    Bt176 corn in poultry nutrition: physiological characteristics and fate of recombinant plant DNA in chickens

    A genetically modified Bt176 corn hybrid, which contains an insecticidal protein against the European corn borer, and its conventional, nonmodified counterpart were evaluated in 4 separate trials to verify substantial equivalence in feeding value and animal performance. Thirty-six individually kept laying hens and 3 replicates of 94 broiler chickens each, assigned to 12 cages, were fed 2 different hen and broiler diets containing either 60% conventional or 60% Bt176 corn. The nutrient compositions of the 2 corn hybrids and the 2 corn diets revealed no major differences. Furthermore, metabolism and performance data revealed no significant differences between the birds that received the conventional, nonmodified corn, and those that received the modified corn diets. The detection of the genetic modification, by PCR, in feed obtained from insect-resistant Bt corn, in tissues and products from animals fed Bt corn is described. In all evaluated chicken tissues of muscle, liver, and spleen, the corn-chloroplast ivr gene fragment was amplified. It can be deduced from these findings and from other studies that the transfer of DNA fragments into the body is a normal process that takes place constantly. Nevertheless, no recombinant plant DNA fragments such as recombinant bla or cry1A(b) fragments could be found.     Chronic brain inflammation leads to a decline in hippocampal NMDA-R1 receptors

    BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation plays a prominent role in the progression of Alzheimer's disease and may be responsible for degeneration in vulnerable regions such as the hippocampus. Neuroinflammation is associated with elevated levels of extracellular glutamate and potentially an enhanced stimulation of glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. This suggests that neurons that express these glutamate receptors might be at increased risk of degeneration in the presence of chronic neuroinflammation. METHODS: We have characterized a novel model of chronic brain inflammation using a slow infusion of lipopolysaccharide into the 4(th )ventricle of rats. This model reproduces many of the behavioral, electrophysiological, neurochemical and neuropathological changes associated with Alzheimer's disease. RESULTS: The current study demonstrated that chronic neuroinflammation is associated with the loss of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, as determined both qualitatively by immunohistochemistry and quantitatively by in vitro binding studies using [(3)H]MK-801, within the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. CONCLUSION: The gradual loss of function of this critical receptor within the temporal lobe region may contribute to some of the cognitive deficits observed in patients with Alzheimer's disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Alzheimer's disease has become a growing socio-economical concern in developing countries where increased life expectancy is leading to large aged populations. While curing Alzheimer's disease or stopping its progression does not appear within reach in a foreseeable future, new therapies capable of delaying the pathogenesis would represent major breakthroughs.</p> <p>Presentation of the hypothesis</p> <p>The growing number of medical benefits of cannabinoids, such as their ability to regulate age-related processes like neuroinflammation, neurogenesis and memory, raise the question of their potential role as a preventive treatment of AD.</p> <p>Testing the hypothesis</p> <p>To test this hypothesis, epidemiological studies on long term, chronic cannabinoid users could enlighten us on the potential benefits of these compounds in normal and pathological ageing processes. Systematic pharmacological (and thus more mechanistic) investigations using animal models of Alzheimer's disease that have been developed would also allow a thorough investigation of the benefits of cannabinoid pharmacotherapy in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.</p> <p>Implications of the hypothesis</p> <p>The chronic administration of non-selective cannabinoids may delay the onset of cognitive deficits in AD patients; this will dramatically reduce the socio-economic burden of AD and improve the quality of life of the patients and their families.</p

    From Curves to Words and Back Again: Geometric Computation of Minimum-Area Homotopy

    Let Ī³\gamma be a generic closed curve in the plane. Samuel Blank, in his 1967 Ph.D. thesis, determined if Ī³\gamma is self-overlapping by geometrically constructing a combinatorial word from Ī³\gamma. More recently, Zipei Nie, in an unpublished manuscript, computed the minimum homotopy area of Ī³\gamma by constructing a combinatorial word algebraically. We provide a unified framework for working with both words and determine the settings under which Blank's word and Nie's word are equivalent. Using this equivalence, we give a new geometric proof for the correctness of Nie's algorithm. Unlike previous work, our proof is constructive which allows us to naturally compute the actual homotopy that realizes the minimum area. Furthermore, we contribute to the theory of self-overlapping curves by providing the first polynomial-time algorithm to compute a self-overlapping decomposition of any closed curve Ī³\gamma with minimum area.Comment: 27 pages, 16 figure

    Variability of selected trace elements of different meat cuts determined by ICP-MS and DRC-ICPMS

    The aim of this study was to determine the levels of cadmium, lead, iron, zinc, selenium, manganese, copper and molybdenum in different cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and foal collected from supermarkets and butcheries in Switzerland. The concentrations of manganese, copper, molybdenum, zinc, iron, selenium, cadmium and lead were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave digestion. Mean values and their respective coefficients of variation were calculated from the measured concentrations. The concentrations found for cadmium and lead ranged from 0.6 to 3.9 Ī¼g/100 g and 1.0 to 2.1 Ī¼g/100 g, respectively. Concentrations ranged between 0.5 and 3.3 mg/100 g for iron, 0.7 and 5.1 mg/100 g for zinc, 9 and 44 Ī¼g/100 g for selenium, 3.1 and 16.7 Ī¼g/100 g for manganese, 0.3 and 132 Ī¼g/100 g for copper and 0.9 and 3.2 Ī¼g/100 g for molybdenum. Differences found for the concentrations in meat from different species as well as between the individual meat cuts were notable for iron, zinc, selenium and copper. Manganese concentrations were found to vary unsystematically within muscles and species. Molybdenum concentrations were higher in chicken meat in comparison with the mammalian meats. The highest coefficients of variation were found for manganese (13% to 142%) and copper (13% to 224%), while the lowest was found for zinc (4% to 45%). This variation is important for the outcome of competition and other plant-plant interactions. Here we compared rates of shoot growth across 44 species from tropical, warm temperate, and cool temperate forests of eastern Australia.2.
