Analysis of a space--time hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the advection--diffusion problem on time-dependent domains
This paper presents the first analysis of a space--time hybridizable
discontinuous Galerkin method for the advection--diffusion problem on
time-dependent domains. The analysis is based on non-standard local trace and
inverse inequalities that are anisotropic in the spatial and time steps. We
prove well-posedness of the discrete problem and provide a priori error
estimates in a mesh-dependent norm. Convergence theory is validated by a
numerical example solving the advection--diffusion problem on a time-dependent
domain for approximations of various polynomial degree
Self-consistent pedestal prediction for JET-ILW in preparation of the DT campaign
The self-consistent core-pedestal prediction model of a combination of EPED1 type pedestal prediction and a simple stiff core transport model is able to predict Type I ELMy (edge localized mode) pedestals of a large JET-ILW (ITER-like wall) database at the similar accuracy as is obtained when the experimental global plasma beta is used as input. The neutral penetration model [R. J. Groebner et al., Phys. Plasmas 9, 2134 (2002)] with corrections that take into account variations due to gas fueling and plasma triangularity is able to predict the pedestal density with an average error of 15%. The prediction of the pedestal pressure in hydrogen plasma that has higher core heat diffusivity compared to a deuterium plasma with similar heating and fueling agrees with the experiment when the isotope effect on the stability, the increased diffusivity, and outward radial shift of the pedestal are included in the prediction. However, the neutral penetration model that successfully predicts the deuterium pedestal densities fails to predict the isotope effect on the pedestal density in hydrogen plasmas
Berry phase correction to electron density in solids and "exotic" dynamics
Recent results on the semiclassical dynamics of an electron in a solid are
explained using techniques developed for ``exotic'' Galilean dynamics. The
system is indeed Hamiltonian and Liouville's theorem holds for the symplectic

Properties of the intermediate type of gamma-ray bursts
Gamma-ray bursts can be divided into three groups ("short", "intermediate",
"long") with respect to their durations. The third type of gamma-ray bursts -
as known - has the intermediate duration. We show that the intermediate group
is the softest one. An anticorrelation between the hardness and the duration is
found for this subclass in contrast to the short and long groups.Comment: In Sixteenth Maryland Astrophysics Conferenc
A Principal Component Analysis of the 3B Gamma-Ray Burst Data
We have carried out a principal component analysis for 625 gamma-ray bursts
in the BATSE 3B catalog for which non-zero values exist for the nine measured
variables. This shows that only two out of the three basic quantities of
duration, peak flux and fluence are independent, even if this relation is
strongly affected by instrumental effects, and these two account for 91.6% of
the total information content. The next most important variable is the fluence
in the fourth energy channel (at energies above 320 keV). This has a larger
variance and is less correlated with the fluences in the remaining three
channels than the latter correlate among themselves. Thus a separate
consideration of the fourth channel, and increased attention on the related
hardness ratio appears useful for future studies. The analysis gives the
weights for the individual measurements needed to define a single duration,
peak flux and fluence. It also shows that, in logarithmic variables, the
hardness ratio is significantly correlated with peak flux, while is
significantly anticorrelated with peak flux. The principal component analysis
provides a potentially useful tool for estimating the improvement in
information content to be achieved by considering alternative variables or
