this effect was due primarily to difference in concentration or in the nature of the toxicants. The carbon monoxide concentration found did not account for the results observed with the sulfur containing polymers. Polyphenyl sulfone appeared to exhibit the least toxicity among the sulfur containing polymers evaluated under these test conditions

Within the central Ebro basin, 5681 hecto to kilometric lineaments have been mapped by means a Landsat 5 image with a 2, 4, and 7 bands combination. They belong to two main sets trending NW-SE and WNW-ESE, and two secondary sets trending NNW-SSE and NE-SW. Most of them are normal faults. That lineaments determine sorne of the Quaternary Iandscapes in the area, mainly by its influence in karst, drainage network and slope processes. Actually, that control allows to use those geomorphologic criteria as lineament presence indicators

Controlled nucleation of topological defects in the stripe domain patterns of Lateral multilayers with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy: competition between magnetostatic, exchange and misfit interactions

Magnetic lateral multilayers have been fabricated on weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy amorphous Nd-Co films in order to perform a systematic study on the conditions for controlled nucleation of topological defects within their magnetic stripe domain pattern. A lateral thickness modulation of period ww is defined on the nanostructured samples that, in turn, induces a lateral modulation of both magnetic stripe domain periods λ\lambda and average in-plane magnetization component MinplaneM_{inplane}. Depending on lateral multilayer period and in-plane applied field, thin and thick regions switch independently during in-plane magnetization reversal and domain walls are created within the in-plane magnetization configuration coupled to variable angle grain boundaries and disclinations within the magnetic stripe domain patterns. This process is mainly driven by the competition between rotatable anisotropy (that couples the magnetic stripe pattern to in-plane magnetization) and in-plane shape anisotropy induced by the periodic thickness modulation. However, as the structural period ww becomes comparable to magnetic stripe period λ\lambda, the nucleation of topological defects at the interfaces between thin and thick regions is hindered by a size effect and stripe domains in the different thickness regions become strongly coupled.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review
