    Accounting Editorial Board Membership And Research Output

    The primary purpose of this article is to examine whether the university affiliation of  faculty members on the editorial boards of three  top academic accounting journals is related to the university affiliation of the faculty that publish in these journals.  The journals selected – The Accounting Review (AR); The Journal of Accounting Research (JAR); and, Accounting, Organizations and Society (AOS), were identified by Chan, et al. (2009) as the top three accounting research journals. The board members (as of January 1, 2007) of these three journals were categorized by university affiliation (both current employer and doctoral-degree granting), and cross referenced with the authors (including co-authors) of all main articles published in these three journals during the calendar years of 2007-2009.  The results indicate that the majority of the authors at JAR and AOS had academic affiliations different from the editorial board members. In the AR, however, over 60% of the authors had the same academic affiliations as the 101 members of the AR editorial review board.  Secondary results provide that a small handful of university affiliations dominate the U.S.-based journal boards, however this connection was not as strong in the non-U.S. AOS.   Overall, less than 11% of AACSB accredited business programs are represented on these collective boards, although AACSB accounting specific accreditation does increase this ratio to a 14% representation.

    Magpie: towards a semantic web browser

    Web browsing involves two tasks: finding the right web page and then making sense of its content. So far, research has focused on supporting the task of finding web resources through ‘standard’ information retrieval mechanisms, or semantics-enhanced search. Much less attention has been paid to the second problem. In this paper we describe Magpie, a tool which supports the interpretation of web pages. Magpie offers complementary knowledge sources, which a reader can call upon to quickly gain access to any background knowledge relevant to a web resource. Magpie automatically associates an ontologybased semantic layer to web resources, allowing relevant services to be invoked within a standard web browser. Hence, Magpie may be seen as a step towards a semantic web browser. The functionality of Magpie is illustrated using examples of how it has been integrated with our lab’s web resources

    Ethnicity and culture impact every person in both overt and subtle ways. At a very young age, children develop a sense of who they are and begin to construct meaning regarding their heritage, families, and communities. Research shows that children form ‘pre-prejudices’ that are set firmly in place by the age of eight. Evidence also suggests that parents and teachers need tools to provide children with the support they need to build a positive self-identity and an appreciation for others. Through collections, cultural artifacts, artistic masterpieces and everyday objects, museums are in a unique position to provide teachers and parents with important information that helps children gain insight about themselves and others from around the world

    The views of older women towards mammographic screening: a qualitative and quantitative study

    Purpose: Mammographic screening has improved breast cancer survival in the screened age group. This improved survival has not been seen in older women (>70 years) where screening uptake is low. This study explores the views, knowledge and attitudes of older women towards screening. Methods: Women (>70) were interviewed about breast screening. Interview findings informed the development of a questionnaire which was sent to 1000 women (>70) to quantify their views regarding screening. Results: Twenty-six women were interviewed and a questionnaire designed. The questionnaire response rate was 48.3% (479/992). Over half (52.9%, 241/456) of respondents were unaware they could request mammography by voluntary self-referral and were unaware of how to arrange this. Most (81.5% 383/470) had not attended breast screening since turning 70. Most (75.6%, 343/454) felt screening was beneficial and would attend if invited. Most, (90.1%, 412/457) felt screening should be offered to all women regardless of age or health. Conclusions: There is a lack of knowledge about screening in older women. The majority felt that invitation to screening should be extended to the older age group regardless of age or health. The current under-utilised system of voluntary self referral is not supported by older women

    Local coherence and the temporal development of second harmonic emission

    In a variety of mesoscopically disordered systems, high levels of optical excitation resulting from pulsed laser irradiation can establish optical coherence within separate particles or locally ordered domains, leading to second harmonic emission whose temporal signature characterizes the decay of the excited state population. Examples of such systems will include colloids, cell and membrane suspensions, and many plastics, glasses and other modern materials. With pulsed excitation of sufficient intensity to elicit the onset of saturation, second harmonic emission on the throughput of a subsequent probe beam exhibits a characteristic decay and recovery. Detailed calculations show that such features arise not only in systems whose optical response involves two discrete levels, but also in systems of considerably greater electronic complexity. Deconvolution of the temporal trace of the harmonic signal serves as an independent means of monitoring the decay of the excited state. The extent of recovery in the harmonic signal also serves to register the extent of local coherence, and hence in many systems the localization of structural order. Finally, the principles introduced in the theory are shown to be applicable to other types of system such as certain photochromic materials

    2016+112: A Gravitationally Lensed Type-II Quasar

    A single-screen model of the gravitational lens system 2016+112 is proposed, that explains recent Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) infrared (NICMOS-F160W) observations and new high-resolution European VLBI Network (EVN) 5-GHz radio observations, presented in this paper. In particular, we find that a massive `dark' structure at the lens position, previously suggested by X-ray, optical and spectroscopic observations of the field around 2016+112, is not necessarily required to accommodate the strong lensing constraints. A massive structure to the north-west of the lens system, suggested from a weak-lensing analysis of the field, is included in the model. The lensed source is an X-ray bright active galaxy at z=3.273 with a central bright optical continuum core and strong narrow emission lines, suggestive of a type-II quasar. The EVN 5-GHz radio maps show a radio-jet structure with at least two compact subcomponents. We propose that the diamond caustic crosses the counter-jet of the radio source, so that part of the counter-jet, host galaxy and narrow-line emission regions are quadruply imaged. The remainder of the radio source, including the core, is doubly imaged. Our lens model predicts a very high magnification (mu~300) at the bightness peaks of the inner two radio components of complex C. If the jet exhibits relativistic velocities on micro-arsecond scales, it might result in apparent hyperluminal motion. However, the lack of strong radio variability and the peaked radio spectrum imply that these motions need not be present in the source. Our model furthermore implies that the optical spectrum of C' can only show features of the AGN and its host galaxy.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by MNRAS; minor change

    The role of luminous substructure in the gravitational lens system MG 2016+112

    MG 2016+112 is a quadruply imaged lens system with two complete images A and B and a pair of merging partial images in region C as seen in the radio. The merging images are found to violate the expected mirror symmetry. This indicates an astrometric anomaly which could only be of gravitational origin and could arise due to substructure in the environment or line-of-sight of the lens galaxy. We present new high resolution multi-frequency VLBI observations at 1.7, 5 and 8.4 GHz. Three new components are detected in the new VLBI imaging of both the lensed images A and B. The expected opposite parity of the lensed images A and B was confirmed due to the detection of non-collinear components. Furthermore, the observed properties of the newly detected components are inconsistent with the predictions of previous mass models. We present new scenarios for the background quasar which are consistent with the new observations. We also investigate the role of the satellite galaxy situated at the same redshift as the main lensing galaxy. Our new mass models demonstrate quantitatively that the satellite galaxy is the primary cause of the astrometric anomaly found in region C. The detected satellite is consistent with the abundance of subhaloes expected in the halo from cold dark matter (CDM) simulations. However, the fraction of the total halo mass in the satellite as computed from lens modeling is found to be higher than that predicted by CDM simulations.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted with minor revisions in the text including corrected sign of the shear and improved figure
