    On the dimensions of secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties

    This paper explores the dimensions of higher secant varieties to Segre-Veronese varieties. The main goal of this paper is to introduce two different inductive techniques. These techniques enable one to reduce the computation of the dimension of the secant variety in a high dimensional case to the computation of the dimensions of secant varieties in low dimensional cases. As an application of these inductive approaches, we will prove non-defectivity of secant varieties of certain two-factor Segre-Veronese varieties. We also use these methods to give a complete classification of defective s-th Segre-Veronese varieties for small s.     Time-optimal CNOT between indirectly coupled qubits in a linear Ising chain

    We give analytical solutions for the time-optimal synthesis of entangling gates between indirectly coupled qubits 1 and 3 in a linear spin chain of three qubits subject to an Ising Hamiltonian interaction with equal coupling JJ plus a local magnetic field acting on the intermediate qubit. The energy available is fixed, but we relax the standard assumption of instantaneous unitary operations acting on single qubits. The time required for performing an entangling gate which is equivalent, modulo local unitary operations, to the CNOT(1,3)\mathrm{CNOT}(1, 3) between the indirectly coupled qubits 1 and 3 is T=3/2J−1T=\sqrt{3/2} J^{-1}, i.e. faster than a previous estimate based on a similar Hamiltonian and the assumption of local unitaries with zero time cost. Furthermore, performing a simple Walsh-Hadamard rotation in the Hlibert space of qubit 3 shows that the time-optimal synthesis of the CNOT±(1,3)\mathrm{CNOT}^{\pm}(1, 3) (which acts as the identity when the control qubit 1 is in the state ∣0⟩\ket{0}, while if the control qubit is in the state ∣1⟩\ket{1} the target qubit 3 is flipped as âˆŁÂ±âŸ©â†’âˆŁâˆ“âŸ©\ket{\pm}\rightarrow \ket{\mp}) also requires the same time TT.Comment: 9 pages; minor modification

    DmCatD, a cathepsin D-like peptidase of the hematophagous insect Dipetalogaster maxima, is synthesized by the fat body and the ovary and functions as yolk protein precursor. Functionally, DmCatD is involved in vitellin proteolysis. In this work, we purified and sequenced DmCatD, performed bioinformatic analyses and investigated the events involved in its targeting and storage in developing oocytes. By ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography, DmCatD was purified from egg homogenates and its identity was confirmed by mass spectrometry. Approximately 73% of the full-length transcript was sequenced. The phylogeny indicated that DmCatD has features which suggest its distancing from “classical” cathepsins D. Bioinformatic analyses using a chimeric construct were employed to predict post-translational modifications. Structural modeling showed that DmCatD exhibited the expected folding for this type of enzyme, and an active site with conserved architecture. The interaction between DmCatD and lipophorin in the hemolymph was demonstrated by co-immunoprecipitation. Colocalization of both proteins in developing oocyte membranes and yolk bodies was detected by immunofluorescence. Docking assays favoring the interaction DmCatD-lipophorin were carried out after modeling lipophorin of a related triatomine species. Our results suggest that lipophorin acts as a carrier for DmCatD to facilitate its further internalization by the oocytes. The mechanisms involved in the uptake of peptidases within the oocytes of insects have not been reported. This is the first experimental work supporting the interaction between cathepsin D and lipophorin in an insect species, enabling us to propose a pathway for its targeting and storage in developing oocytes.Fil: Leyria, Jimena.     Energy Characterization and Gasification of Biomass Derived by Hazelnut Cultivation: Analysis of Produced Syngas by Gas Chromatography

    Modern agriculture is an extremely energy intensive process. However, high agricultural productivities and the growth of green revolution has been possible only by large amount of energy inputs, especially those coming from fossil fuels. These energy resources have not been able to provide an economically viable solution for agricultural applications. Biomass energy-based systems had been extensively used for transportation and on farm systems during World War II: the most common and reliable solution was wood or biomass gasification. The latter means incomplete combustion of biomass resulting in production of combustible gases which mostly consist of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2) and traces of methane (CH4). This mixture is called syngas, which can be successfully used to run internal combustion engines (both compression and spark ignition) or as substitute for furnace oil in direct heat applications. The aim of the present paper is to help the experimentation of innovative plants for electric power production using agro-forest biomass derived by hazelnut cultivations. An additional purpose is to point out a connection among the chemical and physical properties of the outgoing syngas by biomass characterization and gas-chromatography analysis

    Adaptive evolution is substantially impeded by Hill–Robertson interference in Drosophila

    Hill–Robertson interference (HRi) is expected to reduce the efficiency of natural selection when two or more linked selected sites do not segregate freely, but no attempt has been done so far to quantify the overall impact of HRi on the rate of adaptive evolution for any given genome. In this work, we estimate how much HRi impedes the rate of adaptive evolution in the coding genome of Drosophila melanogaster. We compiled a data set of 6,141 autosomal protein-coding genes from Drosophila, from which polymorphism levels in D. melanogaster and divergence out to D. yakuba were estimated. The rate of adaptive evolution was calculated using a derivative of the McDonald–Kreitman test that controls for slightly deleterious mutations. We find that the rate of adaptive amino acid substitution at a given position of the genome is positively correlated to both the rate of recombination and the mutation rate, and negatively correlated to the gene density of the region. These correlations are robust to controlling for each other, for synonymous codon bias and for gene functions related to immune response and testes. We show that HRi diminishes the rate of adaptive evolution by approximately 27%. Interestingly, genes with low mutation rates embedded in gene poor regions lose approximately 17% of their adaptive substitutions whereas genes with high mutation rates embedded in gene rich regions lose approximately 60%. We conclude that HRi hampers the rate of adaptive evolution in Drosophila and that the variation in recombination, mutation, and gene density along the genome affects the HRi effect

    In the limit of low viscosity, we show that the amplitude of the modes of oscillation of a rotating fluid, namely inertial modes, concentrate along an attractor formed by a periodic orbit of characteristics of the underlying hyperbolic Poincar\'e equation. The dynamics of characteristics is used to elaborate a scenario for the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenmodes and eigenspectrum in the physically relevant r\'egime of very low viscosities which are out of reach numerically.
