Datierung weichselzeitlicher Haupteisrandlagen in Nordost-Deutschland mit Hilfe von Optisch Stimulierter Lumineszenz (OSL)
During the past 130 years, classification of the Weichselian Pleniglacial in
north-eastern Germany was mainly based on morphostratigraphical
interpretations. In general, three main ice marginal positions are
distinguished. The ice advance to the southernmost, relatively weakly
developed ice marginal position of the Brandenburg phase has traditionally
been ascribed to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet
(SIS). The Frankfurt phase is usually interpreted as a halt during the
downmelting of the glacier. The most prominent ice marginal position in north-
eastern Germany is that of the Pomeranian phase. Owing to the absence of
recent geochronological data of the Weichselian ice advances, the commonly
used ages of ice marginal positions are only estimates or are based on
extrapolations from 14C ages of underlying organic sediments. However, during
the past few years a number of studies have been conducted to set up a
chronology based on geochronometrical data. In this study fluvioglacial
sediments from outwash plains associated with the Brandenburg phase and the
Pomeranian phase were dated by means of Optically Stimulated Luminescence
(OSL) of single aliquots and single grains of quartz. Recently, additional
ages from Surface Exposure Dating (SED) of erratic boulders using cosmogenic
10Be have been published. To compare the results from these different
approaches, the type and position of the sampled material within the glacial
landscape system have to be considered. Consequently, different
geomorphological processes are datable using either OSL or SED techniques.
Therefore a process-based interpretation for numerical ages from OSL and SED
in glacigenic landscapes is introduced. From the results of the OSL analyses
from the Brandenburg and Pomeranian phases as well as a thorough reassessment
of the available 10Be exposure ages, a synthesis was achieved in terms of ice
dynamics and ice retreat patterns during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2. One of
the main findings is the evidence for a twofold LGM, with the older phase
(LGM-1) corresponding to the Brandenburg phase, which was dated to <34 ka
(maximum age), and the younger phase (LGM-2) represented by the Pomeranian
phase, which was dated to 20.1 ±1.6 ka (initial formation of outwash plains)
and 19.4 ±2.4 ka (final sedimentation of sandur sediments). The first
Weichselian deglaciation pattern for north-eastern Germany was established,
based on results from numerical dating methods, and the last glacial-
interglacial cycle was dated for the first time from a terrestrial Saalian-
Eemian-Weichselian sedimentary sequence in the research area.
Ice Sheet, SIS) zugeschrieben.
numerischer Alter in glazialen Landschaftssystemen entwickelt.
weichselzeitliche Sedimente umfasst, datiert
Chronology of Weichselian main ice marginal positions in north-eastern Germany
Palaeoenvironmental research at HaweltiâMelazo (Tigray, northern Ethiopia) â insights from sedimentological and geomorphological analyses
The sites of HaweltiâMelazo in the Tigray region of the northern Ethiopian Highlands is an archaeological hotspot related to the D'mt kingdom
(ca. 800â400âBCE). The existence of several monumental buildings, which
have been excavated since the 1950s, underline the importance of this area in the Ethio-Sabaean period. We investigated the geomorphological and
geological characteristics of the site and its surroundings and carried out
sedimentological analyses, as well as direct (luminescence) and indirect
(radiocarbon) sediment dating, to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental
conditions, which we integrated into the wider context of Tigray.
