A robust strategy is reported to build perfectly monodisperse star polycationscombining a trehalose-based cyclooligosaccharide (cyclotrehalan, CT) centralcore onto which oligoethyleneimine radial arms are installed. Thearchitectural perfection of the compounds is demonstrated by a variety ofphysicochemical techniques, including NMR, MS, DLS, TEM, and GPC. Key tothe strategy is the possibility of customizing the cavity size of the macrocyclicplatform to enable/prevent the inclusion of adamantane motifs. Theseproperties can be taken into advantage to implement sequential levels ofstimuli responsiveness by combining computational design, precisionchemistry and programmed host-guest interactions. Specifically, it is shownthat supramolecular dimers implying a trimeric CT-tetraethyleneimine starpolycation and purposely designed bis-adamantane guests are preorganizedto efficiently complex plasmid DNA (pDNA) into transfection-competentnanocomplexes. The stability of the dimer species is responsive to theprotonation state of the cationic clusters, resulting in dissociation at acidicpH. This process facilitates endosomal escape, but reassembling can takeplace in the cytosol then handicapping pDNA nuclear import. By equippingthe ditopic guest with a redox-sensitive disulfide group, recapturingphenomena are prevented, resulting in drastically improved transfectionefficiencies both in vivo and in vitro.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Agencia Estatal de Investigación, de España-MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional de la Unión Europea-RTI2018-097609-B-C21, RTI2018-097609-B-C22, PID2019-105858RB-I00 y PID2020-118384GB-I00Junta de Andalucía-P20_0016

INTRODUCTION: Strength is the neuromuscular capacity to overcome or counter resistances through muscular activity and is closely linked to all the motor actions that the human being develops, and to his body mass index. OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the isometric strength of the dominant hand of university students. METHOD: The strength was evaluated with a TAKEI SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT 5401 dynamometer to 70 university students using a random sampling method using a descriptive transactional design. We obtained data that were processed with a bivariate correlation obtaining the Pearson coefficient. We used SPSS ver. 15. RESULTS: The studied age was 23 ± 1.9 years, with a length of 165.6 cm. ± 7.72 for women and 173.7 cm. ± 7.95 men, as well as a weight in women of 64.1 ± 14.82 kg and men 82.3 ± 14.72 kg, which results in a BMI for women of 25.01 ± 4.405 m2/kg and 25.06 with ± 4.398 m2/kg for men. On the other hand, the female isometry strength was 3.08. ± 0.613 Kg and for men was 3.68 ± 0.839 Kg. In females, there was not correlation between the BMI and isometric strength (Sig = .192). Contrary, in males, there was a significant and negative correlation grade between the BMI and isometric strength (r = -0,452; Sig. = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, it was observed that as BMI increases, strength does not grow. Therefore, other variables should be evaluated to understand what is related to the overweight or obesity of students

In Spain, neither the HIV nor the STI national surveillance systems collect information on HIV/STI co-infection. However, there are two networks based on HIV/STI clinics which gather this data. We describe HIV prevalence in men who have sex with men (MSM) diagnosed with infectious syphilis and/or gonorrhoea in 15 STI clinics; and concurrent diagnoses of STI in MSM newly diagnosed with HIV in 19 HIV/STI clinics. In total, 572 MSM were diagnosed with infectious syphilis and 580 with gonorrhoea during 2005-2007. HIV prevalence among syphilis and gonorrhoea cases was 29.8% and 15.2% respectively. In the multivariate analysis, HIV/syphilis co-infection was associated with being Latin American; having a history of STI; reporting exclusively anal intercourse; and having sex with casual or several types of partners. HIV and gonorrhoea co-infection was associated with age older than 45 years; having no education or only primary education completed; and having a history of STI. In total, 1,462 HIV infections were newly diagnosed among MSM during 2003-2007. Of these, 31.0% were diagnosed with other STI at the same time. Factors associated with STI co-infection among new HIV cases in MSM were being Latin American; and having sex with casual partners or with both steady and casual partners. In Spain, a considerable proportion of MSM are co-infected with HIV and STI.This work was funded by two grants (36646/07; 36794/08) from the Foundation for Research and Prevention of AIDS in Spain (Fundación para la Investigación y la Prevención del SIDA en España–FIPSE).S

