    Selbstorganisierte Strukturen in planaren Gasentladungssystemen mit dielektrischer Barriere

    In dieser Arbeit wird ein planares, dielektrisches Barrierenentladungssystem untersucht, dessen laterale Ausdehnung groß gegenüber dem Entladungsabstand ist. In solchen Systemen wird eine laterale, selbstorganisierte Strukturierung der Stromdichte beobachtet. Der erste Teil der Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über die bisher gefundenen Strukturen. Die experimentellen Untersuchungen, die im zweiten Teil der Arbeit vorgestellt werden, befassen sich mit der Strukturierung des homogenen Entladungsgebietes, mit der Dynamik einzelner Filamente und mit Turing-artigen Bifurkationen. Außderdem werden ein Aufbau zur ortsaufgelösten Messung von Oberflächenladungen in der laufenden Entladung beschrieben und die erhaltenen Ergebnisse vorgestellt. Der dritte Teil der Arbeit zeigt numerischen Untersuchungen, die auf zwei- und dreidimensionalem Grundgebiet durchgeführt werden. Es können die Strukturierung der Entladung und der Mechanismus zur Stabilisierung eines Filamentes nachvollzogen werden

    Describes a conceptual model of a generic system of Competitive Intelligence (Cl) and proposes a method for implanting Cl systems within the organizations, according to a corporate outlook, embracing six stages: a) analysis of the preliminary proposal at the Corporate Coordination level; b) analysis and validation of the preliminary proposal; c) realization of seminars to capture the attention of the Senior Administrators; d) development of a pilot-project (corporate level); e) assessment of the results of the pilot-project and validation of the conceptual model; f) elaboration, analysis and approval of the Plan for implementation of the competitive intelligence system. The conclusion is that the organizations generate and use knowlege about the environment they act in, suggesting that the competitive intelligence methodologies and techniques supply the instruments needed for them to maintain their competitive advantage yielding benefits for the society in general.Descreve um modelo conceitual de um sistema genérico de IC e propõe-se um método para implantação de sistemas de IC nas organizações, dentro de uma visão corporativa, contemplando seis etapas: a) análise da proposta preliminar no nível da Coordenação Corporativa; b) análise e validação da proposta preliminar; c) realização de seminário(s) de sensibilização para a alta Administração; d) execução de um projeto-piloto (nível corporativo); e) avaliação dos resultados do projeto-piloto e validação do modelo conceitual; f) elaboração, análise e aprovação do Plano de Implantação do Sistema de Inteligência Competitiva.     Dynamic noise, chaos and parameter estimation in population biology

    We revisit the parameter estimation framework for population biological dynamical systems, and apply it to calibrate various models in epidemiology with empirical time series, namely influenza and dengue fever. When it comes to more complex models such as multi-strain dynamics to describe the virus–host interaction in dengue fever, even the most recently developed parameter estimation techniques, such as maximum likelihood iterated filtering, reach their computational limits. However, the first results of parameter estimation with data on dengue fever from Thailand indicate a subtle interplay between stochasticity and the deterministic skeleton. The deterministic system on its own already displays complex dynamics up to deterministic chaos and coexistence of multiple attractors

    Quasi-Neutral theory of epidemic outbreaks

    Some epidemics have been empirically observed to exhibit outbreaks of all possible sizes, i.e., to be scalefree or scale-invariant. Different explanations for this finding have been put forward; among them there is a model for "accidental pathogens" which leads to power-law distributed outbreaks without apparent need of parameter fine tuning. This model has been claimed to be related to self-organized criticality, and its critical properties have been conjectured to be related to directed percolation. Instead, we show that this is a (quasi) neutral model, analogous to those used in Population Genetics and Ecology, with the same critical behavior as the voter-model, i.e. the theory of accidental pathogens is a (quasi)-neutral theory.     Surface electrons at plasma walls

    In this chapter we introduce a microscopic modelling of the surplus electrons on the plasma wall which complements the classical description of the plasma sheath. First we introduce a model for the electron surface layer to study the quasistationary electron distribution and the potential at an unbiased plasma wall. Then we calculate sticking coefficients and desorption times for electron trapping in the image states. Finally we study how surplus electrons affect light scattering and how charge signatures offer the possibility of a novel charge measurement for dust grains.Comment: To appear in Complex Plasmas: Scientific Challenges and Technological Opportunities, Editors: M.     Smoking and health-related quality of life in English general population: Implications for economic evaluations