Luminescence dating of feldspar grains from the May Agazin catchment
indicate enhanced fluvial activity in the late Pleistocene, likely connected to the re-occurring monsoon after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The abundance of trap basalt on the Melazo plateau, which provides the basis for the development of fertile soils, and the presumably higher groundwater level during the Ethio-Sabaean Period, provided favourable settlement conditions. The peninsula-like shape of the Melazo plateau was easily accessible only from the east and northeast, while relatively steep scarps enclose the other edges of the plateau. This adds a possible natural protective function to this site
Late Quaternary formation of the Miaoli Tableland in northwest Taiwan, an interplay of tectonic uplift and fluvial processes dated by OSL
The âtablelandsâ in Taiwan are sedimentary terraces occurring in the foreland basin west of the Neogene mountain ranges. The Miaoli Tableland consists of elevated Late Quaternary sedimentary successions, representing a change from tidal to coastal and fluvial to eolian depositional environments. The present-day morphology is a result of combined processes, including differential tectonic uplift, ongoing fluvial aggradation, and incision. Selected deposits in 10 outcrops were sampled and studied by optical dating. The deposition of fluvial sediments started after the last interglacial (<100 ka) in the southeast of the tablelands. Uplift and sea-level lowering caused a base-level fall, resulting in a stepwise redeposition of the fluvial sediments. Additionally, enhanced remobilization of fluvial sediments occurred during the cold/dry climate during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stages (MIS) 4 and 2. The depositional ages of the coastal sediments enabled the estimation of long-term uplift rates of ca. 0.5 to 3.5 mm/yr. The eolian cover sediments yielded MIS 3 (east) to Holocene ages (west). Our results provide new insight into the interplay of climate, sea-level changes, remobilization of sediments, and tectonism leading to tableland formation during the Late Quaternary
A composite 10Be, IR-50 and 14C chronology of the pre-LGM full ice extent of the western Patagonian Ice Sheet in the Isla de ChiloĂ©, south Chile (42ÂșS
Unanswered questions about the glacier and climate history preceding the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the southern temperate latitudes remain. The Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 is normally understood as a global interstadial period; nonetheless its climate was punctuated by conspicuous variability, and its signature has not been resolved beyond the polar realms. In this paper, we compile a 10Be depth profile, single grain infrared (IR) stimulated luminescence dating and 14C samples to derive a new glacier record for the principal outwash plain complex, deposited by the western Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) during the last glacial period (Llanquihue Glaciation) on the Isla de ChiloĂ©, southern Chile (42ââS). In this region, the Golfo de Corcovado Ice Lobe left a distinct geomorphic and stratigraphic imprint, suitable for reconstructing former ice dynamics and timing of past climate change. Our data indicate that maximum glaciation occurred by 57.8±4.7âka without reaching the Pacific Ocean coast. Ice readavanced and buttressed against the eastern side of the Cordillera de la Costa again by 26.0±2.9âka. Our data further support the notion of a large ice extent during parts of the MIS 3 in Patagonia and New Zealand but appear to contradict near contemporaneous interstadial evidence in the southern midlatitudes, including ChiloĂ©. We propose that the PIS expanded to its full-glacial Llanquihue moraines, recording a rapid response of southern mountain glaciers to the millennial-scale climate stadials that punctuated the MIS 3 at the poles and elsewhere.</p
Living at the wadi â integrating geomorphology and archaeology at the oasis of Qurayyah (NW Arabia)
The archaeological site Qurayyah, situated in the NW of the Tabuk Province of Saudi Arabia, has been repeatedly described as one of the largest and most significant oases of Northwestern Arabia. Human occupation in the oasis started at least from the early Holocene and continued to the Nabatean, Roman and late Byzantine period. The hydrologically favored position results from its specific geomorphological location where the plateaus fade towards the east and the landscape opens towards the Tabuk Basin so that a balanced water supply was ensured. We present a geomorphological map (1:20,000; main map) based on the interpretation of a high-resolution satellite image and detailed control in the field. The map integrates archaeological, hydraulic and natural features in order to show how the people at Qurayyah structured their landscape and developed water management strategies in relation to prevailing geomorphological processes during the incipient phase (Bronze Age) of the oasis
From the northern ice shield to the Alpine glaciations
The route of the field trip described in this excursion guide follows a section through Germany from North to South, from the area of the Northern glaciation, to the Alpine glacial advances. It includes several places of historical importance, where milestones in Quaternary research have been achieved in the past, as well as new interesting sites where results of recent research is presented.excursionguid