[Abstract] The use of numerical parameters in Complex Network analysis is expanding to new fields of application. At a molecular level, we can use them to describe the molecular structure of chemical entities, protein interactions, or metabolic networks. However, the applications are not restricted to the world of molecules and can be extended to the study of macroscopic nonliving systems, organisms, or even legal or social networks. On the other hand, the development of the field of Artificial Intelligence has led to the formulation of computational algorithms whose design is based on the structure and functioning of networks of biological neurons. These algorithms, called Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), can be useful for the study of complex networks, since the numerical parameters that encode information of the network (for example centralities/node descriptors) can be used as inputs for the ANNs. The Wiener index (W) is a graph invariant widely used in chemoinformatics to quantify the molecular structure of drugs and to study complex networks. In this work, we explore for the first time the possibility of using Markov chains to calculate analogues of node distance numbers/W to describe complex networks from the point of view of their nodes. These parameters are called Markov-Wiener node descriptors of order kth (Wk). Please, note that these descriptors are not related to Markov-Wiener stochastic processes. Here, we calculated the Wk(i) values for a very high number of nodes (>100,000) in more than 100 different complex networks using the software MI-NODES. These networks were grouped according to the field of application. Molecular networks include the Metabolic Reaction Networks (MRNs) of 40 different organisms. In addition, we analyzed other biological and legal and social networks. These include the Interaction Web Database Biological Networks (IWDBNs), with 75 food webs or ecological systems and the Spanish Financial Law Network (SFLN). The calculated Wk(i) values were used as inputs for different ANNs in order to discriminate correct node connectivity patterns from incorrect random patterns. The MIANN models obtained present good values of Sensitivity/Specificity (%): MRNs (78/78), IWDBNs (90/88), and SFLN (86/84). These preliminary results are very promising from the point of view of a first exploratory study and suggest that the use of these models could be extended to the high-throughput re-evaluation of connectivity in known complex networks (collation)

Background and purpose: The cherry-red spot of the macula is a quite specific sign of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), which is an uncommon illness with poor visual prognosis, spite of the therapeutic options that include conservative treatment and minimally invasive techniques that we have evaluated to establish a therapeutic algorithm. Methods: We have performed a meta-analysis of all the existing literature on CRAO treatments. Results: All the studies found were retrospective, non-randomised and non-controlled, with the exception of a multicenter study that should enable us to establish a therapeutic protocol in CRAO. Conclusion: In the treatment of CRAO invasive techniques obtain better results than conservative treatments, but there is not enough evidence to justify this fact.

Hyphoderma paramacaronesicum sp. nov. (Meruliaceae, Polyporales, Basidiomycota), a cryptic lineage to H. macaronesicum

    No full text
This article re-evaluates the taxonomy of Hyphoderma macaronesicum based on various strategies, including the cohesion species recognition method through haplotype networks, multilocus genetic analyses using the genealogical concordance phylogenetic concept, as well as species tree reconstruction. The following loci were examined: the internal transcribed spacers of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS nrDNA), the intergenic spacers of nuclear ribosomal DNA (IGS nrDNA), two fragments of the protein-coding RNA polymerase II subunit 2 (RPB2), and two fragments of the translation elongation factor 1-α (EF1-α). Our results indicate that the name H. macaronesicum includes at least two separate species, one of which is newly described as Hyphoderma paramacaronesicum. The two species are readily distinguished based on the various loci analysed, namely ITS, IGS, RPB2 and EF1-α.Financial support was provided by Plan Nacional I+D+i projects CGL2009–07231, CGL2012–35559 and CGL- 2015-67459-P.Peer reviewe
