How to play two-players restricted quantum games with 10 cards
We show that it is perfectly possible to play 'restricted' two-players,
two-strategies quantum games proposed originally by Marinatto and Weber having
as the only equipment a pack of 10 cards. The 'quantum board' of such a model
of these quantum games is an extreme simplification of 'macroscopic quantum
machines' proposed by one of the authors in numerous papers that allow to
simulate by macroscopic means various experiments performed on two entangled

Progress report on recommendations from the International review panel report for the 2013 International Fisheries Stock assessment workshop:sardine
The international review panel report (MARAM/IWS/DEC13/General/4 Final Report) contained the following recommendations pertinent to sardine in response to key questions put to them at the annual stock assessment review meeting held at UCT from 2-6 December 2013. Comments on any progress in response to these recommendations are inserted in italics. As a general point of background information, the Small Pelagic Scientific Working Group agreed earlier in 2014 to finalise OMP-14 based on a single sardine stock operating model only, but coupled with some spatial management, the spirit of which is to be a âwarm up periodâ with the expectation that the next OMP will quite likely require spatial management components. The development of new operating models and a new OMP is to be brought forward, commencing in early 2015 with the aim of being finalised before the end of 2016
Cartoon Computation: Quantum-like computing without quantum mechanics
We present a computational framework based on geometric structures. No
quantum mechanics is involved, and yet the algorithms perform tasks analogous
to quantum computation. Tensor products and entangled states are not needed --
they are replaced by sets of basic shapes. To test the formalism we solve in
geometric terms the Deutsch-Jozsa problem, historically the first example that
demonstrated the potential power of quantum computation. Each step of the
algorithm has a clear geometric interpetation and allows for a cartoon

A record of the generation of data used in the sardine and anchovy assessments
The data to which the South African anchovy and sardine assessments are tuned are not raw data. Some of the data have already been subjected to a number of analyses and refinements. These associated calculations are often done âbehind the scenesâ and their details are seldom recorded. This lack of record can result in a discontinuity in the method used to calculate data for subsequent assessments, particularly if assumptions made in the calculations are not documented and/or a new person becomes responsible for developing the data to be used for input to the assessment. This document serves to record the generation from the raw data of the data to be used in the anchovy and sardine assessments to be carried out in 2007

HD 181068: A Red Giant in a Triply-Eclipsing Compact Hierarchical Triple System
Hierarchical triple systems comprise a close binary and a more distant
component. They are important for testing theories of star formation and of
stellar evolution in the presence of nearby companions. We obtained 218 days of
Kepler photometry of HD 181068 (magnitude of 7.1), supplemented by groundbased
spectroscopy and interferometry, which show it to be a hierarchical triple with
two types of mutual eclipses. The primary is a red giant that is in a 45-day
orbit with a pair of red dwarfs in a close 0.9-day orbit. The red giant shows
evidence for tidally-induced oscillations that are driven by the orbital motion
of the close pair. HD 181068 is an ideal target for studies of dynamical
evolution and testing tidal friction theories in hierarchical triple systems.Comment: 22 pages, including supporting on-line material. This is the author's
