    Expanding Labor Support Education to Nurses Caring for Women in Labor

    The ability to provide emotional and physical support to a patient during one of the most significant moments of her life is a privilege afforded to intrapartum nurses who attend to laboring and delivering mothers. Labor support improves birth outcomes, reduces cesarean birth rates, and decreases anesthesia use. More labor support education needs to be made available to intrapartum nurses. Within the hospital context, this quality improvement (QI) project investigated the effects of educating intrapartum nurses about labor support and providing them with hands-on training. Surveys, including the Self-Efficacy Labor Support Scale, were as given pre- and post-education to evaluate and document knowledge acquisition. These surveys collected quantitative and qualitative data from participants. Project results encourage intrapartum nurses to be educated and trained in evidence-based labor support interventions for maintaining comfort during labor. In doing so, they can provide care that more effectively supports a mother\u27s labor preference

    The Role of Veterinary Medical Librarians in Teaching Information Literacy

    This qualitative study seeks to determine the nature of the instruction librarians provide to veterinary medical students at all 28 United States veterinary colleges. A secondary goal of the study was to determine in what ways and to what extent librarians participated in other instructional activities at their colleges. Over half of the librarians formally taught in one or more courses, predominantly in the first two years of the veterinary curriculum. One presentation per course was most common. Over half of the librarians interviewed stated that evidence-based veterinary medicine was taught at their colleges, and about half of these librarians collaborated with veterinary faculty in this instruction. Many librarians participated in orientation for first-year veterinary students. The librarians also taught instructional sessions for residents, interns, faculty, graduate students, and practicing veterinarians. This study found that librarians teach information literacy skills both formally and informally, but, in general, instruction by librarians was not well integrated into the curriculum. This study advances several recommendations to help veterinary students develop information literacy skills. These include: encourage veterinary faculty and administrators to collaborate more closely with librarians, incorporate a broader array of information literacy skills into assignments, and add a literature evaluation course to the curriculum

    Structural Modeling of Straw Bale Loadbearing Wall

    In Ecuador, there are qualitative and quantitative housing deficits that must be covered with materials that produce seismic-resistant, energy-efficient buildings that do not require a large amount of energy to be produced. Several studies indicate that the answer lies in straw bale structures. However, for these to be considered by designers, aids are needed to facilitate their structural modeling in specialized computer programs. Through literature reviews, the present research proposes a model that adapts the specific structural considerations of straw bale buildings to the tools available in a design program. Resumen En el Ecuador existe un déficit cualitativo y cuantitativo de viviendas que debe ser cubierto con materiales que produzcan edificaciones sismo resistentes, energéticamente eficientes y a la vez que no requieran gran cantidad de energía para ser producidos. Varios estudios señalan que la respuesta está en las estructuras elaboradas con fardos de paja. Sin embargo, para que éstas sean consideradas por los diseñadores son necesarias ayudas para facilitar su modelamiento estructural en programas informáticos especializados. La presente investigación, a través de revisiones bibliográficas, propone un modelo que adapta las consideraciones estructurales específicas de las construcciones con fardos de paja a las herramientas disponibles en un programa de diseño.     Evaluación de tecnologías de manejo de arvenses en el cultivo de la caña de azúcar

    La versión impresa del vol. 35 (2015) publicó juntos los nos. 1 y 2.p.1-11La investigación se desarrolló en áreas de producción de la Empresa Azucarera Majibacoa de la provincia Las Tunas, Cuba; para hacer una evaluación económica, energética y ambiental de tecnologías de manejo de arvenses en caña planta de primavera quedada, en un suelo del tipo vertisol. En el área experimental se trazaron parcelas, según un diseño de bloques al azar con cuatro réplicas, se evaluaron nueve tecnologías, donde se combinaron el control mecánico y el químico, se utilizó la limpia manual, la tracción animal, el cultivo mecanizado y como medios de aplicación de herbicidas, máquina y asperjadora manual. A las diferentes tecnologías se le determinó utilidades económicas, eficiencia energética, carga contaminante hacia la atmósfera y efectos sobre la compactación del suelo a través de la resistencia a la penetración. Se obtuvo que las tecnologías más eficientes de modo general resultaron aquellas que incluyeron el herbicida Isoxaflutol, donde se utilizó menor cantidad de pases de implementos agrícolas y aplicaciones de herbicidas

    DEVELOPMENT OF A NUMERICAL MODEL FOR THE STUDY OF AN OSCILLATING WATER COLUMN DEVICE CONSIDERING AN IMPULSE TURBINE

    The present work brings a numerical study of an energy conversion device which takes energy from the waves through an oscillating water column (OWC), considering an impulse turbine with rotation in the chimney region through the implementation of a movable mesh model. More precisely, a turbulent, transient and incompressible air flow is numerically simulated in a two-dimensional domain, which mimics an OWC device chamber. The objectives are the verification of the numerical model with movable mesh of the impulse turbine in the free domain from the comparison with the literature and, later, the study of the impulse turbine inserted in the geometry of the OWC device. In order to perform the numerical simulation on the generated domains, the Finite Volume Method (FVM) is used to solve the mass and momentum conservation equations. For the closure of the turbulence, the URANS (Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) model k-ω SST is used. To verify the numerical model employed, drag coefficients, lift, torque and power are obtained and compared with studies in the literature. The simulations are performed considering a flow with a Reynolds number of ReD = 867,000, air as the working fluid and a tip speed ratio of λ = 2. For the verification case, coefficients similar to those previously predicted in the literature were obtained. For the case where the OWC device was inserted it was possible to observe an intensification of the field of velocities in the turbine region, which led to an augmentation in the magnitude of all coefficients investigated (drag, lift, torque and power). For the case studied with the tip velocity ratio λ = 2, results indicated that power coefficient was augmented, indicating that the insertion of the turbine in a closed enclosure can benefit the energy conversion in an OWC device

    Examination of Several Physiological and Psychosocial Factors Potentially Associated With Masked Hypertension Among Low-Risk Adults

    We examined the association of factors in addition to prehypertensive office blood pressure (BP) level that might improve detection of masked hypertension (MH, defined as non-elevated office BP with elevated out-of-office BP average) among those otherwise at low-risk. This sample of 340 untreated adults 30 years and older with office BP average <140/90 mmHg all had two sets of paired office BP measurements and 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) sessions one week apart. Other than BP levels, the only factors that were associated (at P<0.10) with MH at both sets were male sex (75% vs 66%) and working outside the home (72% vs 59% first set; 71% vs 45% second set). Adding these variables to BP level in the model did not appreciably improve detection of MH. We found no demographic, clinical, or psychosocial measures that improved upon prehypertension as a potential predictor of MH in this sample
