Effect of surface stiffness on the neural control of stretch-shortening cycle movements
Aim: It is accepted that leg stiffness (Kleg) increases when surface stiffness decreases, and vice versa. However, little is known how the central nervous system fulfils this task. To understand the effect of surface stiffness on the neural control of stretch-shortening cycle movements, this study aimed to compare modulation of spinal and corticospinal excitability at distinct phases after ground contact during two-legged hopping when changing from solid to elastic ground.Methods: Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and H-reflexes were elicited at the time of the short (SLR)-, medium (MLR)- and long (LLR)-latency responses of the soleus muscle (SOL) during two-legged hopping on different stiffness surfaces, elastic and stiff.Results: Soleus H-reflexes during two-legged hopping on the elastic surface were lower at SLR and larger at LLR than on the stiff surface (P < 0.05 for both comparisons). SOL MEP size was higher at the time of SLR during hopping on the elastic surface than on the stiff surface (P < 0.05) although the background EMG was similar.Conclusion: It is argued that this phase-specific adaptation in spinal reflex excitability is functionally relevant to adjust leg stiffness to optimally exploit the properties of the elastic surface. Thus, the increased corticospinal excitability on the elastic surface may reflect a more supraspinal control of the ankle muscles to compensate the decrease in reflexive stiffness at the beginning of touchdown and/or counteract the higher postural challenges associated with the elastic surface
Differences in kicking velocity and kicking deficit in young elite soccer players
El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar la evolución del rendimiento máximo de golpeo de balón a lo largo de la edad en futbolistas jóvenes de élite. Un total de 175 fueron divididos en 11 grupos edad (U-9 hasta U-19), además del equipo filial del club (U-23). Se registró la velocidad máxima de golpeo con la pierna dominante y no dominante mediante radar. El déficit de golpeo fue calculado para comparar el rendimiento entre ambas piernas. La velocidad máxima de golpeo aumenta progresivamente de forma significativa desde U-9 hasta U-16 con la pierna dominante y hasta U-18 con la no dominante, y sigue aumentando de forma no significativa hasta U-23. La etapa con mayor incremento de la velocidad de golpeo fue entre U-13 y U-16. Existe un déficit de golpeo con la pierna no dominante y sus valores permanecen estables (9.43%-18.18%) sin cambios significativos desde U-9 hasta U-23The purpose of this current study was to examine the age-related differences in kicking performance with both legs in 175 youth soccer players. Players from the development programme of a professional club were grouped according to their respective under-age team (U-9 to U-18), in addition to the club’s second team (U-23). Maximal kicking velocity with the preferred and non-preferred leg was recorded using a Doppler radar gun. Kicking deficit was calculated to compare side-to-side performance. Maximal kicking velocity improved progressively from the U-9 to U-16 age groups for the preferred leg and from U-16 to U-18 for the non-preferred leg, and continued to improve moderately but non-statistically significant until U-23. The stage of greatest kicking velocity development was between 13 and 16 years of age. There is a kicking deficit with the non-preferred leg and its values remain steady (9.43%-18.18%) without significant changes in players from U-9 to U-23 categorie
Quasars Clustering at z approx 3 on Scales less sim 10 h^{-1} Mpc
We test the hypothesis whether high redshift QSOs would preferentially appear
in small groups or pairs, and if they are associated with massive, young
clusters. We carried out a photometric search for \Ly emitters on scales
Mpc, in the fields of a sample of 47 known
QSOs. Wide and narrow band filter color-magnitude diagrams were generated for
each of the fields. A total of 13 non resolved objects with a
significant color excess were detected as QSO candidates at a redshift similar
to that of the target. All the candidates are significantly fainter than the
reference QSOs, with only 2 of them within 2 magnitudes of the central object.
Follow-up spectroscopic observations have shown that 5, i.e., about 40% of the
candidates, are QSOs at the same redshift of the target; 4 are QSOs at
different z (two of them probably being a lensed pair at z = 1.47); 2
candidates are unresolved HII galaxies at z0.3; one unclassified and one
candidate turned out to be a CCD flaw. These data indicate that at least 10% of
the QSOs at z3 do have companions.
We have also detected a number of resolved, rather bright \Ly Emitter
Candidates. Most probably a large fraction of them might be bright galaxies
with [OII] emission, at z 0.3. The fainter population of our
candidates corresponds to the current expectations. Thus, there are no strong
indication for the existence of an overdensity of \Ly galaxies brighter than m

Lie bialgebra contractions and quantum deformations of quasi-orthogonal algebras
Lie bialgebra contractions are introduced and classified. A non-degenerate
coboundary bialgebra structure is implemented into all pseudo-orthogonal
algebras starting from the one corresponding to . It allows
to introduce a set of Lie bialgebra contractions which leads to Lie bialgebras
of quasi-orthogonal algebras. This construction is explicitly given for the
cases . All Lie bialgebra contractions studied in this paper define
Hopf algebra contractions for the Drinfel'd-Jimbo deformations .
They are explicitly used to generate new non-semisimple quantum algebras as it

Quasars: from the Physics of Line Formation to Cosmology
Quasars accreting matter at very high rates (known as extreme Population A
[xA] or super-Eddington accreting massive black holes) provide a new class of
distance indicators covering cosmic epochs from the present-day Universe up to
less than 1 Gyr from the Big Bang. The very high accretion rate makes it
possible that massive black holes hosted in xA quasars radiate at a stable,
extreme luminosity-to-mass ratio. This in turns translates into stable physical
and dynamical conditions of the mildly ionized gas in the quasar low-ionization
line emitting region. In this contribution, we analyze the main optical and UV
spectral properties of extreme Population A quasars that make them easily
identifiable in large spectroscopic surveys at low-z (z < 1) and intermediate-z
(2 < z < 2.6), and the physical conditions that are derived for the formation
of their emission lines. Ultimately, the analysis supports the possibility of
identifying a virial broadening estimator from low-ionization line widths, and
the conceptual validity of the redshift-independent luminosity estimates based

Dental findings in patients with liver cirrhosis. A study of 100 cases
A study was made of the dental findings in 100 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) by examining the number of carious, missing and filled teeth. A significantly greater number of carious and missing teeth were observed in the patients with cirrhosis than in a control group of 50 healthy individuals. In the LC group, caries were found to affect more teeth in those patients with alcohol-induced LC than in those with liver disease of other causes. Finally, no relationship was observed between the number of carious, missing or filled teeth and certain determinations including serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxalacetate transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase, platelet number, hepatitis B and C positivity markers, or antinuclear (ANA), antimitochondrial (AMA) or anti-smooth muscle autoantibodies (ASm).Une étude des fiches dentaires de 100 patients présentant une cirrhose hépatique (CH) a été réalisée en examinant l’index des dents cariées, manquantes ou plombées. Une augmentation significative du nombre de dents cariées ou manquantes a été observée chez les patients avec cirrhose, par rapport au groupe de référence composé de 50 individus sains. Dans le groupe de CH, les patients avec cirrhose éthylique avaient un plus grand nombre de caries que les autres pour lesquels l’origine de la maladie hépatique était différente. Finalement aucune relation n’a été observée entre l’index des dents cariées, manquantes ou plombées et certaines déterminations analytiques comme les transaminases alanine aminotransférases (ALAT ou SGPT), les transaminases aspartate aminotransférases ( ASAT ou SGOT), les phosphates alcalines, la numération plaquettaire, les marqueurs des hépatites B ou C, ou les anticorps antinucléaires (ANA), anti-mitochondries (AMA) ou antimuscle lisse (ASm)
