    RESUMEN: El propósito de este escrito es avanzar en la lectura del proceso de salud-enfermedad en clave territorial. La teorización sobre el vínculo salud y ambiente debe extenderse desde las tipologías médicas, y su énfasis en la distribución del riesgos ambientales (físico, biológico, químico), hacia el reconocimiento de la producción social y subjetiva de los territorios. Para avanzar en esta teorización la salud pública debe enriquecerse con la integración de nociones propias de las ciencias sociales como la apropiación del espacio, territorio-territorialidades y lugares. Además, ha de orientarse desde una mirada escalar hacia los microterritorios, pues es en el escenario de los territorios locales y en los lugares cotidianos de la vida, donde se concretan los modos de vivir, de enfermar y de construir salud

    Transforming growth factor beta signaling: The master sculptor of fingers

    Transforming growth factor beta (TGF?) constitutes a large and evolutionarily conserved superfamily of secreted factors that play essential roles in embryonic development, cancer, tissue regeneration, and human degenerative pathology. Studies of this signaling cascade in the regulation of cellular and tissue changes in the three-dimensional context of a developing embryo have notably advanced in the understanding of the action mechanism of these growth factors. In this review, we address the role of TGF? signaling in the developing limb, focusing on its essential function in the morphogenesis of the autopod. As we discuss in this work, modern mouse genetic experiments together with more classical embryological approaches in chick embryos, provided very valuable information concerning the role of TGF? and Activin family members in the morphogenesis of the digits of tetrapods, including the formation of phalanxes, digital tendons, and interphalangeal joints. We emphasize the importance of the Activin and TGF? proteins as digit inducing factors and their critical interaction with the BMP signaling to sculpt the hand and foot morphology

    Effects of Anacetrapib in Patients with Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease

    BACKGROUND: Patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease remain at high risk for cardiovascular events despite effective statin-based treatment of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. The inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) by anacetrapib reduces LDL cholesterol levels and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. However, trials of other CETP inhibitors have shown neutral or adverse effects on cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 30,449 adults with atherosclerotic vascular disease who were receiving intensive atorvastatin therapy and who had a mean LDL cholesterol level of 61 mg per deciliter (1.58 mmol per liter), a mean non-HDL cholesterol level of 92 mg per deciliter (2.38 mmol per liter), and a mean HDL cholesterol level of 40 mg per deciliter (1.03 mmol per liter). The patients were assigned to receive either 100 mg of anacetrapib once daily (15,225 patients) or matching placebo (15,224 patients). The primary outcome was the first major coronary event, a composite of coronary death, myocardial infarction, or coronary revascularization. RESULTS: During the median follow-up period of 4.1 years, the primary outcome occurred in significantly fewer patients in the anacetrapib group than in the placebo group (1640 of 15,225 patients [10.8%] vs. 1803 of 15,224 patients [11.8%]; rate ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval, 0.85 to 0.97; P=0.004). The relative difference in risk was similar across multiple prespecified subgroups. At the trial midpoint, the mean level of HDL cholesterol was higher by 43 mg per deciliter (1.12 mmol per liter) in the anacetrapib group than in the placebo group (a relative difference of 104%), and the mean level of non-HDL cholesterol was lower by 17 mg per deciliter (0.44 mmol per liter), a relative difference of -18%. There were no significant between-group differences in the risk of death, cancer, or other serious adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease who were receiving intensive statin therapy, the use of anacetrapib resulted in a lower incidence of major coronary events than the use of placebo.     Multitemporal analysis of NDVI and land surface temperature for modeling the probability of forest fire occurrence in central Mexico

    Forest fire induce drastic, and sometimes extensive changes in the landscape. Data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) operated by NOAA have been used in several studies of forest fire. Their features allow detection of active fires as hot-spots, the monitoring of vegetation condition, and estimation of land surface temperature (LST). Multitemporal analysis of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and LST calculated from NOAA-AVHRR14 in the course of the four months (November to February) previous to the fire seasons (March to May) for the period 1996-2000 allowed to identify a set of the dynamic predictive variables by constructing a logistic model to assess the risk of forest fire over the central region of Mexico. Actual forest fires were detected as hot-spots on nighttime NOAA-AVHRR 14 images from the four fire seasons (March to May) from 1997 to 2000. In addition, elevation, aspect, slope, vegetation type, and precipitation were selected as the static predictive variables of the model. The data base included 846 fires, and 869 random non-fire points from 1997-1999. During 2000 There were 143 forest fires, which were used to assess the accuracy of the model

    Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-14 imagery was used to analyse changes in land surface temperature in an area of Central Mexico during the course of each dry season (November-April) for the period 1996-2000. Daily surface temperature was obtained by the split-window method and cloud-free monthly composites were subsequently built. This value was related to maximum air temperatures recorded at meteorological stations and to forest fires detected from night-time images. During 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 (El Nino) dry seasons, monthly surface temperature ranged from 35degreesC to 46degreesC and from 33degreesC to 51degreesC, respectivel

    Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes chronic atrophic gastritis and peptic ulcers and it has been associated with the development of gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). One of the more remarkable characteristics of H. pylori is its ability to survive in the hostile environment of the stomach. H. pylori regulates the expression of specific sets of genes allowing it to survive high acidity levels and nutrient scarcity. In the present study, we determined the expression of virulence associated protein D (VapD) of H. pylori inside adenocarcinoma gastric (AGS) cells and in gastric biopsies. Using qRT-PCR, VapD expression was quantified in intracellular H. pylori-AGS cell cultures at different time points and in gastric mucosa biopsies from patients suffering from chronic atrophic gastritis, follicular gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastritis precancerous intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma. Our results show that vapD of H. pylori presented high transcription levels inside AGS cells, which increased up to two-fold above basal values across all assays over time. Inside AGS cells, H. pylori acquired a coccoid form that is metabolically active in expressing VapD as a protection mechanism, thereby maintaining its permanence in a viable non-cultivable state. VapD of H. pylori was expressed in all gastric biopsies, however, higher expression levels (p = 0.029) were observed in gastric antrum biopsies from patients with follicular gastritis. The highest VapD expression levels were found in both antrum and corpus gastric biopsies from older patients (>57 years old). We observed that VapD in H. pylori is a protein that is only produced in response to interactions with eukaryotic cells. Our results suggest that VapD contributes to the persistence of H. pylori inside the gastric epithelial cells, protecting the microorganism from the intracellular environment, reducing its growth rate, enabling long-term infection and treatment resistance
