    Defining the Right to Die

Although Friedrich Nietzsche was not noted for his views on medical ethics, the above quotation captures the essence of James Lindgren\u27s article. Lindgren posits that the recent O\u27Connor\u27 and Cruzan decisions signal a shift in the law on the withdrawal or withholding of treatment. He concludes that the requirement set forth in those cases-that an individual must have clearly and convincingly expressed his or her wishes before treatment can be terminated--errs unduly on the side of life. Basing his conclusion primarily on preferences revealed by public opinion polls, he contends that a better rule would be to presume, subject to proof otherwise, that an individual desires death when the individual falls into one or more of fourteen specified categories

    Totally bounded frame quasi-uniformities

summary:This paper considers totally bounded quasi-uniformities and quasi-proximities for frames and shows that for a given quasi-proximity ◃\triangleleft on a frame LL there is a totally bounded quasi-uniformity on LL that is the coarsest quasi-uniformity, and the only totally bounded quasi-uniformity, that determines ◃\triangleleft . The constructions due to B. Banaschewski and A. Pultr of the Cauchy spectrum ψL\psi L and the compactification ℜL\Re L of a uniform frame (L,U)(L, {\bold U}) are meaningful for quasi-uniform frames. If U{\bold U} is a totally bounded quasi-uniformity on a frame LL, there is a totally bounded quasi-uniformity U‟\overline{{\bold U}} on ℜL\Re L such that (ℜL,U‟)(\Re L, \overline{{\bold U}}) is a compactification of (L,U)(L,{\bold U}). Moreover, the Cauchy spectrum of the uniform frame (Fr(U∗),U∗)(Fr({\bold U}^{\ast }), {\bold U}^{\ast }) can be viewed as the spectrum of the bicompletion of (L,U)(L,{\bold U})

Conservation of connectivity of model-space effective interactions under a class of similarity transformation

Effective interaction operators usually act on a restricted model space and give the same energies (for Hamiltonian) and matrix elements (for transition operators etc.) as those of the original operators between the corresponding true eigenstates. Various types of effective operators are possible. Those well defined effective operators have been shown being related to each other by similarity transformation. Some of the effective operators have been shown to have connected-diagram expansions. It is shown in this paper that under a class of very general similarity transformations, the connectivity is conserved. The similarity transformation between hermitian and non-hermitian Rayleigh-Schr\"{o}dinger perturbative effective operators is one of such transformation and hence the connectivity can be deducted from each other.Comment: 12 preprint page

    Astrid Lindgren and the Archives

The author Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002), well-known for the characters Pippi Longstocking, the Brothers Lionheart, Emil and Karlsson-on-the roof, is for many Swedes a genuine national icon. On several occasions, when a list of the most popular and influential Swede has been published, Astrid Lindgren’s name has been prominent. Around the year 2000 many Swedes voted Astrid Lindgren the most important person of the entire 2000 years, something that says much about our often short memory, but more about how popular Astrid Lindgren really is. In the year she turned 90 she was selected as ‘This Year's Swede in the World’ by The Society for Swedes in the World because few Swedes have been so esteemed throughout the world. On receiving the prize she said, ‘You are giving the prize of This Year's Swede in the World to a person who is extremely old, half blind, half deaf and completely mad. We must be careful about spreading this around’ (Törnqvist-Verschuur 2011, p.120)

    Manuscript Selection Anti-Manifesto

Joining a conversation begun by James Lindgren, An Author\u27s Manifesto, 61 U. Chi. L. Rev. 527 (1994), Prof. Tobias discusses the process of submission, review, and editorial work on articles published in student-edited law reviews. An Author\u27s Manifesto (Manifesto) constructively criticizes the amazingly arcane process of law review publication and affords salient suggestions for its improvement. The essay treats two aspects of this process-the selection of manuscripts and the editing of articles which sustain that venerable institution: student-edited law journals. Manifesto regales readers with many terrible tales of travesties which involve article editing but recounts comparatively few sordid stories that implicate manuscript selection. Because more, and more outrageous, abuses attend the wild and wonderful process of choosing articles, this piece focuses on manuscript selection-principally through the lens of my experiences and those of numerous colleagues, friends, and acquaintances. That effort has as much redeeming social value as, and is considerably more fun than, the empirical study of the publication process which Professors Gordon and Lindgren propose. I also have different perspectives than those two professors, as I teach at a law school that U.S. News and World Report recently ranked in the fourth quintile

A new method to optimize with orthonormal constraints is described, where a particular composition of plane (Givens) rotations is used to parameterize decision variables in terms of angles. It is showed that this parameterization is complete and that any orthonormal k-by-nmatrix can be derived to a set of no more than kn-k(k+1) angles. The technique is applied to the emph {feature extraction problem} where a linear subspace is optimized with respect to non-linear objective functions. The Optimal Discriminative Projection (ODP) algorithm is described. ODP is a data compression or feature extraction algorithm that combines powerful model optimization with regularization to avoid over training. The ODP is used primarily for classification problems

    Embodiment and designing learning environments

There is increasing recognition amongst learning sciences researchers of the critical role that the body plays in thinking and reasoning across contexts and across disciplines. This workshop brings ideas of embodied learning and embodied cognition to the design of instructional environments that engage learners in new ways of moving within, and acting upon, the physical world. Using data and artifacts from participants' research and designs as a starting point, this workshop focuses on strategies for how to effectively leverage embodiment in learning activities in both technology and non-technology environments. Methodologies for studying/assessing the body's role in learning are also addressed

The microbiological and chemical composition of baled and precision-chop silages on a sample of farms in County Meath

peer-reviewedA Teagasc Walsh Fellowship awarded to J. McEniry supported this study.Baled and precision-chop silages were examined on a sample of farms in the Irish midlands to determine microbiological and chemical composition at feedout. Silage making practices and chemical composition were similar to those in national surveys. Wilting was an integral part of baled silage production and was reflected in a more restricted fermentation (higher pH and water-soluble carbohydrates, with lower fermentation acids and buffering capacity) compared to precision-chop silage. Yeast numbers were higher in baled silage, suggesting a more aerobic environment within the bale. Although the fermentation appeared similar in the outer and inner horizons of baled silage, yeast, lactic acid bacteria and Enterobacteria numbers were higher in the outer horizon suggesting less exacting anaerobiosis adjacent to the surface of the bale
