Understanding phase contrast artefacts in micro computed absorption tomography

    Get PDF
Phase contrast imaging is a technique which captures objects with little or no light absorption. This is possible due to the wave nature of light, i.e., diffraction. In computerised tomography, the aim is most often to reconstruct the light absorption property of objects but many objects can not be imaged without obtaining a mix of both absorption and phase, this is especially true for weakly absorbing objects at high resolution. Hence, phase contrast is usually considered an unwanted artefact which should be removed. Traditionally this is done directly on the projection data prior to the filtered back projection algorithm and the filter settings are derived from the physical setup of the imaging device. In this paper we show how these operations can be carried out on the reconstructed data, without access to the projection images, which yields much flexibility over previous approaches. Especially, filtering can be applied to small regions of interest which simplifies fine tuning of parameters, and some low pass filtering can be avoided which is inherent in previous methods. We will also show the filter parameters can be estimated from step edges in the reconstructed images

Furthermore, a full numerical calculation is given for the radiative tail, corresponding with photon emission processes, where the photon energy is not very small compared with the lepton momenta. We compare our results with existing works on elastic electron-proton scattering, and show for the e p \to e p \gamma$ reaction how the observables are modified due to these first order QED radiative corrections. We show results for both unpolarized and polarized observables of the virtual Compton scattering in the low energy region (where one is sensitive to the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon), as well as for the deeply virtual Compton scattering

Ultrasound stimulus to enhance the bone regeneration capability of gelatin cryogels

    Get PDF
In the present study, gelatin-based cryogels have been seeded with human SAOS-2 osteoblasts. In order to overcome the drawbacks associated with in vitro culture systems, such as limited diffusion and inhomogeneous cell-matrix distribution, this work describes the application of ultrasounds (average power, 149 mW; frequency, 1.5 MHz) to physically enhance the cell culture in vitro. The results indicate that the physical stimulation of cell-seeded gelatin-based cryogels upregulates the bone matrix production

Shape analysis of the StW 578 calotte from Jacovec Cavern, Gauteng (South Africa)

    Get PDF
The fossiliferous deposits within the lower-lying Jacovec Cavern in the locality of Sterkfontein yielded valuable hominin remains, including the StW 578 specimen. Because StW 578 mainly preserves the calotte, the taxonomic status of this specimen has been a matter of discussion. Within this context, here we employed high-resolution microtomography and a landmark-free registration method to explore taxonomically diagnostic features in the external surface of the StW 578 calotte. Our comparative sample included adult humans and common chimpanzees as well as one Australopithecus africanus specimen (Sts 5). We partially restored the StW 578 calotte digitally and compared it to extant specimens and Sts 5 using a landmark-free registration based on smooth and invertible surface deformation. Our comparative shape analysis reveals morphological differences with extant humans, especially in the frontal bones, and with extant chimpanzees, as well as intriguing specificities in the morphology of the StW 578 parietal bones. Lastly, our study suggests morphological proximity between StW 578 and Sts 5. Given the intimate relationship between the brain and the braincase, as well as the integration of the hominin face and neurocranium, we suggest that cranial vault shape differences between StW 578 and extant humans, if confirmed by further analyses, could be either explained by differences in brain surface morphology or in the face. Besides providing additional information about the morphology of the Jacovec calotte that will be useful in future taxonomic discussion, this study introduces a new protocol for the landmark-free analysis of fossil hominin cranial shape.Significance:• We provide further information on the enigmatic fossil specimen StW 578.• We introduce a new approach for the morphological study of fossil hominin crania.• We highlight morphological similarities between StW 578 and ‘Mrs Ples’

Monte Carlo simulation of virtual Compton scattering below pion threshold

    Get PDF
This paper describes the Monte Carlo simulation developed specifically for the VCS experiments below pion threshold that have been performed at MAMI and JLab. This simulation generates events according to the (Bethe-Heitler + Born) cross section behaviour and takes into account all relevant resolution-deteriorating effects. It determines the `effective' solid angle for the various experimental settings which are used for the precise determination of photon electroproduction absolute cross section.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, A One author adde

Antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis in housed laying-hen flocks in Europe

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to determine the potential association between housing type and multiple drug resistance (MDR) in Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis isolates recovered from 283 laying-hen flocks. In each flock, a cloacal swab from four hens was collected and produced 1102 E. coli and 792 E. faecalis isolates. Broth microdilution was used to test susceptibility to antimicrobials. Country and housing type interacted differently with the MDR levels of both species. In the E. coli model, housing in a raised-floor system was associated with an increased risk of MDR compared to the conventional battery system [odds ratio (OR) 2·12, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·13-3·97)]. In the E. faecalis model the MDR levels were lower in free-range systems than in conventional battery cages (OR 0·51, 95% CI 0·27-0·94). In Belgium, ceftiofur-resistant E. coli isolates were more numerous than in the other countrie

Photofission and Quasi-Deuteron-Nuclear State as Mixing of Bosons and Fermions

    Get PDF
The empirical-phenomenological quasi-deuteron photofission description is theoretically justified within the semiclassical, intermediate statistics model. The transmutational fermion (nucleon) - boson (quasi-deuteron) potential plays an essential role in the present context and is expressed in terms of thermodynamical and of microscopical quantities, analogous to those commonly used in the superfluid nuclear model.Comment: 7 pages, RevTex, to appear in Zeit. f. Measurement of the Beam-Recoil Polarization in Low-Energy Virtual Compton Scattering from the Proton

    Get PDF
Double-polarization observables in the reaction epepγ\vec{e}p \rightarrow e'\vec{p'}\gamma{} have been measured at Q2=0.33(GeV/c)2Q^2=0.33 (GeV/c)^2. The experiment was performed at the spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration using the 855 MeV polarized electron beam provided by the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) and a recoil proton polarimeter. From the double-polarization observables the structure function PLTP_{LT}^\perp is extracted for the first time, with the value (15.4±3.3(stat.)2.4+1.5(syst.))GeV2(-15.4 \pm 3.3 (stat.)^{+1.5}_{-2.4} (syst.)) GeV^{-2}, using the low-energy theorem for Virtual Compton Sattering. This structure function provides a hitherto unmeasured linear combination of the generalized polarizabilities of the proton