Methods: Using the 2006 round of Health Survey for England data (n = 13,241), this paper aims to examine the impact of smoking status on health-related quality of life in English population. Depending upon the nature of the EQ-5D data (i.e. tariff or domains), linear or logistic regression models were fitted to control for biology, clinical conditions, socio-economic background and lifestyle factors that an individual may have regardless of their smoking status. Age- and gender-specific predicted values according to smoking status are offered as the potential 'utility' values to be used in future economic evaluation models. Results: The observed difference of 0.1100 in EQ-5D scores between never-smokers (0.8839) and heavy-smokers (0.7739) reduced to 0.0516 after adjusting for biological, clinical, lifestyle and socioeconomic conditions. Heavy-smokers, when compared with never-smokers, were significantly more likely to report some/severe problems in all five domains - mobility (67%), self-care (70%), usual activity (42%), pain/discomfort (46%) and anxiety/depression (86%) -. 'Utility' values by age and gender for each category of smoking are provided to be used in the future economic evaluations. Conclusion: Smoking is significantly and negatively associated with health-related quality of life in English general population and the magnitude of this association is determined by the number of cigarettes smoked. The varying degree of this association, captured through instruments such as EQ-5D, may need to be fed into the design of future economic evaluations where the intervention being evaluated affects (e.g. tobacco control) or is affected (e.g. treatment for lung cancer) by individual's (or patients') smoking status

    Severe influenza cases in paediatric intensive care units in Germany during the pre-pandemic seasons 2005 to 2008

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Data on complications in children with seasonal influenza virus infection are limited. We initiated a nation-wide three-year surveillance of children who were admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with severe seasonal influenza.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From October 2005 to July 2008, active surveillance was performed using an established reporting system for rare diseases (ESPED) including all paediatric hospitals in Germany. Cases to be reported were hospitalized children < 17 years of age with laboratory-confirmed influenza treated in a PICU or dying in hospital.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Twenty severe influenza-associated cases were reported from 14 PICUs during three pre-pandemic influenza seasons (2005-2008). The median age of the patients (12 males/8 females) was 7.5 years (range 0.1-15 years). None had received vaccination against influenza. In 14 (70%) patients, the infection had been caused by influenza A and in five (25%) by influenza B; in one child (5%) the influenza type was not reported. Patients spent a median of 19 (IQR 12-38) days in the hospital and a median of 11 days (IQR 6-18 days) in the PICU; 10 (50%) needed mechanical ventilation. Most frequent diagnoses were influenza-associated pneumonia (60%), bronchitis/bronchiolitis (30%), encephalitis/encephalopathy (25%), secondary bacterial pneumonia (25%), and ARDS (25%). Eleven (55%) children had chronic underlying medical conditions, including 8 (40%) with chronic pulmonary diseases. Two influenza A- associated deaths were reported: <it>i) </it>an 8-year old boy with pneumococcal encephalopathy following influenza infection died from cerebral edema, <it>ii) </it>a 14-year-old boy with asthma bronchiale, cardiac malformation and Addison's disease died from cardiac and respiratory failure. For nine (45%) patients, possibly permanent sequelae were reported (3 neurological, 3 pulmonary, 3 other sequelae).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Influenza-associated pneumonia and secondary bacterial infections are relevant complications of seasonal influenza in Germany. The incidence of severe influenza cases in PICUs was relatively low. This may be either due to the weak to moderate seasonal influenza activity during the years 2005 to 2008 or due to under-diagnosis of influenza by physicians. Fifty% of the observed severe cases might have been prevented by following the recommendations for vaccination of risk groups in Germany.</p

    Fluorescent Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Layers against Sialic Acid on Silica-Coated Polystyrene Cores-Assessment of the Binding Behavior to Cancer Cells

    Simple Summary Cancer cells often have aberrant sialic acid expression. We used molecularly imprinted polymers in this study as novel tools for analyzing sialic acid expression as a biomarker on cancer cells. The sialic acid imprinted polymer shell was synthesized on a polystyrene core, providing low-density support for improving the suspension stability and scattering properties of the molecularly imprinted particles compared to previous core-shell formats. Our results show that these particles have an increased ability to bind to cancer cells. The binding of these particles may be inhibited by two different pentavalent sialic acid conjugates, pointing to the specificity of the sialic acid imprinted particles. Sialic acid (SA) is a monosaccharide usually linked to the terminus of glycan chains on the cell surface. It plays a crucial role in many biological processes, and hypersialylation is a common feature in cancer. Lectins are widely used to analyze the cell surface expression of SA. However, these protein molecules are usually expensive and easily denatured, which calls for the development of alternative glycan-specific receptors and cell imaging technologies. In this study, SA-imprinted fluorescent core-shell molecularly imprinted polymer particles (SA-MIPs) were employed to recognize SA on the cell surface of cancer cell lines. The SA-MIPs improved suspensibility and scattering properties compared with previously used core-shell SA-MIPs. Although SA-imprinting was performed using SA without preference for the alpha 2,3- and alpha 2,6-SA forms, we screened the cancer cell lines analyzed using the lectins Maackia Amurensis Lectin I (MAL I, alpha 2,3-SA) and Sambucus Nigra Lectin (SNA, alpha 2,6-SA). Our results show that the selected cancer cell lines in this study presented a varied binding behavior with the SA-MIPs. The binding pattern of the lectins was also demonstrated. Moreover, two different pentavalent SA conjugates were used to inhibit the binding of the SA-MIPs to breast, skin, and lung cancer cell lines, demonstrating the specificity of the SA-MIPs in both flow cytometry and confocal fluorescence microscopy. We concluded that the synthesized SA-MIPs might be a powerful future tool in the diagnostic analysis of various cancer cells.</p
